Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check oil and it was well within limits' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ."' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Was just about to add what would have made 9.25 quarts when something in my head said "stop and double check."

If you have done a few hundred miles since the oil change, just leave it alone.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. I did an oil change on my 99 Carrera and was a little concerned about how much I put in. It is a smidge past the max line, right about at that dot above the max line. Can this cause any harm?
I put in 9 qts every oil change, which generally gets it to about half, measured when cold. You might not have let enough drain. After the initial drain, I let mine drain very slowly for 45 minutes or so.
As others have said, if it is above the fill mark, some needs to come out. Cars in general do not like the crankcase overfilled.
I removed filter element and drained about a cup worth. Checked oil and it was well within limits. Ran it for a day and checked again and it was still a little on high side. I guess I will drain a little more. I dont trust the electric gauge, Im going off the dipstick. Oh, I let that thing drain for 45+ minutes.
My car takes 9.5 qts. to get it right to the center of the dipstick and the electronic gauge (no deep sump kit). Regardless, of how much it takes to get yours to the same spot, that's where the level belongs (according to "the experts" - not me). If you're over the full line (or even on it) you run the risk of overwhelming your AOS and creating real problems. Drain it down to the center of the dipstick (and the gauge on level ground), and only refill when it approaches the bottom line - 4 ozs. should bring it back to the center.
Thank you for the feedback. Ive been driving it a few hundred miles since I did oil change so hopefully I didnt snocker anything up. Ill be draining some more out this afternoon.
Actually, I think you are okay. When I change my oil, I put in two bottles, 10 quarts and then just a tad more. Stock engine and oil pan. I never have any problems and @145,380 miles now, I must be doing something right. I would not screw around with it anymore. If you have done a few hundred miles since the oil change, just leave it alone. My two cents....

Wouldn't "Engine Oil quantity without oil filter" be "infinity"?
My car takes 8 1/2 - 9 quarts to get to the halfway point between Low and Max on the electronic gauge. I add 8 quarts, run the engine briefly and let it sit for a while. I then measure again and top off as necessary. I verify with the dipstick. It's important to measure the oil when the car is level. I recheck it the next day as well. A little low is better than a little too much.
Changed my oil the other day. Was just about to add what would have made 9.25 quarts when something in my head said "stop and double check."
Glad I did. 8.75 was the exact perfect amount (for my car).
