Suggestion

I've tried the under dash method (twice) to replace the electrical portion of the switch, but then I wised up to removing the air vent and a small piece of the upper duct to get to the switch quite easily.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Even with the lousy location, the swap took all of 20 minutes, and it fixed the myriad issues that cropped up over the past 2 weeks, including AC not coming on, the key not releasing, the lights not coming on, and new for today, the starter sticking in the "start" position.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

...designed the location of the set screws for the ignition switch? As I took a moment to catch my breath, with my head resting on the brake pedal and my feet dangling over the driver's seat, I wished fiery death upon that engineer. Even with the lousy location, the swap took all of 20 minutes, and it fixed the myriad issues that cropped up over the past 2 weeks, including AC not coming on, the key not releasing, the lights not coming on, and new for today, the starter sticking in the "start" position. Thankfully I knew that easing the key counterclockwise a few degrees will temporarily correct the electrical gremlins, but it was sure nice to get the new switch in and have the 996 go back to normal. Although it requires some flexibility, the DIY is a piece of cake and a quick fix if your switch is going south.

POST 2Original post

...funny, it seemed easy to install the set screw when the dash was built in the factory when the dash was being assembled upside down on a work table or something.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Heh. I was thinking the same thing. When it was in a jig, bottom-side-up, with a half-dozen robots working on it, no problem.

POST 4Original post

You mean you don't yet have a robot to do your bidding?

POST 5Original post

I've tried the under dash method (twice) to replace the electrical portion of the switch, but then I wised up to removing the air vent and a small piece of the upper duct to get to the switch quite easily. You still need the shortened screwdriver but at least you don't have to be a 4ft gnome with 3 hands and no legs to replace it..... As a point of interest, I now keep a spare switch in my garage - the replacement I installed last January only lasted 1,000 miles before collapsing internally....

POST 6Original post

Does anyone think a shot of WD40 down inside where the key goes would solve a lot of ignition problems before they develop?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 11451474

If you ever tried to replace the ignition lock housing on a 993, you'd be praising the 996 engineers for their lovely design The majority of the issues are with the plastic housing of the electrical portion cracking, so probably not.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hurdi, based on how the switch felt when it was going wrong, I'd say no. Seems much more like the plastic wearing out/deforming, not contacts getting fouled. The keyway wouldn't provide a clear shot for WD40 to get to the contacts, so that's another no.

POST 9Original post

If there was a way for the seat to move further back or the steering wheel to be positioned further up it would be easier. But yes when done with that repair all the blood is in your head when you get up.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If you have track pedals, some of the blood is ON your head...

POST 11Original post

It's amazing what Porsche can get away with compared to other companies like GM.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Other than the occasional fire and non-deploying airbag, GM ignition switches are just fine.

POST 13Original post

Yea, I'm always telling people the same thing. Whats the big deal over a faulty ignition switch. My Porsche has had that problem for years.

POST 14Original post

i replaced my ignition switch too and saved a few dollars by going to the local VW parts shop. Part number is the same. It's not that bad to change out. Just have a beer first, take your time, and drink a couple more after you're done.

POST 15Original post

When I had my switch replaced (see my post of a few mins ago) the dealer said that when the switch goes bad they replace the mechanical (steering lock) and electrical parts. To do that they remove they instrument pod. 2.5hrs to do the job.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 11452663

They do that to charge more cash........when only the part to replace is $18. And I think it is silly to start a related thread regarding the same thing....just sayin'
