Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Probably a cost consideration in the bottling process.
Leading evidence: 'cost consideration in the bottling process' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cost consideration in the bottling process' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use unless its coming out of a 5 qt jug' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The tin foil is probably a left over from the deep dark past when screw on lids weren't all that good.

Suggestion
As I said above, the foil is a PIA and totally not needed and not used in any other oil I regularly use unless its coming out of a 5 QT jug.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have heard there is such a thing as "fake oil", like counterfit car parts.
Is there fake DT40? I had a few bottles left over from last year, and bottles from this year. Last year's bottle had foil seals. This year's did not. Is it possible they are fake? Has anyone else ordered DT40 lately and noticed this change?
Ive been using their GP1 15W 40 and they dont have the foil seals. They may have decided to forego them as they have a way of introducing themselves into the oil sump which can be very bad for the engine (they tend to wind up blocking the oil pick by getting stuck to the screen).
Doubtful. More a liability concern, I imagine. A little foil seal being introduced to your engine and saying hello by covering a pick up tube would not be a desired outcome of an oil change.
Probably a cost consideration in the bottling process. The tin foil is probably a left over from the deep dark past when screw on lids weren't all that good.
The foil chad is a great candidate for FOD contamination when left only thumbed in as is seen in the photo.
Fully remove the foil piece and eliminate the possibility it becomes dislodged when pouring the oil and ends up later blocking your pickup.
As I said above, the foil is a PIA and totally not needed and not used in any other oil I regularly use unless its coming out of a 5 QT jug. I'm glad Driven is getting away from it.
