I upgraded to factory GT3 aero kit, GT3 wheels, painted the center console and horseshoe dash surround both guards red, as well as the turnpike transponder (it looks pretty sweet now), installed ROW M030 sport suspension at 88,000 miles, replaced the clutch, replaced the brake rotors and pads all around, replaced the water pump, and that's about it on the maintenance side.

Almost $2000 spent since then doing full brake, IMS, rear main seal, coils and plugs, updating stereo, fister muffler mod with a butterfly valve, oh and replacing the convertible top.

Of course you have to mentally factor in who bought their car new, who bought a roller and fixed it up, etc.
Here's something I've been curious about for a long time. How much are people really paying for 996's? I've seen prices all over the map, but I think it would be interesting to see what deals are really being made. The pertinent items I think would be: Year, Model, color(s), Mileage at purchase, Stick or tip, options or upgrades, when purchased and whether it was a "fixer-upper" or not.
I'll start it off: 2002, C2 coupe, Arctic/Black, stick. 39k miles. Options are 18" Carrera wheels, CD Player (frunk) and "Porsche" embriodered in the floor mats. Not a fixer. I paid 25000 (plus tax,tag and dealer fee) on 1-28-14. BTW, now at 59k miles and still everything original, no upgrades or changed parts.
That's kind of like asking someone how their wife is in the sack...sure, it's interesting to know, but some people aren't really comfortable with the question.
I paid $30K about 3 years ago. And fantastic.
2003 for a 2002 C4S with 6k km. 124k Cdn
2012 for a 2001 Turbo with 86k km 41k Cdn
I have them both today but wish I would have gotten the Turbo back in 2003 but it was priced at 150-170k Cdn back then and I cheaped out, didn't have a clue that the engines were different between the two and that the m96 was a piece of ****.

I got my black 1999, manual 996 for $7,500. It had 94k miles, never wrecked, orig. paint in mostly great condition. Oh....it also had an IMS failure, which we rebuilt to race spec for 10K. So for under 18K I got a
bitchen
hot rod with 0 miles on the motor. Seats were a bit worn, so I replaced them with a pair of 997 seats in great condition for $500. Since then, we've replaced a number of other bits - suspension, wheels/tires and some of the body work (aero) and exhaust - and made a very cool street / track day car. I even tracked down the previous owner - a big shot professor up at Berkley, who said she definitely would have kept it if she could have rebuilt the motor for what we did.
I've got a newer (2014) Cayman S, that's pretty, smooth and fast, and girls love it.
But guys really like the kind-of-mean looking 911 - I get thumbs up and compliments most every time I take it out.....in a town with Porsches on just about every block. So enjoy, emtee49!!
I bought my 2004 C2 in January 2014 for $30,000. Car was at Park Place Porsche here in Dallas. 42,000 miles and new rear tires (which I quickly wore out).
Some age related issues are starting to show, like noisy struts/shocks, and a few rattles. Other than that, it's been a solid car, and I couldn't be happier.
That's awesome
My wife paid $22 for a 99 c4 cab stick with 37k mikes and every option except litronics 2 years ago. Add another 22k in repairs/maint since then.
2000 996 C4
Black Exterior/Savannah interior/6speed
It was obvious it was ignored and not treated like you should treat a Porsche
Paid: $15K in 2010
It had 107K miles on the odo
As of today, I have invested about $8K.
Car now has 151K miles
$20.4k in 1/2015 for my '99 Aero Kit, 6-speed, LSD, full leather, Arena Red, 3-spoke wheel, Turbo Twists, colored crests, TechArt exhaust, Alum gauges/shifter/e-brake. 64,000 miles. 2 owners. SoCal car. No service history. I'm probably all-in at around $27k or so after IMS, maintenance, and upkeep.
I took mine in on a trade, thought I might sell it but after driving it I loved it. Its a 2000 and had 18000 original miles on it. New tires were on it. Full leather and a TIP. I knew the guy that bought it new here in Vegas, 88000 was sticker. I shipped it to Jake and had RMS, AOS, IMSB, WATER PUMP, LO TEMP THERMOSTAT, CHAIN TENSIONERS, PLUGS, SPIN ON FILTER AND MAG DRAIN PLUG, maybe I forgot something. With all that and round trip shipping to Jake I got 28000 in mine. I'm planning on keeping it for years.
