Already replaced the ac compressor ($300) and oil pressure sensor ($90).
Leading evidence: 'Replace ac compressor ($300) and oil pressure sensor ($90)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Oh, and the syncro is probably a $10k gearbox rebuild.

Much easier to replace the engine mounts on the TT.

Also, the reason I want to switch from my 996 to a 996TT is to avoid an engine blow up and I certainly don't want to blow up a TT by using an overly "aggressive" tune.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All
Those in the market for a daily driver 996 May find this useful.
Purchased a 99 C2 6sp with 75k Oct 2019. Its Been my MN daily driver. Blizzaks in the winter. 90k currently.
Heres the laundry list of DIY items performed over the past year:
Air filter
Cabin air filter
Rear deck lid struts
Spark plugs
Coil packs (6)
Brake fluid flush
Oil Change (3)
Engine mounts (2) - Rein OEM
Timing belt
Starter Motor - Bosch
Fuel filter
AOS
Alternator - Off brand
Coolant tank
Water pump - Composite Impeller
Thermostat - LN
Oil filler tube
Coolant flush
Im not a professional mechanic. All are very do-able as DIY with a little help from 101 Project List book, this forum, YouTube, and patience.
Bottom line, Ive never been more happy with a car purchase (Im 51). Im grateful for the low low purchase price and zero guilt adding miles. The car has never let me down. The items listed above were performed mostly as preventative maintenance.
The low low price left enough in the bank to acquire an 03 TT X50, in Sep, as the summer driver 😊

Hello from a fellow Minnesotan; nice cars. My least favorite part of living in Minneapolis is our alley gets so rutted by January I cant get my 996 out of it. Id be happy to drive more in the winter if I could...
Congrats! I bought a '99 in March, I've done 12 of the things on your list (OK, H2O pump, thermostat & coolant planned in a few weeks) & we're about the same age. Due to working from home I'm not daily driving anything and won't come close to 15K but otherwise very similar.
Nice pair! Congratulations. I hope you'll continue to update the forum on the ends and outs of maintaining a Turbo vs a NA car. We promise not to poke fun if you consider sharing actual costs too.
I love that picture of the '99. Such pretty cars. How do you like the TT versus the N/A car?
Edit: Great that you're driving your 996 year-round too. They're too much fun to leave in the garage in the winter!
The TT is a completely different experience. Its noticeably heavier -500lbs. There is a good deal of turbo lag. But once it engages it pulls forever. The TT was really dialed down. It actually shares the same TB as a base boxster. The max boost is 8 bar or about 12psi. And the x50 has the same larger turbos and intercoolers as the gt2. Porsche left a Lot of room to boost power. Though Im more of a purest. I prefer to experience the ride as close to factory original as possible.
$17.5k for the 99 with 75k in 19. $32k for the x50. X50 has 105k. It wasnt listed as an x50. I only discovered that after I drove it home from LA, found the original window sticker with vin and option codes and confirmed the option code sticker under the hood.
The x50 is another project. Already replaced the ac compressor ($300) and oil pressure sensor ($90). Has a high idle issue and will need to remove the tranny for service to fix the 3/2 synchro eventually. Whats a Porsche without a project list???
Well theres even less room to navigate the engine compartment on TT. Swapping out the serpentine belt requires removing the power steering pully. And install is a pain. Much easier to replace the engine mounts on the TT. Oh, and the oil change is kind of a pain - four or five drain plugs to deal with. And of course and endless maze of vacuum lines. Just requires more patience than the NA. Theres less DIY info out there on the TT. There are more gearheads in the 996 forum than the Turbo forum.
Low, low...whatever that means...??? $10k, $12k, $15k, $20k (seems this is low lately...) - since it was a year ago, and it was "double low" - I'm going to guess between $10 & $15k...
^^^ Nahhh, not a ripoff by any means...just not "low, low" in my book. The most important thing is that the engine is good - a replacement will run you close to if not more than you paid for the car...
... Besides, now you've got the Turbo to keep it company! That's quite a team
I realize I can just pump up a regular TT w/a Cobb tune but it's the "rarity" factor of the X50 that appeals to me.
However, if I can't find one for the "right" price because people are starting to overpay for X50's now, I'll settle for a regular TT but I'll just talk down the price by saying that I was really looking for an X50.
LOL!!!
Also, FWIW, 450HP was a lot of HP back in the early 2000's and it's still a lot of HP now. My C7 Stingray "only" has 460 HP but it's certainly enough. A Cobb tune will push a regular TT to 480 from 420, so I really don't think it matters all that much.
That's really the only good reason to get an X50 at this point.
And if you use a good tune you can have 550+. Cobb's OTS tunes are OK. There are a lot better options out there.
True but I like Cobb tunes because they are "conservative" and are pretty much idiot proof.
Also, the reason I want to switch from my 996 to a 996TT is to avoid an engine blow up and I certainly don't want to blow up a TT by using an overly "aggressive" tune.
You can actually use a more aggressive Cobb tune mode but 480 would certainly be "good enough" for street use, which is all that I'd even do.
Snow is never the problem. Ice is the concern. Blizzaks get the job done. That said, the 99 is a very light car. Wind gusts on the interstate in Jan. can be sketchy. Blizzaks or AWD mean nothing on ice. I see plenty of AWD cars/trucks in the ditch in the winter.
Im from a different generation though. I drove a beat up trans am in HS and an rx7 in college. There was no money for snow tires.
The TT makes more sense in the winter...until some knucklehead rear ends you. 🤪
Theyre out there! Just wont find one on BAT. I found my 99 on Craigslist and the TT on Autotrader. Keep in mind I knew the work up front needed on the TT...new Denso ac compressor (done $300), oil pressure sensor (done $100), engine mounts (done $300), high idle (work in process), 3/2 synchro (probably 2022), radiator leaks (braze those this winter). Its a 17yr old car...the list will never end.
