Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been looking around at a few different vehicles and saw one had a replacement X51 engine put in after IMS failure and was wondering if anyone knows if the replacement X51 engine would have been fitted with the dual row IMS or the single row. I read somewhere that this might depend on the date that the new X51 was produced. The engine replacement was done in 2009 if that helps. Would love some more info on this topic!

POST 2Original post

It most likely would be the larger 997 IMSB if that date is accurate. But, no way to know for sure until you can see it.

Thanks for the info! Whats the difference between the larger 997 IMS and the dual row IMS?

POST 4Original post

Diameter and number of bearings. The later (larger) IMS bearing has bigger bearings, but only one load surface; the dual row had more and smaller bearings with two load surfaces to more evenly distribute the loads. Best bet is to have the IMS Solution installed irrespective of current bearing.

Can't if it has the large 997 bearing, unless you split the case...Best to pull the grease seal on those.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hmm interesting, thanks so much for the info. So is the Dual row IMS considered better than the bigger 997 IMS? Or vise versa?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 17040025

No, not at this time. The larger has a very low failure rate. Pull the seal and change your oil every 3K or six months.

POST 8Original post

Oh boy! Another IMSB thread.....these are so fun.....

d'oh! Forgot about that on the later engines...yep, you have to split the case. Don't even THINK about that foolish milling out of the case without disassembly.
