Weird that the instructions recommended also switching from 93 octane to diesel fuel, but why would i trust my 996s owners manual, same people who wrote it also also designed those headlights!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I hate when people post this. Absolutely the stupidest thing you can say. To me that means one of two things.
1 One you dont know the answer so shut up
2 Its someone new who might be bring up a new thread put in different words. This helps many of us.
I use search also and sometimes 300 different posts show up. Who has time? Maybe if you work in an office and you screw around all day of forums but not me. I am a contractor. I dont have time to sort through 300 posts to find the answers to a question someone might know off the top of there head.
Search can also be your frustrating enemy.
And if you dont like what I have to say GOOD because I want to **** you off.
I bet most derogatory things that are said in computer forums would never be said face to face. A computer can make a man boy act like he has a set of *****. Why not be nice and act like a gentleman. Help people out. After all we are here for one reason. We like our cars.
I agree with this, but only to a point. In the situation described above, a response of “search is your friend” is annoying and certainly not helpful. However, it’s equally annoying to see a “new to Porsche, new to 996, anything I should know about?” thread. In that case, no response at all is better than “search is your friend”.
I agree as well. I'm new to Rennlist and to Porsche. I've been on Internet forums since usenet newsgroups were popular (OK, they never really were "popular") so I usually know what I'm doing. The search function leaves a lot to be desired and there are no real FAQs. I have decent luck when I go to advanced search and search by title only.
After I read a post when searching, I keep clicking on the "back to forum" or the direct link to the forum thinking it will land me back in my search results. Nope, my search is cleared out and I have to start over. I haven't seen a "back to results" button. I guess you just need to use the browser's back button. That's what I've been doing.
Are you able to search with quotes so you can find a phrase and not just individual words? Also, can you use the minus sign like in google to not search certain words?
And if you don't read previous posts & start a new one the next time 301 will show up. When I read a new thread post I read enough of it to see if it has a unique question, if not SEARCH.
Stupid is as Stupid does!
Lighten up Francis. Lately we've had multiple members starting new threads on the exact same topic on the same day or the next day. There are very few questions about these cars that haven't been asked and answered previously. Search is indeed your friend. If you don't like the Rennlist search function, try Google Advanced search:
https://www.google.com/advanced_search
or preface your Google search string with "site:rennlist.com"
I don't think your "I'm too busy because I'm a contractor" defense holds up.
Yep. Doing a Google search on a 996 issue almost always takes you straight to a Rennlist thread thats bang on the money. Doing a search on Rennlist usually doesnt. Weird.
When I see another IMSB, Buying a 996. What should I look out for or What oil do you use thread Im
Use the browser's back button.
These threads have a lot of information that you would find in a FAQ:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ssues-etc.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...96-thread.html
Use Google to search the site if you're not happy with the results.
Sometimes people just want their OWN thread.. I'm totally okay with that. Sometimes new stuff comes up / out.
If members aren't the ones paying for "band width", then WTF does it matter to them if someone ask the same basic questions again in their own thread.

