You'll always see changes in AFR directly effect the shape of the torque curve, and this is due to efficiency.

I see a lot of folks on here go for any combination of the two but I have yet to run into a member with all 3 upgrades of headers/exhaust/intake.

Suggestion

My motor responded well to the K&N hot air intake (now sitting in a box) IPD plenum, GT3 TB (previous owner had), headers and exhaust but others have reported running issues and fouled MAF's.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I see a lot of folks on here go for any combination of the two but I have yet to run into a member with all 3 upgrades of headers/exhaust/intake. Factoring into play the variables of HP and loss of low-end torque, etc., etc., has anyone gone so far as to "upgrade" or install all 3? I've watched a ton of videos with a combination of the two but I wonder what the 996 flat six would sound like with all 3 upgrades.

POST 2Original post

Yes I did it, if by intake your referring to plenum and throttle body. Check out my vids on youtube to here the difference or my build to see everything that was done. You Tube There is a few vids where you can here it on the road, the track or rev off with a straight piped turbo in my garage like the one above. IMO best sounding Porsche I've heard yet. Brian

POST 3Original post

Yes, many have done it. Many have had mixed results. My motor responded well to the K&N hot air intake (now sitting in a box) IPD plenum, GT3 TB (previous owner had), headers and exhaust but others have reported running issues and fouled MAF's. Sounds amazing though.

POST 4Original post

I've got the IPD competition plenum/82mm GT3 throttle body, IPD silicone intake tube and BMC filter in the stock air box, along with full Top Gear exhaust (headers/x-pipe cat & mild mufflers). I used to have the K&N CAI but switched to the BMC filter/Helmholtz mod/silicone tube due to rough idle and loss of low end torque. Miss the sound but the engine is smoother now. I also changed my MAF and O2 sensors at the same time. My 2001 C2 had approx. 80K miles at the time.

Here is a couple pulls on a Dyno with the modifications you mention: IPD Competition Plenum, GT3 TB, Kline Headers and "X" pipe, Tubi Mufflers, Evoms Stage IV tune w/5k launch control, Tarret X51 baffle, LW/FW, Sachs II Disc, RSS Mounts, RSS U/D Pulley You Tube

On my 99, I have done headers/catless x-pipes with mufflers and didnt experience the loss of low end torque. The throttle response and sound is sublime. As for the intake, I did not feel any improvements, IPD, smooth intake, BMC filter. I need to find a dyno near me!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just picked up the Agency Power headers to go with my Fabspeed Competition Air Intake and Fabspeed Muffler Bypass system. I should be getting the parts by Friday and installed this weekend. I'll keep you guys posted!

This has been posted a few times, Evolution Motorsports was a big help with part selection and tune. It has a very impressive torque band This was a cold Dynojet, if the rollers were warm the tech said +8 / +12

POST 11Original post

Its way fat in the top end... What I see over and over again when adding intake, and exhaust to these engines. Keep in mind that an engine with cats will typically test at the tailpipe with a leaner mixture than would be measured in the pre- cat, primary. I can see as much as one whole AFR point leaner post cat, than pre- cat. That means the engine was in the 11s:1 AFR range at times during this test. Adding bolt- ons makes these cars richen up the AFR values, not lean out, as people expect. I am seeing more and more engines that come in with aftermarket intakes, and exhaust that have advanced bore scoring. This makes sense, since we know that enrichment, and bore scoring go hand, in hand. Correcting AFR after adding these bolt- on components is what a tune is able to accomplish, and even if it doesn't make more power, you are still benefitting from avoiding fuel contaminated oil, and the other negatives that come with over- enrichment. This should not be taken as a blank statement for all components, and 996s. There are times when adding these items do not over- enrich the engine. The moral of the story is to pay more attention to BSFC and AFR values for the dyno than the HP curves, and especially their peak outputs. You'll always see changes in AFR directly effect the shape of the torque curve, and this is due to efficiency. Its not uncommon when I am on the dyno to turn off the HP and TQ plots. Lots of times all I care about is the AFR values, because wherever the fuel leads, net power will follow.

Thanks for pointing that out, according to my tuner at Evoms and the Dyno Technician, the AFR was the most important tool to measure the efficiency of the engine. I do understand you are not a fan of bolt on modifications,. There have been a lot of articles over the years about people bolting on induction or exhaust mods and pay no attention to their tune. Which generally results in disappointment. But I am not sure what you are saying, the tuner at Evolution Motorsports and the Dyno Technician (also tuner) thought the AFR was right where it should be for my engine. Getting the balance of fuel delivery & timing utilizing the given perimeters of valves, cam lift/duration, induction /exhaust, throughout the rpm range without running lean/rich. This is one article that covers a wide range of AFR, based on air cooled vs. water cooled, pump gas vs. race fuel and track car vs. hobbyist. Really good stats in it. I think your statement seemed to agree with his article, but not sure. http://www.masterenginetuner.com/air...ning-tips.html

POST 13Original post

Ask each of those guys what the 4 strokes of a 4 stroke engine are.. In order. Give them 3 seconds to answer. Anyway, where was the AFR sensor placed during these tests on the dyno? Do you have cats? Stock Cats? 200 cell cats? These things change everything when it comes to evaluating the data.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 16911770

The tuner asked the same question to the Dyno Tech, to evaluate the numbers. I cannot remember the exact placement. 200 Cell X pipe

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For those with base model C2 996 that added these bolt on modifications, did you follow it up with a tune?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16921996

I did, it was a remote tune for my 99. The emphasis was on throttle response around 3~5000rpm (my request for track usage). I am pleased with the results, but doubt there was significant HP improvement if any. I would still like to get a proper dyno tune, but cant find anyone in SE Michigan with the skills.

POST 17Original post

I have Dundon 4 pipe headers with customer super light weight exhaust (no cats) and 997 plenum (with 997 3.8 attached ). Results....spectacular! I need to find the the Dyno results but it was close 400 HP.
