Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Been watching LeMans all day and a few hours ago she says "since they're so cheap, let's get another 996 for the track" So this is where I need some help and advise from you lot. We've had the 01 C4 since new so I've only vaguely followed the used market and really don't know squat about building a track car. The things I do know are that it will be a .1 (just our preference), have a 6MT, and be a coupe. Ideally it would have the factory Aerokit and be a C4 (again, preference) as well as have no sunroof, but I know that combination will take a long time to find for a price we'd be willing to pay for a project car. I know I should look for a LSD car if we go with a C2, but that's a rare option right? I don't expect to bother plating it for street use (means she has to let me set the Cayenne up for towing and get a trailer ). It would probably see mixed DE and AutoX use and it's going to be more about fun and the project rather than being competitive. So given street use isn't important, what needs to be focused on? Anything different? What should I really be expecting to pay for decent stock example that needs minimal work to be track ready? I've been seeing $15-20 numbers thrown around (and there is a 00 C2 down the street for $18) the forum, are we really seeing new lows or are these exceptions? For those of you that have built track cars, what modifications will we want to do in the near term? Long term? Above the price of the car and getting it up to snuff, what kind of money are we talking about in a year? What does track insurance run and is it worth it?

POST 3Original post

Why the preference for a C4? Stuff you can start looking around for online: bolt-in roll cage, new seats that are harness-compatible, harnesses. Fire extinguishers. Battery disconnect. Deep-sump oil pan with upgraded baffles to prevent oil starvation. Are you planning to pay someone for a full race-prep car, or are you going to build an entry-level track car? For DE and AX, you have options: Keeping it stock so you stay in the stock classes, or prepping it and paying the point price for the upgrades. My unsolicited two cents: Start out it driving it stock - just show up and drive. Hell, I wouldn't even start out with great tires. Work your way up your stock class...once you're competitive @ stock, then find yourself a good shop for your suspension upgrades and other race prep. A couple PCA guys I'm familiar with show up in stock cars (986 Boxsters, 944s, etc.) and beat the hell out of the guys with semi-slick tires and full suspension. These are the guys you hope never buy a race-prepped car. When you get to the point where you're pulling out the passenger seat to get an extra tenth faster, THEN it's time to spend the big money. If you do stay stock, I recommend going to your indy for an alignment. Tell them you plan to drive it exclusively on the track so they can dial in lots of negative camber. You may find that AX guys can be tight with their alignment specs, but your shop should be able to hook you up with a good baseline alignment.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

5CHN3LL, We like AWDs and have been happy with hers in the limited events it's seen (she wants to do more but is afraid to hurt her baby ). I am aware that while it has advantages, it also has some disadvantages too. As I said though, I expect we'll get a C2 given the target we'd like to it (if that is even really possible). Starting with a stock car and building it up is definitely the plan, but it's more about the fun (both running and wrenching) than being competitive and worrying about how we stack up. The build up would definitely be slow and over time. There will be stiff I have to pay a shop for, but I also want to tackle an ever increasing amount.

POST 5Original post

Nice. The most immediate thing I'd consider is the oilpan upgrade. Your wife rocks (as so eloquently stated above).

POST 7Original post

I have a '99 C4 w/ the aerokit. And a set of new OEM GT3 seats. Does your wife have a single sister?

POST 8Original post

As Alpine indicated, the rigidity of the C4 is amazing. Even with one wheel cocked, there are no groans or creaks - and my suspension results in a fair amount of time with 3 wheels on the ground. My '96 Corvette, which has MASSIVE frame rails, is floppy by comparison. The increased rigidity of the C4 chassis wasn't something I knew about when I purchased the car, but it is an awesome +1.

She does have a single brother that is in the market for a new car. Not sure he'd be interested though

POST 10Original post

It's nice to see others have a SO that understands hobbies and is willing to support them. Congrats apparently not many have them!

POST 11Original post

Buy a car that is already setup to do DE, brake pads, clutch, Limited slip, shocks, springs, sway, oil pan, wheels, engine coolers etc. It is always cheaper since you never get the money back from adding performance parts. Keeping it street legal is a good thing to do unless you have a local track membership. It is nice to be able to drive a car before a event to insure it is working properly.

POST 12Original post

Trj had a '03 C2 with a great set up for the track listed in the member classifieds ... might be worth taking a look before he starts parting out the DE mods. https://rennlist.com/forums/for-sale...-for-sale.html

This +1,000. Much better option. Run street tires until you can't go any faster then switch to a track only tire.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The problems with a sorted car are that it will be out of the range for what we want to put down up front and we also don't get to do the building (not only does she like fast cars, she's not afraid to get greasy).

POST 15Original post

^^^ true. Unless you have enough cash to plunk down on a well sorted, low hour, non-crashed car, with a good amount of spares, I would rather build to your custom specs. I find low priced track cars generally need some amount of attention not only to the normal consumables, but to other items that tend to prematurely wear out on track cars. BTW, I think JrGordon just snatched up what you were looking for a week or so ago.

POST 17Original post

If Hurdi does everything else the way he brakes, you won't need to worry about excessive wear and tear on the Mrs. She might have a few extra stickers stuck to her, but otherwise she'll be unharmed. (Sorry, Hurdi, couldn't help myself)
