Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Some people like sea foam, I used CRC because my experience with their products plus when I was in new product development I tested a bunch of their stuff and they never put a bad product out there.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I can tell if I’m being paranoid or this sounds like the beginning of the end. Mufflers have been deleted. You Tube You Tube

POST 2Original post

Doesnt sound good. Its usually recommended to put phone on the ground under bank 2 and record from there. Others more knowledgeable will respond.

POST 3Original post

Sounds normal to me. Get a mechanic's stethoscope and listen and see if it's just valves and injectors you're hearing or if there's sound from the block.

POST 4Original post

Yeah not conclusive for me either. However, on second listen there seem to be a suspicious sound in video #1. I agree with Optionman place your phone on the passenger side and get a good 15-20 seconds without moving ir.

POST 5Original post

Cold start, or up to temp? Just wondering, as I'm in no position to diagnose it. One thing I've learned in 2 years of ownership: you can drive yourself crazy listening to the M96 engine.

I'm already on medication because of it ...

POST 7Original post

Not to worry Jake says its only one of 50 known 996 engine problems

POST 8Original post

Sounds pretty normal. Put some ‘ears’ on it, like TexSqurrel suggests, and pinpoint the source like Raby demonstrates in his video on how to track down the source of engine noises.

POST 10Original post

It sounds like my engine (which I have scoped just 1y ago), normal. Now we need the sound at 7k also to be sure

THAT is an apparently SUPER BAD CASE of bore scoring! Mine was not near that loud with stage 4 disease.

POST 13Original post

Mine sounds the same. Whats your oil level and what oil?

POST 14Original post

Porsche Tech 3 said that mine lokasil 1, 3.4 99, sounded like either the cats or carbon deposits. Anyway Tex Squirrel help me with this, buy CRC GDI , open boot before throttle spray while maintaining 2,000 rpm. Once you put the whole can in let it sit to soak. Can says one hour, I did 1.5 hours. Drive at least 10 minutes after that highway speed. My noise is gone. Some people like sea foam, I used CRC because my experience with their products plus when I was in new product development I tested a bunch of their stuff and they never put a bad product out there. Also the straw in the CRC product is heavier sturdier that the one in sea foam.

POST 15Original post

These cars tick........even when in fine fettle. If the sound is made throughout the rev range, both up and down, and perhaps coupled with oil consumption of blue smoke, that's more concerning. Bad: Scored bores, cracked cylinders, bad tappets, worn chains, bad oil pressure, lose valve seats, air leaks, AMS sensor faults, crankshaft bearing failure. Annoying, but not fatal: loose exhaust connections, carbon deposits, non standard exhausts, worn chain tensioners, worn fuel injectors, blocked idle bypass valves, loose spark plugs, I think it important to remember that there is quite a bit of hype involved with the shortcomings of these cars - IMS, Scoring, etc. But the percentages are low, and the most alarmist among us often have a financial interest in the failure or fear of failure of these engines.

POST 16Original post

The air conditioning compressor (blowoff valve?) makes that noise I believe.

POST 17Original post

Do you have oil analysis data over time? What do your silicon and aluminum numbers look like?

I have/had no financial interest in scoring neither am I an alarmist, but I guess I'm just a lucky one and fell into that small percentage... Is it not better to know than to worry about it needlessly? My former #6 cylinder liner.

POST 20Original post

Dont listen for strange noises. Im a much happier driver since. Turn key, drive.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was a car I was thinking about buying but decided to pass on. thanks for the opinions

True story - My father's Suburban was struck by lightning which killed all the modules. I asked him how he was still driving it. He responded, "With sunglasses". I'm like, "What?!" He laughed and said, "All the MIL lights are illuminated on the dash and so I just keep driving the darn thing.... with SUNGLASSES!" hahaha
