Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check filter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Ever seen how sparkly clean the piston tops are on a car that has a blown head gasket or runs a water/meth setup?

I've considered closing off those holes but then when I change filters and clean at 5k oil changes I find crap like this.

One way we used to "Decoke" British engines, Norton, Jaguar, MG etc.., was to mist water into the carbs while running @ ~ 3k RPM using a spray bottle.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I would have posted this in
the thread where it was being discussed
but unfortunately that one has been closed. I did want to answer the point I made regarding the OEM intake not being a true cold air intake as many here maintain when criticizing aftermarket intakes for drawing air from the engine compartment.
Again I'm not trying to be contentious, I'm just tired of reading that comment and I just want to document the facts then everyone is free to make up their own mind. For the sake of completeness I'll reiterate:
Anytime an aftermarket intake is discussed the comment always comes up that because the intake tube and filter terminates in the engine compartment it is not a true CAI "like the OEM", which has an extension that draws air from the vents in the deck lid.
My contention is the OEM filter housing has holes in the bottom that allow it to draw warm air from the engine compartment so neither is it a true CAI.
Some object to this because the holes are small and only there for water drainage. The reasoning being as I understand it is the contribution to air flow is nominal and can be disregarded.
I had to replace the tensioning pulley so I removed the filter housing, took a pic, and made a few calculations.
photo(34).JPG
On the left is the intake extension and the right is the bottom of the filter housing. The opening for the extension is:
89mm x 64mm = 5696 mm sq
The holes in the filter housing are:
4.3mm dia x 358 holes = 5199 mm sq
The holes in the filter housing together are 91% the size of the opening in the extension. Disregarding the density of cold air vs warm air, the distance the air has to travel and corresponding friction, and any other pedantic minutia, the holes contribute approximately half the air the engine uses and since that air is drawn from the engine compartment just above the muffler and cat the OEM intake cannot by any stretch be considered a "true CAI".
Again I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm not defending or advocating the OEM or aftermarket intakes. I'm not questioning anyone's experience or performance figures with either. I just tired of hearing this come up in every intake thread and wanted to lay out the reality and dispel the "internet forum truth" that "aftermarket intakes are not true CAI's, like the OEM."
I hope everyone finds it interesting and informative.
I did find the conclusions and math interesting and informative.

and two more indications to support your claim.
If you check the filter after some miles, you will see the dirtiest part of the filter is the part that's right above those small holes.
The OBDII intake air temp reading is around 80F even if its 60F outside.
Plugging the holes will create a cold air intake but will restrict the inlet area. When we have the dyno up and running it would be interesting to experiment.
What is the area of the throttle body? If it's larger than the area of the airbox extension, then plugging the holes in the bottom of the box would most certainly be a bad idea.
Sucking a little bit of water into the intake can be a good thing. Ever seen how sparkly clean the piston tops are on a car that has a blown head gasket or runs a water/meth setup?
One way we used to "Decoke" British engines, Norton, Jaguar, MG etc.., was to mist water into the carbs while running @ ~ 3k RPM using a spray bottle. The copious amount of crud that came out of the tail pipe was impressive.
If you tried that today you would probably clog your cats.
Just like in Rennlist fashion, I think there are lot of splitting hairs going on. I mean why exert so much effort in something that may gain a couple HP? Have you seen various warm vs. cold air setup dyno's out there? I think you'd be surprised.
I really don't see a reason to lose sleep over it or have it consume your life in any way. If it makes you feel good, do it. If not, don't. No real reason to preach imo unless you see a dramatic difference and want to help out the community.
FWIW, I have the cold air silicone hose setup with BMC panel filter and resonator delete. Tried plugging the holes and didn't notice any dramatic difference. Also have a EvomSit Intake which could be considered a true cold air as there are only a couple 1/8" drain holes at the bottom and it gets fed the same cold air from the stock location. No real dramatic difference there either except sound. YMMV