OP you should get off the computer and go for a long jog in the park. This kind of irrational anger is not good for your health. Your blood pressure must be high 🙄Some of the short and long-term health problems that have been linked to unmanaged anger include:
headache
digestion problems, such as abdominal pain
insomnia
increased anxiety
depression
high blood pressure
skin problems, such as eczema
heart attack
stroke.
On one hand, the op is an entitled snowflake with ridiculous expectations on how a technical forum 'traditionaly' operates.
on the other, too many threads go sideways 3-4 posts in on here, become diluted, does it really make a difference? I click on a Raby video review thread, and get a discussion on left handed monkey wrenches....
I don't always see eye to eye with Jake Raby on Here, but have great respect for his technical contributions. Stuff like His comment on engine mounts was very insightful, which keeps me coming back. It just takes wading through the minutia to find it. So yes, searching isnt what it use to be.
I do use the back button. I even mentioned that in my post. I won't go into why that's usually not a good thing to do on modern web interfaces.
I've already read those FAQs.
The suggestion by the other guy on how to search rennlist with Google is a good one. I'm going to try that.
Bill your not thinking or you lack intelligence. IF I **** YOU OFF THATS GOOD BECAUSE I WANT TO!
In other words this shouldnt **** you off but if it does well then I want to because your not capable of understanding the situation.
Bill how is your car running these days?
I'm puzzled by this. You asked if you should use the back button, I said yes. You said there were no FAQs on the site and I provided links. You asked about better ways to search, I mentioned how to use Google Advanced search. What am I missing?
Is there a way to block everyone who joined in the last year or two?
Whatever they had in there when it left the factory should still be in it.
Like, the actual oil, not just the brand. Car has a "lifetime no oil change" feature.
Thank god I still had this part. I bet you 90% of these parts were tossed with the paper filter without even being noticed. Christ they don’t even sell them with a new filter.
i bet you that this is where a multitude of problems are coming from. Scratching, clogging, blogging who else knows these served an important role in keeping the oil clean.
It's actually easier than that. Google search is built-in, you just have to select it. It's an option for the search window in the black control bar at the top of the forums.
Thx! My neighbor's cousin's friend mentioned that he heard about someone who knew a guy who told him that this ICBM thing can explode. Or something like that. Please post up what you know.
[In Brian' defense, though, the search feature reeks. I have had many topics where I knew there was an old thread, but I couldn't find it.]
I'm not and don't get pissed off easily often, so you'll have to try harder...
Car runs great!
I was searching brake post's and saw You commented in this three year old thread >
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post16376695
It "triggered" you, and started this topic.
"Modern web interfaces" translates to young inexperienced output of 20 something web programmers who are to arrogant to follow standards.
Any programmer that writes code that doesn't respect a standard browser function should be beaten down with his keyboard.. Probably hit on my biggest pet peeve in all of the internet. its a ANSII freeking standard for pete's sake.. Its that way to help prevent other issues.. We have enough random activity from the differences between the browsers as it is..

Dont be in a hurry to condemn because he doesnt do what you do or think as you think or as fast. There was a time when you didnt know what you know today.

The qualifications that I have to contribute to this thread is that I'm a beloved 996 owner and I have achieved "addict" status. I really like reading this forum for both knowledge and entertainment.
I can read a simple post and predict if a firestorm is going to result. I don't understand why such emotional responses result in a common guy asking a simple question. Yes, the OP may not be as learned as you or as experienced as you but often the response to a simple question challenges the OP's intelligence, motives, expertise, etc.etc.
The search function - you're being a bit disingenuous if your stance is that it works well on this forum.
I'm in the Traning & Development business and I hear the same questions over and over. In fact, I know what questions I should be asked during each session I'm delivering. What if I got angry because someone asked me that same question that was asked in a previous class, session, module, etc. I was of the opinion that the purpose of the forum was to share information and to fellowship.
I sincerely appreciate the advice that the experts and "long timers" provide to the forum. Without the benefit of your expertise and experience, this forum would not be as successful as it is. Please help us to get to where you are without belittling me or ridiculing me or just telling me to use the search function.
Remember, you were not always as knowledgeable as you are today - it was journey. Help me while I'm on my journey.