'03 C4S this year, around $37k. TechnoSport wheels, <50k, preferred colors (important to me; perhaps not to others), carbon package, known history. Probably high, but I didn't want to d**k around for months to save another $1500.
Oh, and remarkable.
$33.5K for a 2004 C2 with PSE, PSM, M030 suspension, 18" wheels, a bunch of other options, with 24K miles in Feb 2013. My first 911 (not my first Porsche). Lots of $$$ spent on maintenance and repairs since, but I love that car!
2002 996 turbo: 28,000 miles, 2 owner car, recent 30k maintenance (plugs&coils)
Car was originally set at 45k but I had cash and determination. Picked it for --------->
$40,000 and all the free smiles you could ever ask for. Then quickly deposited 5k back into my account so the wife thought I got a hell of a deal.
Feb 2015.
It's not like people don't see the cars for sale that we all eventually buy anyway. (For those that are above the question)
I bought my '01 C4 cab (Tiptronic) in 2013 for $24K. Original sticker was around $97K.
It had 51K miles and was in very good condition except for the canvas top.
I traded it in at a Porsche dealer earlier this year for $22K. It had 58K miles at that time.
2002 C4S, 6 spd. Paid 28k last December. 48k miles. Car had clutch, IMS and RMS done. New tires and wheels. All service records since new.
Car now has PSS10, hew headers, IPD plenum, EVOMS intake, FVD tune, 997 SSK, LN spin-on filter and magnetic drain plug. Plus a LOT of preventive maintenance done a month ago. Have spent maybe 7-8k on her in the last 6 months.
Picked mine up for $21.5K. 2002 C2 Cab, manual, fully loaded ($97K MSRP) with 78K miles in June 2014. Spent another $4.5K on PM including IMS upgrade. Happy camper! Only $100 in repair on an oil pressure sensor. I will admit that the IMS is on my mind from time to time but I have developed a "f*#% it" attitude towards it. Kids love it. Wife loves it. No complaints.
1999 c2 cab. 14k miles, 6 speed, Garage queen dealer serviced since new, 18 in wheels very nicely optioned 24k. This month. Considering IMS and RMS. Thoughts on IMS? I have read that it's 1% chance on the 1999s
Bought my '99 cab for $24.5K in April 2010. It is heavily optioned and had 50K miles, and originally sold with a MSRP of $90K. Condition = 2+. Normal mntce costs but original IMS/RMS/AOS/clutch now at 79K miles. Money and time well spent, I say.
relinuca
1999 with aero kit, extended leather, litronics, aluminum gauges, K&N, fister exhaust, and a bunch of other stuff. 31K miles. November 2014, $22K.
Pimped the interior to make it complete leather and CF, done some maintenance on it and I regularly drive it like I stole it! Don't think I will be doing the IMS anytime soon.
2004 C2 cab tiptronic. Optioned with full leather, pse, 18 wheels, and aero rockers. Purchased in November with 14k miles on it for $34k. They were originally asking $42k so I was happy with the deal.
In 2006 I paid $26,500 for a 1999 C2 with 55k miles, black, manual, excellent condition. In 2008 (after the stock market crashed) I sold it for $20,400 (ouch) and it took a long long time. No one on this board was interested. At the same time I had 4 19" RG5 Champion wheels w/tires which I sold for $1,500! Again, couldn't give them away on this board.
More recently (this year) I purchased a 2002 C2 Tiptronic with 117,000 miles for $16,000 which needed $3,000 in immediate attention and parts ($400 programmed key!), plus another $1,500 since then. So all in for just under $20k. As it sits all maintenance is done. Did a lot of maintenance myself, which if done by the dealer would have added some real $$$$ to the overall cost.
2001 C2 with 50K. Had recent clutch RMS and IMS. Worked my rear off to get them from $26K to $18.8K. Kept showing them a car in Washington that a guy on this site was selling for $17K that I was going to buy if they didn't want to meet my price and it worked. Car has been a dream. Currently in the process of buying 60K service items and tires in preparation for the desert heat to die down and the fall track season to start.
The only problem is that I am now spoiled and cannot imagine owning anything other than a pcar.
