I will very thoroughly inspect the vehicle myself, then schedule a thorough PPI with a trusted Porsche mechanic, and look for body damage, bore scratching, run compression, and check alignment.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I spotted this 997 locally - it is repaired now, with before and after photos attached. I am not familiar with how the frame vs body works in the rear of this platform - how bad is this and what would you look for on a personal inspection? I intend to view the vehicle, and look for signs of crumpled chassis beneath the new bodywork. I will discuss the method of repair with the seller.

POST 2Original post

Welcome! You've posted this in the 996 section, as you know its a 997... That aside - i'd be going over it pretty carefully to see how it was repaired. Check the body gaps from side to side: bumper to body, taillights, rear lid. Perhaps even ask them to take the rear bumper off to inspect the repairs. They might not want to do that though. I'd at least take out the tail lights to inspect the repairs - but looks like that section may not have been affected. Also does it have a salvage title on it now? All comes down to price but at least the seller is open with you regarding the damage that has been repaired. Nothing worse (body wise) than finding undisclosed repaired damage post purchase.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16603570

Yikes... my apologies - ADMINS PLEASE DELETE - I started a new thread in the 997 forum. First post fail. It's a very strange impact - as if something relatively narrow pushed into the car. OTOH, it looks as if the actual rear bumper element beneath the bumper skin was fully removed, maybe this element took the bulk of the impact and deformation. Based on some googling, it seems the horizontal frame (radiator support?) is typically about 6" back from the inner tips of the tail-lights and vertically at some point 1/4 to 1/2 way over the mufflers. It's difficult to tell how far in this one is pushed, but from the perspective of the image, it certainly seems it's lined up with the inner edge of the muffler. The tail-light quarter skin seems fine at the top and sides, but looks bent inward from the base. I'm not familiar with what modern frame-repair machines can perform. My greatest concern is sub-frame damage and shock-tower mis-alignment. Great idea with the tail-light removal. I will request a bumper removal. The dealer has priced the car as a salvage vehicle and disclosed a salvage title. The Odo shows ~50K miles. The interior is what you would expect for a 50k mile car. Without knowing much more about the repair, how would you define a price-range for this? I'm new to the forum and will search to see if there is a section dedicated to salvage vehicles.

POST 4Original post

The Bentley 996 manual has body gap measurements. If you can find these for the 997, I would check them with a set of calipers. Even a cheap set from Harbor Freight would work. Normally vehicles with salvage titles sell for 60-80% of a similar clear title vehicle. I found similar cars(997.1 cabriolet) on Autotempest.com for around $32,000. That would mean it should range from $19,200-$26,600. How much is the dealer asking?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16603645

Based on what you describe the ask appropriately discounts for the condition. Not sure if it fully discounts for the shadiness of the dealer himself. Reviews suggest he conducts himself poorly. That said, he seems to have taken to the car - images next to the jeeps appear to be at his residence while images near the ocean were taken during a weekend jaunt with his dog. I will very thoroughly inspect the vehicle myself, then schedule a thorough PPI with a trusted Porsche mechanic, and look for body damage, bore scratching, run compression, and check alignment.

POST 6Original post

That's not a Porsche fastener. Also looks to be stainless steel, which they don't use due to cost. As a DIYer who keeps his cars for life, any screw I remove from my car when working on it gets replaced with a stainless one unless it's in a high strength application, like a Grade 8, 10, or 12 That way when I need to remove it again later, I never deal with frozen or rusted fasteners. I usually use Allen socket cap screws as it's usually easier to get those and the wrenches into tight places and with ball end wrenches, achieve decent angles without slippage. Only downside is don't drop them since a magnet doesn't help you. But I digress....

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