"...and I have achieved "addict" status".
Honors and benefits. Already at the age of nine.
The issue isn't that the OP was asking a simple question. The issue is that the guy knows how to do it but is too hip for the room and wants other people to find the information for him.
I have a feeling the chilly responses OP received on this thread were a result at least in part of other threads/posts Brian996 has made since joining RL recently. Guy came across as arrogant and dismissive and posts were often unintelligible.
Oh my. Pure gold.
Or just
right
a new thread...
This has been my observation. Plenty of good advice has been given to him, yet he refuses to believe or accept it. Preferring to moan that he doesn't get enough respect. Sorry kid, respect is earned. Keep trying...
Brian, this thread was clickbait. Here I come to celebrate using the search tool and - boom - I come to find out it's a troll post.
Also, you would never, ever make me angry. You're an absolute gem.
It's threads like this one that make me visit the 996 forum
less and less
...…..and I still own a 996.
Oh wait, I just clicked on the thread again, didn't I.
NS, everyone quit picking on him or he'll go to the principal , uh moderator.
When something doesn't work as expected, 45 years of IT crap tells me to find another way, then ask....
Some people are so lazy that they demand others to the work (search in this case) for them and they thing that's perfectly OK. When I need information, I put all my efforts into looking for it and ONLY if I can't find it, I might post a thread asking for some guidance. Yes, there are several threads that go sideways but so what? Keep reading all of it and you will eventually find what you are looking for. Even the garbage posts are worth reading if for nothing more than to see or understand all the confusion that some problems create. After that, you should have enough info to figure out what to or not to do but some people are so incapable of doing anything without someone holding their hands (or wiping their a$$) that they feel they are entitled to demand others do the work for them for FREE! The OP is a contractor, how the heck can not he/she see the problem asking for other to do the work for for free?
Sorry, but people who have been here a while are only trying to keep the "which oil" or "which IMSB" threads down to 5 a day. You may not like the answer, but I also like a front page that actually has useful threads . I don't find the search on here too hard to use, and more often than not I find multiple threads on the issue I'm having. Just to address your post, 1) is rarely true given how many times questions are repeated, and 2) doesn't make a ton of sense. How many different words are there for oil?
Your threads go zero to ****show in record time, I'll say that for you. Maybe its not us that has the problem
It's much better to just burn strangers' time in forums than bother reading/learning on your own?
"DIY" - "do it yourself" - can apply to the whole process...
You might even find that you learn stuff from reading a few of those 300 posts.

Wait...what happened to the OP? He came back to post #16 to bark back at another forum person. Then in post #24 he dropped back in after several told him what the piece is to share that he didn't throw out the check valve and now gone. Not a Thanks, kiss my a-- or anything. Maybe he's saying:
The biggest issue with "search is your friend" is the next time someone actually
does
search, they find a thread with the same question they had and the only reply is "search is your friend".
You guys aren't being serious so I'm going to put it right on the line
. There's been a lot of complaints already. Fooling around on the course, bad language, smoking grass, poor
caddying
. If you guys want to get fired. If you want to be replaced by golf carts, just keep it up!
Wrong, Grasshopper. In most cases people provide the links and offer that advise so that they don't make the mistake again. People are generally very helpful here. It's seems that the only people who feel insulted are those who joined in the last few months.
Wow! Just when I thought Brian couldn't top his last thread, he comes and proves me wrong.
My thoughts...
Rennlist is guilty of promoting this sin of "asking a question" BEFORE doing a simple search. When new users come to Rennlist the first thing they see is a pop up comment box encouraging them to "ask a question" to members of the forum. The same things happens with a lot of my departmental websites that have a comment box on the main page. Instead of looking for answers, many of the users will just type a question which is then sent to a listserv for the department to answer. Most of the questions are the same over and over again. For example, many are just asking when an event will be starting, but they fail to notice the calendar on the same page that would show them all upcoming events. Oh well. We're guilty of promoting laziness I guess with this feature.
I too prefer to ignore if an answer is readily availble rather than post "do a search"
In order to help people find answers, I would LOVE to see this forum sub divided into further sections like:
interior mods
exterior mods
audio
mechanical
suspension
etc ...
The other forums I am one are subdivided this way, and it makes it sooo much better. Also, threads don't get buried so fast.
Just a suggestion.
i bought an imported IMSB made from LEGOs and it hasn't failed yet. Weird that the instructions recommended also switching from 93 octane to diesel fuel, but why would i trust my 996s owners manual, same people who wrote it also also designed those headlights!
Oh darn...I forget the Johnny Irish dress code for making repairs on your Porsche. Or maybe it was "sit in the dealer waiting room and get served by the hot barrista and look at your fancy rolex to pass the time?"
Hello all, new to the forum, I'm shopping for a 996. Which is better, the 6MT or the Tiptronic?
And I heard that car color is important, are the silver 996s really faster?
of course silver is the fastest color. Haven’t you ever heard of the silver bullet? Only a 6 time world champion. pay no attention to the fact that this is not a 996, or even a Porsche.
See the resemblance? No? close one eye and squint really hard.
