Question: Do professional transmission rebuild shops have the ability to bench test the transmission before they send it back out to the client?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, so my 103K mile 2004 996 was due for a trans rebuild and some other work. I was busy with big projects on my older cars and a bit overwhelmed with the idea of removing, replacing the trans etc. so it went to our areas most trusted Indy. He pulled the trans and sent it to CMS after I spoke with them about doing the work and doing some research here and on other forums.
After several months I got a call the other day from the shop. Much of that time was with other projects and I was in no hurry. The trans was actually turned around fairly quickly, like 5 weeks door to door.
They were done, sort of. There was a clicking noise present at very low speeds in first gear he didn't like. It was clearly from the trans. I went out and we got some video. CMS said to pull the trans after seeing/hearing the video. My Indy seems comfortable after talking to them that they will pay for the remove/replace. Seems like they are standing behind their work. I'll just be without my car for another several weeks which is ok.
Anyone been through this with a fresh rebuild?
These things happen but to be sure, the mechanic needs to clear it with the transmission shop on who is going to cover the RR. From what I read, you mechanic sent it to the transmission shop and you are paying him for the transmission rebuild and not paying the transmission shop. If that's the case, you shouldn't be paying regardless how many times the transmission is pulled.
Correct, I subbed this out to my Indy and he coordinated with CMS. I think all will be ok. He wouldn't be moving forward if he was going to get stuck with the labor on the second R&R. He's a good guy with a great reputation in our town. I know things can happen and reputations are won and lost with how you deal with errors. After CMS saw/heard the video they didn't hesitate to say pull it and send it back.
Question: Do professional transmission rebuild shops have the ability to bench test the transmission before they send it back out to the client? Or do they just replace parts and hope for the best?
I had a transmission rebuilt once and it had to be pulled and fixed three more times afterwards and it never did seem to work 100% right. After a lot of back and forth, the transmission shop gave me my money back and never wanted to see my car again.
I wanted to update this thread in case anyone runs across it. California Motorsports stepped up and paid to have my mechanic R&R the trans, ship it back and they inspected it. The 1st gear they replaced with a new Porsche part had a small nick in it. It was down and back in short order. Re installed and after a few hundred miles it is shifting well. I'm coming up on 5 hundred miles and will be changing out the fluid as directed by Roger at CMS. My mechanic said their packaging and communication was great. My C4S is now quite refreshed with trans rebuild, new clutch, IMS, RMS and a bunch of other stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to use CMS if I ever needed again although I'll likely just be buried in this car :-)
