It beats me why the owner didn't have some of the faults repaired before putting the car up for sale.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

had a PPI performed on what i was told was a mint low mileage silver/black 2003 C4S - so many freakin phone calls and emails back and fourth to confirm service history and condition with the seller to make certain i wasn't wasting my time - he said everything was working perfectly, no dings or dent/no scratches. we agreed on a price which was based on a mint low mileage car.
had PPI performed 2 days ago at very reputable shop in so calif:
- minor leaking oil out of bell housing
- clutch grabbing high and very stiff - needs clutch
- high beam switch not working
- rear muffler supports broken and need re-welding
- 1 dent on sunroof panel and 1 dent on rear fender - when i asked service tech how bad the dents - he said similar to a hail storm dent and very noticeable.
i tried negotiating a reduced price but seller wouldn't budge. guess he doesn't want to sell his car.
glad i had backup - having PPI done today on a car i liked better (2003 C4S seal grey/black) with a little more mileage - PPI results in by this afternoon
I had a similar experience many years ago looking for an Alfa Romeo GTV6. Wanted a 100% rust free example (difficult to find) seller told me was rust free. Drove 100+ miles to check it out. First thing I notice is HOLES around the windshield big enough to fit my thumb thru. Immediately turned around and drove home. This was pre internet so didn't have any pics.
i just save it for the internet - it's how i get my only joy in life
*and your english is incorrect - its "save" it for the internet not "safe" it for the internet - heres an example for you since i've heard over in OT you are very limited in your english skills: i edited all the ****ty things i said about you in my original reply post and "saved" it. (not "safe" it)
while the chase is a thrill for me, i've really wanted the turbo body style for many years - the C4s will be a "keeper" for me - keeper meaning more than a year - i can't see settling for anything but a turbo for long term ownership and that will happen.
Some of that looks like it could be neglect, but I think you're holding the owner to too high of a standard. Isn't this why you get a PPI in the first place?
If every owner knew exactly what issues their car had, and were open and honest with the buyer, there's be no need for a PPI. That's why you had the car inspected, right?
The PPI is protection for the buyer, and a bargaining chip. If the seller doesn't want to play ball and haggle price, walk away from the deal.

I would say I am one that likes the "Chase" but a PPI is always in order. Not every owner has a clue. These care are getting old (10+ years). But walk if they don't get that there are things that need to be done. OR work out a compromise. I have had over 10 996's. All unique in their own right. What are you willing to do to bring it up to your standards? For example, the plastic parts in these things is at end of life in many cases. You will need to replace things. Seals are aged. Bushings are tired.
Mine that I currently got needs some TLC in these areas. But the overall car is solid. A ding here and there happens in 10 years. Get them removed. And then refresh the other parts and you will have a rock solid car.
Just my .02 worth after spending some quality time in the garage today replacing wear items.
I think PPI's vary as much as owners descriptions... Some shops miss or don't check what many Rennlist forum regulars might think is important (examples: an oil filter or sump pan examination on a 996, motor mount condition, carefully checking for any signs of water pump or AOS deterioration) and point out scary sounding stuff that is fairly trivial or just plain incorrect.
It's a hassle, but if a non-local car sounds good from phone conversations and looks good from pictures, there is no substitute for checking it out carefully in person. Given a choice of flying out to check out a car in person or having a PPI done, I will always pick looking at it

It beats me why the owner didn't have some of the faults repaired before putting the car up for sale. ie:- dents as large as golf ***** from the hail, especially the clutch. If he didn't have a clue in his head that this was needed before selling a car, then IMHO he is "one ******" to say the least. Especially telling Groozvilla there was nothing wrong with the car and that it was in MINT condition. He deserves a tire iron around his head I M H O.
Not disclosing the dents was stupid. Repairing them prior to the sale would also have been stupid, since people freak out when panels have been resprayed. You can easily blow past the thousand-dollar mark fixing up one or two panels...
I think the scary part is the dents. How do you miss that? How do you expect a buyer not to see them immediately? That alone would make me walk because now you know you can't trust that seller. The other stuff wouldn't kill the deal for me. The clutch pedal feel is subjective - you see posts on here all the time about owners thinking their clutch feels like it's about to go out only to realize it's fine. Broken welds on muffler bracket, if not causing a rattle, would be easy for an owner not to notice. Minor oil leak - ditto. I don't even remember the last time I tried my high beam switch. A PPI will ALWAYS find something - you can't have a zero tolerance mindset. The PPI should confirm the seller's description of the car's condition - if the seller was pretty accurate in his description, then I'm fine with some minor issues and won't try to continue to negotiate price over petty items. That attitude shows you are reasonable and makes the seller more likely to take your calls after the sale when you have a question or need to ask a favor. I've stayed in touch with many people that I've bought from and sold to over the years. They are enthusiasts just like me and appreciate the other party in a transaction where a fair price is paid for a nice car. But, if the other side can't be trusted to disclose obvious defects like dents, then you're headed for a bad transaction if you continue with that seller.
Caveat: I would get a 2nd opinion on the clutch and if I was convinced it was about to go, then I'd have to negotiate price further. Of course, then it is not a minor issue. Point is that an owner could legitimately overlook disclosing a stiff clutch pedal feel noted by a mechanic on a PPI.
i think under normal circumstances i'd agree with you however in my discussion with seller, it was agreed that we would renegotiate the sale price if there were any "issues" determined after having the PPI performed.
having just sold my 2001 996, akers porsche here in seattle did the PPI last week and found a couple hidden issues with my car - tires very worn on very inside portion and the airbag light was not a simple reset as i thought when describing the car - me and buyer agreed to split the cost of issues and i reduced the price by $500.
the seller i was dealing with was stubborn and not a man of his word - i have problems with people like that especially when i commit my time and $.
BTW, the PPI i had performed on the 2003 C4S in phoenix 3 days ago passed with flying colors - great car w/66K miles and lots of options, all services and big 60K service done 6 months ago, perfect exterior and interior - seal grey/black which i really prefer in the widebody - **IMS has never been done
i purchased it yesterday - having IMS/clutch/RMS and AOS done this week at shop in phoenix- doesn't need a clutch but silly not to have it done while tranny is dropped
i fly down 6/24 and drive home
My 996 currently for sale needs a front bumper re spray and has a nice little 3" scratch on the drivers side door. I was going to get those things taken care of, but I agree with you, some buyers think you are hiding a major issue.
Of course I will disclose these things before someone comes by to check out the car. I wouldn't want to waste anyone's time, especially my own