Along the same lines,
Sold 4 of my watches to pay for mine or equivalent to two Rolexes, unless if it's the Johhny Irish type then probably at least 10 of them.
I started coming on here to learn like most but then figured out there aren't as many technical peeps on here as other forums so I just have fun like Soaringman and occasionally rehash info for the peeps with inability to search.
5 years of relatively trouble free ownership with the exception of ignition coils. Everything else was voluntary. 125k, original motor, original IMS, mobil1, slight RMS leak but I still sleep good at night.
Purchased my 2000 996 Cab with 40k original for $17k in December. Had RMS/IMS leak so just finished replacing RMS/IMS, Oil Cooler(leak) , Water Pump(leak), Thermostat, Clutch/PP. Now have 42k miles and and just over $20k in car-intend to enjoy for years.
2001 C4, I bought a fresh rebuilt $15,000 motor and the owner threw in the rest of the car for 5K.
Been a wonderful car, everything works looks nice, and drives like a dream.
Upgrades so far, M030 ROW suspension, F/R strut tower braces, Couple new rad hoses. and an oil change.
17.7k a few weeks ago, with 71k miles on it. About 1k in planned spending has gone into her so far.
Wookie, did you have that car listed for sale recently? I talked to a guy in Kansas about a guards red '99 996 when I was looking.
2002 C4S Coupe Purchased June 2014 -
$25k. 62,000 miles
About $6K invested.
$3.5k for Fabspeed completion air intake and x-cross over cats
$1K new front control arms and misc. suspension refresh
$1.5K on misc. maintenance, brake flush, etc
Just started the IMS 401k retirement planning fund monthly contributions - screwing around HA I just had too sorry
Previously had 2004 C4S
Purchased in 2011. 22,000 miles
$35,000. Didn't spend 1 cent on any repair she was PERFECT!
So regret giving her up but really wanted a coupe and dealer gave me $32k for her on a trade in 3 years later with 80,000 miles on it. Ridiculous in my opinion couldn't pass it up
Purchased my 2004 C2 Cab just a few months ago. Loaded with good options - original MSRP a whopping $101,000. 6-speed, w/hardtop, 67K miles, $29K.
Got the color combo I wanted and lots of great options and none that I didn't want. Very few miles on it so far - just correcting little things so no real expenses to report.
Alrighty then. I paid 21K for my 2003 c2 with approx 100K on the odo. Then dropped about 6K to do a bunch of stuff like IMSB, RMS, AOS, plugs, brakes, rotors, water pump, etc., as PM. Then dropped about 6 or 7K (forgot the exact amount) on a Fabspeed Performance Package. Then about 1K for fuel pump and some other stuff I can't remember. Then, tracked it, so about 3K in tires. Then, blew the motor, so about 10K to replace it. About 2K to add a double-DIN infotainment system with CD/DVD/Phone/NAV. About 1K to repaint the bumpers from minor stone chips. About $500 in microfibers, a random orbital buffer, and cleaners, waxes (I detail the car a few times a week). Over 1.5K in track fees. $1.50 for a visor sunglass holder. Yes, this has been a great investment!
I regret none of it. Enjoy the car immensely every day.
That's it? My track fee/Miata purchase price ledger is starting to tip left.
My 99 showed up in my garage because my wife inexplicably loves me. My 02 arrived because she really really loves me.
'99 C2 Cabriolet - $9500 almost a year ago. Almost $2000 spent since then doing full brake, IMS, rear main seal, coils and plugs, updating stereo, fister muffler mod with a butterfly valve, oh and replacing the convertible top. All work thus far has been completed by myself.
Just picked up a sweet set of OZ Superleggra III wheels from another member I am refinishing also, cant wait for those to go on.
No regrets buying a 996, I love this car, daily driver and I still look for excuses to drive it!
'99 C2 Convertible, 6 spd w/ 48K -- Paid $22K Aug 14. Currently in Stuttgart and was ok with paying a little more than in the States for a US spec. Only spent $600 since purchase with fluid changes, motor mounts, and PPI.
