Leading evidence: 'being a mark1 996' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'being a mark1 996' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (to what?)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Can the swap be made without changing suspension or lowering?

Suggestion
Most people who have problems are running the wrong tire sizes.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm thinking about going from OEM (205/50/17 and 255/45/17) to aftermarket wheels with 235/35/19 and 295/30/19, but other than looks, what's the trade-off?
Diameter if fine, but front width is 1"+, and rear width is 1.6".
Will ride be noticeably harder? Does offset need to change (to what?)? Can the swap be made without changing suspension or lowering? What am I missing?
Like he said. The 19s ride terrible on my car. Stick with 18s but your tire widths are fine. My rims are gt3 spec offsets and thats what u want. Also if u have an mk1 u may have to roll the fender. Suspension height and alignment if different from stock may also effect fitment.
18"9" and 18"11" are about as big as you are going to want to go on 996.2, imo.
Yes, the ride is going to change
The picture you are looking at is 18"11" w/ 295 30s on the rear.
I am curious if any one has gone to a 35 rear tire?
What ET are your wheels? I'm actually looking at a set of those same sized wheels, 18x9 et 43 and 18x11 et 63. Wondering how the fronts fit and size of the tires. Thanks.
Great color btw.
They aren't too bad on New England roads, which also are pretty terrible. They are certainly harsher than 18s, but not terrible. WAY lighter than the stock twists, so I'm sure that helps.
You guys hating are hilarious. I have OEM 19's and they are great. Never had an issue. Just get the right tire sizes (Hint 996 are different vs 997). Most people who have problems are running the wrong tire sizes.
I swapped out my suspension with new springs/shocks and 19" tires/wheels at the same time and the ride was remarkably smoother after doing so. If you want 19's get a lightweight set that is OEM or forged quality with the correct stagger/tire sizes and offsets. You won't have any issues.
I have a set of 18 Twist, and a set of 19 Fuchs replicas. I actually enjoy the 19s more in the twisties than the 18s. Long Road trips are where big sidewall's shine imo. This has been the way with all of my sports cars with stiffer suspension.
Yes - mass and tire volume* are both important factors.
* You have to go to a lower profile tire when the wheel diameter increases. If width increases, which it usually does, actual tire volume may remain similar. I did a lot of durability testing on vehicles with performance wheel/ tire packages. My experience supports the "volume" theory.
What doesn't work for me, is pothole and other sharp (square wave) impacts. Low profile tires don't play well in that environment.
I don't think anyone is "hating". There are aesthetics and functional considerations at play here. I lean toward function. Many lean toward aesthetics. That does not constitute hatred.
The weight saving was a big plus. The difference was instantly felt. The car is way more responsive now. I agree, pot holes arent great for low pro tires. They are 235/35 and 295/30s, so not too crazy. Standard size for a 997.
I looked up wheel weights and came up with these numbers.
Stock Turbo Look Wheels
Front 18x8: 26 lb 4 oz
Rear 18x10: 31 lb 15 oz
Lobster
Front 19x8: 22 lb 4 oz
Rear 19x11: 27 lb 12 oz
Savings of approximately 16 pounds of rotating mass.
Is the OZ Leggera HLT something? In 18inch you shave off considerable amount of weight over any of the OEM wheels, especially the turbo twists. Even in 19inch they are still lighter.
You will definitely feel the difference of unsprung mass and even more the lowering of the rotational inertia.
most of the oem wheel weights can be found here

See below. Unsprung weight (mass) is more important that rotational mass (inertia).
Regardless, lighter is better (as long as strength isn't compromised). You also need to factor tire mass...
Well you save more rotational inertia then a lightweight flywheel ... dont underestimate it (I ~ r^2)
you definitely feel that in how the car responds to the throttle
True. I was thinking more of suspension dynamics. But you are absolutely correct, reduced inertia helps both acceleration and deceleration. Weight is the enemy...
They are Cargraphic 3 piece.
I just had the rears rebuilt with new inner barrels. Over two month wait for Cargraphic to manufacture and ship from Germany.
They are nice wheels, but pricey. $1800.00 just to rebuild rears. New they were around $6k
If you lower your car, this one is lowered 33mm, don't go more than 9" in the front.
There is another member from west coast on here with the same wheels on a Speed Yellow 996 (one of the best looking cars on this forum), there were very few sets imported to the USA, most stayed in Europe.

I have 19" lobster forks on mine (came with the car so I can't compare them to 18s) but I've been perfectly happy with them. If you have a C4 or C4S, you need to make sure you get the right tire sizes to match up overall circumference, but other than that they've been great.
The 2000 C4 Cab that I bought 4 months ago came w/Fuch replica 19's and low profile Nexen's on them. The set up looks great but handling and steering response suck.
Don't know how much the wheels weigh but steering is very heavy (as compared w/other 996s I've driven) and the fronts will wallow w/every change in road surface.
As is, I only feel confident getting on it on smooth straight roads or wide sweepers but in the twisties w/poor or variable road surfaces I take it slow
Already planning to swap this setup for OEM hollow twists and Michelin Pilots that I expect will improve handling remarkably but not in a great hurry to spend the $3k that it will require.
There are a handful of 19 inch wheels I think look good on these cars but I think 18s, especially a lower weight option are the way to go. My e46 M3 came with 19s and I hated it, not to mention tires were quite expensive.
yes I have these wheels but have been sitting in the garage unused for the past 5 years (should think about selling them since I have my favorite wheels on the car - mkII GT3). NYoutftr, thanks for the kind words, your car looks pretty great too! Here is my car with the rare 18" cargraphic wheels on it.
They are real nice wheels
the offsets are perfect
On the track
i just perfer these...
Common theme seems to be an aero package with these pics. 18-19s look great with aero. My 99 does not have an aero package and I feel 17s are perfect profile. 18s wouldnt look right IMO. Thoughts?
I recently purchased 19's from a 997 owner. They are equipped with Potenza's with 235/35/19 and 295/35/19. I havent put them on yet due to the wintery conditions around here. I'm hoping they will fit.....
I personally think the ride is about the same, but the handling is different. You'll have to be careful that the 19" wheels have the proper offset or you'll experience scrubbing. I went back to 18", I preferred the handling so much better and I think they look better. The diameter of the fender matches 17" and 18" better on the 996. The worst is 20" wheels on a 996. Looks ugly.
I love my 19's on 235/295's. I am also lowered with the Eibach Pro-kit.
Only problem is being a Mark1 996. The rear fenders had to be rolled and even pulled a little to stuff the 295's under there with my offset.
19x8.5 et51 in front, 19x11 et56 in rear. Wheels are much lighter than the ones I previously had on the car.
