Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

A previous owner installed a remanufactured transmission from G box 13 years and 70,000 km ago.
Leading evidence: 'Install remanufactured transmission' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install remanufactured transmission' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The six speed transmission in my 1999 car has been making worn bearing noises since before I bought it earlier in 2019. A previous owner installed a remanufactured transmission from G box 13 years and 70,000 km ago. Should I be surprised the transmission didnt last longer?
Gbox warranty is
12 months, 12,000 miles. The process shown on their site (circa 2007 - may not be current) indicates they reuse all parts that are not visibly damaged when the transmission is torn down; seems like the longevity could vary.
Any chance what you're hearing is a dying throwout bearing?
It could be a throw out bearing. The noise stops when the clutch is in. Is that a tell?
Pinion bearing — sure, could be. Isn’t that inside the transmission, though?
Yes, the pinion is part of the differential, which shares the same case assembly as the transmission.
When the clutch is in and the car isnt moving, the transmission isnt moving.
If the noise is there when you release the clutch and the car isnt moving, then its not the pinion or diff.
The other thing you could check is spin both the rear wheels with the engine off and in neutral. The transmission gears are moving in this case. If the noise persists, its probably not the input shaft bearings or throw out bearing.
The throw out and the pilot spin when you push the clutch in,, the pilot stops spinning when the clutch is engaged.
The throw-out will spin or not with the pedal out depending on how worn it is,, mine have always made noise as they failed just as the clutch releases. Or if the free play is too skinny.. it varies..
If you have a Mcleod style throwout bearing,, all bets are off.
I started getting pinion bearing noise around 90k, Gbox said that was typical. So 70k doesn't sound impossible. Not sure if a remanufactured gearbox has a better pinion bearing than OEM?
At idle it sounds just like a loose heat shield. It stops when I press the clutch pedal.
Its loudest when lugging the engine in higher gears. (Yes, I know not to do that). Its dependent on engine speed and throttle position; not road speed.
Whatever it is, Im happy to pay what it takes to fix, but the frustration of not having a solid diagnosis is, um, frustrating.
What do these symptoms rule out, and what possible diagnoses are left?
Sounds to me that the dual mass flywheel springs have failed (collapsed or broke) adn they are rattling around when there is no load on them. I had this happen to my Passat that had the same type of flywheel.
+1 on the DMF, that's the first thing that came to mind when I read your detailed symptoms..
I hear the same complaints from people who install LWFW, rattling at idle with the clutch out, stops when push clutch in....rattling like a bucket of bolts when lugging the engine...