Options include: 032 058 130 197 218 219 236 270 273 274 335 338 413 424 429 434 437 438 439 441 446 454 465 480 484 490 535 537 550 553 562 563 566 567 573 581 590 602 651 657 660 661 685 696 912 937 946 P15 X70 X97 X98 XSC Y06

'99 C2 purchased in April w/70k miles, IMS bearing, clutch, rms, aos done at 69k miles. Is 6 speed, leather package, one of 2 previous owners installed 993 turbo 18" hollow spoke wheels and turbo calipers. Awesome car for $22,600.
2002 Targa, silver, 130000km, tip, purchased 1.5 months ago, paid 20000€
Was just serviced with new tires. Had AOS, IMSB and RMS
Litronics, sport seats, kenwwod 2din with SAT-NAV Bluetooth DVD USB, 18" wheels
I feel it was a good deal
Now just need a 4-stick indicator stalk which was broken when I bought and thought it was something cheap!! Grrrr it's not!
$19k for a 2002 Targa w/ 77k miles a couple years ago. Immediately had to fix a bunch of small stuff for a few grand but has been running beautifully since!
Bought mine in May of last year. Was looking at 997.1, 996 aeros and Cayman S's all manual and had to be rwd. Decided on a guards red factory areo car with partial records. IMS "replaced" by dealer per the carfax, sometime around 13k miles. I got her with 68k, not I'm about 80k on her. Slight RMS leak and a tick I cannot seem to find, nor the dealership, or the indy I go to...so not sure if I should be worried. It could be plugs, idler pulleys, other pulley, etc. Just hope it isn't a lifter, but doesn't sound bad above 2k rpm. If the engine explodes, oh well, I'll rebuild and go nuts (3.8L, 4.0L, turbo ? who knows)
I paid 18,500 and it needed a set of rears (badly), all in (after two sets of rear tires, Yes two sets in 1 year...), oil changes, cat bypass pipes, GT3 carbon fiber center console and some other stuff, probably about 26k in. I absolutely lover the car, I put her on a diet, added some go fast bits and ALL the suspension components are aftermarket, she handles great and has a nice power to weight ratio (probably 2,750-2,800 lbs, plus 200lbs for me as a driver). I don't think I'll sell, but she can handle more power, I'd be happy with 500 whp at 2,850 lbs (if the new engine weighs more).
Paid $90k even for my '04 40th Anniversary new from Parktown Porsche in STL and thought I received a heck of a deal since it had a $98k+ MSRP. Still have it, now with 43,000 miles and I drove it 400 miles yesterday on an in-state business trip I still enjoy it and did the IMS Solution last summer to sleep easier. That being said, depreciation is a bitch. But there is nothing I like more for what it's worth at this point, and I am getting too close to retirement to drop that kind of coin again. And yes, I still have the luggage. It's my 4th 911 but the only one I bought new. And due to economics, likely my last one.
Should have kept the '94 Turbo 3.6 I sold for $55k back in the day!
Well put. Depreciation, of course applies only to what you plan to sell. Our house may be worth more than when we bought it in a local slump in 2010 (having sold our prior home elsewhere in the slump there, so: wash). Since we plan to be carried out of here old and cold, however: Doesn't matter if the place is worth $1.00.
And so too, your 40th anniversary 911. Let your grandkids determine its worth, and fight over it. Meanwhile, enjoy (which you clearly do). And try to think as little as possible about the Turbo. As little as I think about my $500 1964 Lincoln Continental, '89 Honda CRX Si, '84 928 with the only color combo of its kind ever made, '93 964, '96 C4S...all of which I let go.
But I'm not bitter. No sir...not a bit. I don't think about that series of blisteringly stupid sale decisions, ever.
Not even once.
We never planned to sell hers when we bought it so the depreciation hasn't hurt us directly, but it would be nice to know we hadn't lost around $80k if circumstances demanded we part with it. At shy of 70k on the clock that's a bit over a dollar a mile, but I can't think of a single bad mile in there
Either she'll be buried in it or we'll have it long enough for it to go back up in value again
True, at the prices these guys are picking them up for no wonder ims, scored cylinders are no problem or taboo subjects. If I paid 944 prices for my 996 I'd be feeling the same way.
