I called the top shop I had used before and they said they couldn't do it because the window was unique and it had a zipper that zipped the window across the top into the headliner.

If replacing the window is my only option, I may have to bite the bullet to get the dealer to fix it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So with all this warm-to-cold-to-warm weather down here in TX, I found the top down overnight after it went cold. The next morning, I rose the top and the rear window ripped in half - must've been too cold and I should have let it warm up a bit before raising.
Any suggestions on how to fix the window for cheap? Local top shop says they can't do it because it requires a specific Porsche window that zips into the headliner across the top of the window. Porsche dealer wants $2200 to fix it (YOW!). Window costs about $800 form dealer, I'm sure cheaper elsewhere.
Questions:
1) Can I source a replacement window for cheaper than $800? If so where?
2) Is this difficult to replace or can a moderately capable DIYer do it?
3) Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
Here are some links. (or do a search) Mine was just separating, so I repaired it myself. Any good convertible top shop or marine canvas upholstery place should be able to deal with it. They can sew in a new plastic window (I don't think they need to get if from Porsche). But, it's a lot of labor, and the best price I could find was about $800.

Frisbee - thanks for the links. I searched before posting and most people have experienced the separation issue as well. I also had the separation issue and had a local top shop repair it for relatively cheap ($200 or so). Ironically, the dealer had told me to go to this top shop, because they would just end up sending it there themselves.
But my problem is worse than the separation issue - my window is actually split open. I called the top shop I had used before and they said they couldn't do it because the window was unique and it had a zipper that zipped the window across the top into the headliner.
I'll do some more research and post back my findings.
@pterfloth - those prices are pretty damned good. Thx!
@rwiii - I went to Jim's Top Shop here in Austin, TX. The local dealer pointed me to them at the time (a couple of years back). Good people, IMHO.
I did some more research and I was cautioned against trying to replace the window myself as the zipper element across the top is more for show, and the top actually has to be "burned in" to the headliner. I don't understand what exactly that means.
If replacing the window is my only option, I may have to bite the bullet to get the dealer to fix it. I have to call around a bit more here in town first.
For now, duct tape <cringe> seems to be keeping the rain/snow out. Yes we had a whopping 1 INCH a couple of weeks ago - crippled the city.
Hey 996 in TX...If you have to replace I would consider the glass option, I hear it has a defrost which is nice, or maybe trying to purchase the hard top for winer. I have heard there are a ton of them around but I do not know for sure...I am in PA and have the hard top and I really like it for Winter. (although I only got to use it for about 2 months before I had an engine mishap.
Anyway, either of these solutions may save you from the cold weather cracking of the plastic window in the future. I have heard of this happening quite a bit.
@psuboy - thanks for the hard top suggestion. I have been thinking about this option as well, as I'll likely leave the top down in the summer. But if it rains, I'm screwed.
Good luck in getting your engine repaired. Yikes!
I have actually been thinking about this a bit. I used to live in Plano. I think if I were still down there I would opt for the glass back window. It has a defog option and you don't have the haze issue. The hard top is nice but there are issues with storage and taking on and off by yourself. When I get my car back I am going to build something to just hoist it to the ceiling of my garage. I want something I can set up and put the roof on myself.
