Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It worked yesterday when I picked it up from the body shop. It worked this morning driving to an art auction. But when I left the auction it had been sitting in the sun...not a "hot" day but the sun was coming through the back window and shinning on the radio so it was warm to the touch. I turned on the car...everything worked...no warning lights. Turned on the radio...all functions work...except there is no sound. All the preset stations are still preset...AM FM CD Mute Manual search...volume controls, everything says the radio is working except there is no sound. There is nothing asking me for a code either. I looked in the radio booklet but found no trouble shooting section. I finally just turned everything off and came in the house. I'll go back in a few hours and see if it has magically reselt itself. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

This happened to me when I had a speaker wire grounded. No fuses were popped and no sound till I ungrounded the wire.

Could this cause a drain on the battery? The body work was all on the back of the car...rear bumper removal and repainting...align the right tail light and rear engine compartment lid. I don't think they had to go inside the car for anything. I did have the right side window regulator replaced about two or three months ago...and the right door speaker is the only one I am aware of being subjected to work in it's location. How did you trace your speakers?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I went out to the car about four hours later and started it up and the radio worked perfectly. When I parked the car it was not working. I even waited fifteen minutes and it did not work...meaning it worked but I got no sound. Tomorrow is another day and I will wait and see what it brings. I think that the sun through the window may have overheated something in the radio console and it shut down. Anyway that is my guess. If it was a grounded speaker wire as someone has suggested, I'm not sure how it would have cured itself just sitting there. The truth is that I've always felt that "electricity" is akin to voodoo. Oh well, the car is driving beautifully.

John, if you have a CDR23 ie a 2002 onwards, then it coudl be your amp, Becker do a reconditioned one for $500!, Mine did the same thing

POST 7Original post

My Turbo has manifested this behavior a number of times. I could resurrect the battery by turning the engine off but I had to leave it off 3 minutes until the DME and other controllers actually shut down/powered down. I could have resurrected it by pulling the radio fuse for a second but that was too much work. The cause, short version, is in my car's case it was a prelude to a failed battery. After the battery failed and I replaced it this radio symptom has not reappeared. With your car in the body shop for a while a trunk was probably left open a lot and the battery drained. Or the battery was on its way out anyhow.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello Macster... Started the car this morning and everything worked fine. The battery gauge dipped down to just over 10 on startup and then went up to just a hair under the 14 and stayed there. I took the car for a good two hour drive around the city...running errands...taking some nice twisty roads. At idle the battery guage sits at just under the 14 and moves up just a fraction when under higher rpms. The radio is working fine. All this said, I will follow your advice and watch the battery and start up behavior as I have seen batteries just give it all up very quickly. Thanks.
