Took a series of photos from start-up to driving at different speeds, with dealer installed oil then Mobil 1 5w-50, documenting pressure and relationship to RPMs and temperature.
Leading evidence: 'Install oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Check oil level with the stick on level ground when engine is cold after sitting "overnight".

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

New to Porsches so I wanted to get some clarification from the collective brain share re. oil pressure. Porsche gave us the gauge for a reason and I had a few questions to help me better understand on how to read it and what to look out for. The gauge will read from 0 to 5 and my questions are:
- typically at idle, the gauge will move around slightly below and above 2. Is that normal? Sign of a failing oil pressure sensor? Sometimes it will sit nice and steady and then randomly move slightly. Nothing major but it does fluctuate from around 1.8 to 2.2, if you will.
- I know it's not good when the pressure is too low but what is acceptable? Typically the pressure will rise and drop as you drive but what values should I be looking for that are in spec during idle or at cruising speeds?
- can oil pressure be too high? I've observed that sometimes the pressure will sit at 5, typically at steady highway speeds. Is this normal? I know there is a low oil pressure warning light - what about high pressure?
- if you're low on oil, will the pressure drop or raise? inversely, if oil level if high, would that affect the oil pressure? Obviously you wouldn't overfill but would there be a difference if the oil level is at the max vs low?
I'm pretty new too and I can't say I have all the answers. But I've been paying attention to this in my car lately so I can tell when the oil is fully warmed up. My theory being that the warmer the oil is, the lower the oil pressure will be.
When I start my car cold, pressure is between 4 and 5 at idle. About the time my coolant temp gauge gets to the 180 mark, oil pressure is around 3 bar at idle. My oil pressure gets down to below 2 at idle when the car is fully warmed up.
When I first tested this, my pressure was about halfway between 1 and 2 when fully warm. I noticed my oil levels at the stick and on the gauge were also getting a bit low so I added a little oil, less than half a quart. After that, my warm idle oil pressure just touches the bottom of the 2 bar mark rather than sitting halfway between 1 and 2.
This is all in relatively warm temps, 60-70 degrees.
When I was looking for my car, I read that during a test drive, the pressure should be between 4 and 5 at 4K RPM.
It's definitely possible to overfill your oil and bring the pressure too high which I hear is very bad for the engine. That's why a lot of people like to keep their level gauges around the middle.
What you're saying so far makes a lot of sense and I'll continue to watch the gauge at different stages of a drive and as the oil gets to temperature. After my first oil change by oil level has sat at the lower end so I'd go out for an evening drive and look for a flat surface to measure the oil level properly, giving it at least 15 minutes to return to the sump. When adding I was very careful not to overfill and would add maybe an 1/8th at a time. Annoyingly, my parking space is at an angle with the front of the car being higher than rear so far from an ideal place to measure oil level.
I know that oil dip stick always rules and was curious if there is a correlation between low oil level and oil pressure.
All the above are normal. pressure is directly related to RPM, as you know. The 996 engine is a hybrid dry sump, not a true dry sump, so cornering or really heavy G loads can pull the oil away from the pickup tube briefly. I took my 996 C4S to the track frequently, and the pressure would drop to 2-3 on heavy turn in to corners. Very brief, comes right back up at exit and on the straight. Not really a problem unless you take it to the high banked turns of Daytona.
Keeping the oil at the full mark is not really "very" bad for the engine. It does increase the chance of getting oil into the air/oil separator during spirited drives or on track, and you can puff a good amount of blue smoke when you next start up. Keeping it at 3/4 full should be good.
When the oil pressure sending unit starts to fail your gauge will drop to 0, you'll hear a warning chime, and you'll get the yellow error message "Oil Indicator Failure" on your multifunction display under the tach. Most often it returns to normal within a minute of failing and this gives you time to order a new unit and replace.
Everything else you've written sounds normal and on par with readings I get in my car. I try to keep my oil level about mid-way on the meter gauge / dipstick per Jake Raby's recommendation.
On idle movement is your rpm stable at idle? I wouldn't think low oil level would significantly affect oil pressure unless REALLY low or during performance cornering. High oil pressure is controlled internal to the engine not from increased volume. The oil pressure indicating system is not an extremely accurate system. It shows you have oil pressure or not. Lots of variables affect what you see from the seat. DT40 is good oil. Don't overfill the car. Check oil level with the stick on level ground when engine is cold after sitting "overnight". 15 minutes will give inaccurate readings. Nothing sounds scary to me from your original post.
Thanks gents! All great info here. Sounds like everything is within norm and I'll just continue to monitor the oil level and drive! Definitely don't want any panic attacks