New to the forum. Got my 1999 Cab, this April, with a hard top, 71k miles, original owner (his dad's car), all records, including the window sticker. $15,400. IMS bearing fixed (the son does all his own work, you can eat off his 4 car garage floor) and the 996 is bone stock. Small things needed to be fixed, like one of the hydraulic cylinders for the top leaks, the 'a' in CarrerA' was picked off so I got a new badge, new mats, sticky tires...
I've been lurking around for a while now. I am very impressed with this forum. I want to track the 996, but I've heard horror stories of stuff breaking at the track.
Paid $27,000 in 2014 for my 2004 996. Car is stock with turbo twist II wheels, litronic headlights and new Michelin PSS tires. 54,000 miles on the clock.
26 months ago I paid $27,500 for my 2002 Targa w/62,000 mile. MSRP was $91k. Now has 78,000 miles total costs $150.00 (brake switch) not including DIY oil changes.
$21K in February of this year for my 2002 C2 with ~78K miles. Immediately put another $6K in for new clutch, IMSB, RMS, Window Regulator, Coolant expansion tank, fluid flushes, etc. (some deferred maintenance stuff).
$550 for new engine mounts, coils, plugs (did all labor myself).
$700 for Double-Din replacement stereo, $120 for replacement windshield cowl cover. (again, I did labor)
$375 for pair of take-off catalytic converters to replace my failing ones that passed PPI and weren't throwing codes until I got the car. (my labor)
<$100 did my own oil change 2K miles ago.
Many hours of cleaning, buffing, waxing, buffing again, just to go and get it dirty and do it all over.
BTW, I just turned over 85K miles during a California coast road trip this past weekend. ~7K miles since February. It's my daily driver and my weekend fun car. By far the best, most fun car I've had.
I'm starting to lose track of what the purpose of this thread was originally. We have folks paying from MSRP all the way to Honda Civic prices at different stages of the car's life. So now what? I don't mean to be a grump but what's the point here? I paid X dollars last year, you paid X Dollars 14 years ago, and one guy paid X Dollars for a roller. So what does this all mean? Nothing at all. Pointless.
Paid $15.5 in March 2011 for a 2000 C2 with 126,000 miles, w/new factory motor @ 94,000 miles. Set of tires, redid the seats, went to Jake's for PM package, got a M030 from another lister, good improvement. Was a DD for an older gentleman, so kinda nicked-up, all in right about $20k.
It's been neglected of late as we reno a newly purchased house and fix the current to sell, but, new house has 3 car garage, so list of coils / plugs / mounts /whatever is growing and will be addressed. Couldn't be happier with my Porsche.
I disagree that it's pointless. Of course you have to mentally factor in who bought their car new, who bought a roller and fixed it up, etc. But, that's all great info. Shows the entire spectrum. Now, we just need someone with good 3-D graphing skills to make a mesh plot of:
1) Price paid
2) mileage on the car at the time of purchase
3) Year of purchase

A graph of this format would be very useful if there's enough data in it:
This is an amazing car on track. Try it and you will have a blast! Yes, you will spend some $$ (mostly tires and brakes) but you only go this way once - go for it!
I have a 2004 C2 coupe that is guards red / savannah beige, purchased new for $92,000 and now has 109,000 miles. Car has factory options of side skirts, red calipers, red seat belts, aluminum shifter/parking brake, Bose stereo. When I purchased the 2009 997 Turbo coupe brand new, I gave the Carrera to my dad for Father's Day and he loves it. I borrow it every now and then to make further upgrades and repairs for him. I restored the front end, painting the front bumper and hood and anterior third of the front fenders due to 109,000 miles of rock chips, and now the car looks brand new. I found a company that will make new front seat leathers with the factory Porsche crest in the headrest, and to replace the shifter and parking brake leather. It is every bit as enjoyable to drive as the Turbo, lighter and more nimble, and spirited in a different way, and still faster than typical brand-new performance cars (surprising for an 11 year old sports car), and only getting faster. I'm thinking about FVD upgrades: performance plenum, sport camshafts, TUV quiet exhaust, sport headers, and motorsport oil pan. Then I'll take the car to Protomotive in Arkansas for a custom ECU tune to get maximum benefit of the performance mods.
GT3 wing too radical for dad, so it is hanging on the wall in my home office as art
I actually like this thread. It's nice to see people who bought rollers and turned them into track cars and ones who bought new but don't care because they love the car.
