Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the first generation water cooled 911 Porsche. I remember all the spite and anger of Porsche enthusiasts before these hit the marketplace. I think they are splendid cars. Seems they have a weak point or two but dont most cars? I understand that a $75,000 car or more at the time should have no problems whatsoever but its as if this company totally restarted itself with this car. From what I can see from reading is that the better years are from 2000-2004. The first couple of years have the most issues. Is this correct? I am looking forward to learning more about these cars and the people who drive them. I wont ask to many questions. From what I can see so far from reading the first several pages its not a good idea to ask questions on this particular section of the website. Many people would prefer we use the search button. I think I understand why but at the same time wouldnt this be a dull forum. So anyway hello from a perspective lurker. 😈

POST 2Original post

Welcome! 99 is arguably the best year. Avoid the 01s.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Why is 1999 the best year and what is wrong with 2001 996. Please forgive my ignorance.

Search is definitely your friend here. Youll find tons of info. Whatever you do, dont start a new thread asking why.....😁.

POST 5Original post

Aw, go ahead and ask questions. Get the "search is your friend" comments out of the way right up front. Just messin' with you. Welcome.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry I don’t understand what you mean “search is your friend” I am not searching for anything in particular. Just trying to learn about the first generation water cooled 911’s. Im sorry if I inadvertently made some type of mistake.

POST 7Original post

Its all good. I was referring to a couple recent hotly commented on threads on here. 99s are considered good because they came with a double row IMS bearing. The 01s came with a single row. The failure rate on the 99s appears to be significantly lower. But if you do a search here in RL, youll find lots of great info on this topic.

POST 8Original post

"it’s not a good idea to ask questions" Not true, but it's not okay to ask a question that has been discussed thousands of times. Do some research before asking questions.

Satan666 as a user name....Is Brian996 using his alias to chastise the forum for calling out the fact that he is too lazy to look up his own info? This gets better by the minute.

POST 11Original post

Satan, buy my car for $10,000,000,000,000 and we can talk about transferring a certain strange soul.

Welcome to the Madness! It's an inside joke, you're fine! Ask Brian996 why the 99 is the best year, he's got the inside scoop on the 99 996!

POST 13Original post

99s have a dual row IMS bearing which is less prone to failure than 00+ which had a single row bearing and was part of the class action lawsuit. Everyone has deviating opinions on single vs dual row etc. From what I gather, if you get a 99 with out an IMS replacement, you should be okay waiting to replace it at the next clutch service. YMMV

POST 15Original post

Just to clarify, all 99s, many 00s, and some 01s have the dual row bearings.
