Just try it man...seriously, you really can't hurt or break anything....I am really bad about stuff like this and shake on my pants in attempting new stuff...this I would rate a 1 out of 10 in difficulty....comparably to disconnecting the negative on your battery...or checking your oil dipstick....how is that for easy?
Leading evidence: 'Check oil dipstick....how is' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil dipstick....how is' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes, yes, I know, probably 99.9% of the people here already got this addressed, but, I though this was an issue I would have to live with FOREVER since I got my 996. Doing some reading, I found out a diy on renntech and decided to try it out. Well, it only took about 10 minutes from the moment I got off the chair and headed to the garage....bingo!
Problem solved. Now, if I could only do the same to my M3 and my gf's Z4si, then the world would be a better place...
Cool...so I am not the only one...apparently P had a TSB on the issue. They basically "cut 130mm" off the antenna wiring OR remove 100mm from the insulated foam piece in the A Pillar on the driver's side where the antenna is located....bingo, problem solved. It took about 10 minutes...so that means the "normal person" can have this done in about 5...
http://boxster.wikia.com/wiki/Procedure
The pillar on our 996 is a LOT easier to remove...just wiggle and slightly/genlty pull and the tabs will come off. There are three taps and a clip on the bottom towards the dash...this you will pull towards you gently...
Did this just now. I just punched a hole in the foam/tape sheath and threaded the white antenna wire outside the sheath, leaving ~130mm of the antenna wire exposed. Secured the antenna wire to the sheath with a few well-placed wraps of electrical tape. This greatly enhances remote range and only took only a few minutes. You don't need to remove the visor to do this (on a '99 coupe). Be sure to lap the weatherstripping on the outside of the A-pillar trim when you're finished.

make it seem more complicated than it is.
I finally did this after knowing about it for a few months....this thread inspired me to go out and do it! 15 minutes for me...had some issues getting the trim piece back in correctly, but the actual wire mod took 2 minutes...just pulled it out of the sheath 130mm and velocroed/taped it back up and my wireless range has improved by at least 3x!
OK, my antenna (the white part) was already at 130mm, maybe because I have a 2004 996. However, my range was 3 to 6 feet. I moved the antenna to the outside of the foam lined sleeve. Now the range is 60+ feet. FYI.
Isn't it awesome? I have an office with a window to the parking lot. Before, I woud NEVER dream of unlocking/locking my car from my office...for sh7ts and giggles and tried it and it works!!
I've been thinking of doing this mod, but I can't visualize taking off the A-pillar trim piece -- looks like it goes all the way over the door to the B-pillar. Do I take the whole thing off? What can I break if I do this incorrectly?
Yes, just pull the whole thing off. There are about 5 "spring clips" which hold the A pillar on VERY firmly. I started at the end by the B pillar and worked my way toward the front. Mine was very stubborn and I had to pull quite hard. When the clips disengage, the sound is very loud, almost like plastic breaking. I really don't think you will break anything.
Tim -- Thanks for the info. I'm familiar with the spring clips for the rear panel, sounds similar. Good to know it's the whole piece extending to the B-pillar.
redridge -- I'll let you know if I break a nail!
And the service manager's answer at the Porsche dealer when I questioned weak remote batteries for the limited range???? "It's designed that way on purpose, Porsche wants you next to your car when you unlock it, they wouldn't want someone to find your keys and walk through a parking lot waiting to find the car they unlock." Duh - yeap - there are always a TON of Porsches in the parking lot...would take forever to figure out which one a Porsche key unlocks.
I'm so easy some days.
Yes - RennTech has all the details. Found it after I got the BS response from the dealer. But I did actually believe them...at first. Maybe one day I'll get brave and attempt it.
As Doug Donsbach stated at the bottom of his post (#4 in this thread) it is really not as difficult/complicated as the RennTech DIY makes it seem. Once you get the A pillar cover off, it is very straight forward.

So guys is this the same procedure for the MK2s? Looks like the MK2s already have this 130mm thing done, but gota911 mentions placing the antenna outside of the sheath?
My remote range is ****ty but also inconsistent.
The TSB (9962) is dated 7/04 but the introduction date was 3/25/04 and began with VIN 99 84S 62 2452. So it should be easy to determine if your car had this applied from the factory by comparing that information to the production date or VIN on your car.
So the dealer tells me that there's another TSB that requires them to order a new antenna and place it on the dash or something... so to clarify, is there a TSB for '03-'04 and none for the '02?
Ben, I remember reading something about another antenna across the dash also. I can't recall what it was for. Indeed, like Andy, I started reading this thread enthusiastically because of the crappy AM/FM reception. Let me reiterate: especially crappy AM reception. I'll get around to the remote range mod in a week or so. I've been meaning to do it for a while.
My baby like to play with my remote buttons. So imagine the car door locking an unlocking then imagine the alarm panic going off by 'itself'.
I'll keep the remote range on the short side.
