POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone, new to the forum and doing a lot of reading to get familiar with the 996. Like many others probably surging onto the 996 bandwagon, I find myself trying to find a 996 Turbo as my first Porsche. Seeing a lot of older buyers guides (from around 2010/2015) most of the guides are recommending "full service history" or some kind of "dealer service reference". In 2021, the cars typically being 15+ years old and through multiple owners (at least in my ~$55k price range) I have spoken with 3 local sellers, all of them seem to be flippers with under 2 years of ownership and no service history to speak of. Maybe a bit of subjective question for some of you who are more "seasoned", should I be running for the hills, or are 996's (turbo, Turbo S or X50's) becoming so common, sought after, and easily serviceable by the average Joe that I shouldn't be fazed? For example, I saw a almost 100k mi turbo S with NO available service history, but the seller had changed all fluids (front/center/rear diff, transmission etc.), shocks and clutch in his 300 miles of ownership. I'm most worried about the other 99k miles rather than the last 300 well cared miles. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

You might have to become a bit of a detective to find out some history, as I did. Carfax will list previous owners, sellers, and some maintenance records. You might have to call the dealers or service shops for info. They probably wont disclose the info, because they worry about privacy laws and such. But giving away details that are generic (such as what services were performed, notes, and other things) arent a violation. Google search the names of owners you might find through public records (mortgages, owners of companies, phone numbers, etc.) I was able to just call someone who previously owned a car I was interested in. He told me a lot of good info; tried to sell me the original car cover he still owned! Too many cars just dont have a history, so youll want to get a PPI and do your best to learn what the car needs before buying. The 996tt will have a short list of things addressed (check the 996tt sub forum stickies - things like pin or weld coolant pipes are on there).

POST 3Original post

My '03 in 2018 was purchased from a Porsche dealer. They were able to access service records from 00000 to 23000 km. Then from 42000 km to when I purchased it. Carfax showed service at an indie from 23000 to 42000. So I had some service records. During my test drive, I found a copy of the previous owners pink slip. I took a picture of it and looked up his name and number. I called him to ask about the car. Told me right away that it had a leaky RMS, besides that car ran really well. He only owned it for 18 months - traded it in on a GT3. He caught the bug lol. The history helped me make my decision, but not only factor: 1. Good PPI 2. Things like the car had a replacement Porsche battery demonstrating that the car had money spent on it. 3. Refinished rim - again pride of ownership. 4. Interior was perfect.

POST 4Original post

You can check the Porsche Club of America (PCA) classifieds. https://mart.pca.org/ Here's one that looks interesting: https://mart.pca.org/ads/51151 Cars owned by PCA members tend to be well cared for. As a fellow Long Islander, your PCA chapter would be Metro NY.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the insight and some leads! I was naively hoping that these price points and the higher performance models would attract more enthusiasts that would be sticklers for maintaining records. While I still think there is a higher "hit rate" for a set of service records, I might need to be patient to wait one out. I have to be reminded that every car and every enthusiast is different and to Mike's point, I might need to do a fair amount of sleuthing to find the right answers. I totally didn't think to check the PCA, thank you for the reminder!

I recently bought my first P car (2000 911/996 C2 with 52K) and went through BAT. 1600veloce was the dealer. It was a dumb way to buy it but I got lucky - no surprises. My car came with no service records and most dealer vehicles probably don't come with much by way of documentation. While I am very happy with the dealer and the car, if I had it to do over again I would have an invasive PPI done. You are buying at a market high in terms of overall pricing so it is more important to be certain that you are not buying a pig in a poke. Once you own it you own all the problems. You will read on these forums that it's not the purchase price that's the issue it's the ongoing maintenance of these cars. Some report spending $2K+ a year - every year on routine maintenance (at an Indy).

POST 7Original post

I recently went through this exact dilemma, buying my first 996. I had narrowed it down to a 2004 c4s cab, 60k miles and 0 service history and a 2001 C4 cab 65k miles with every single piece of work done documented and with receipts for the past 17 years..... I talked to 5 or 6 independent porsche mechanics. Every single one, and I mean EVERY single one said to run from car 1 without knowing the history. One place that was pretty reputable down there by you refused to do the PPI for me b/c the service history was missing... no one wanted to touch it. I really wanted that car.... It could have been a great car.. .I don't know... I won't ever know... but I have to imagine that many shops saying run meant that they had seen this movie before.... and likely know how it ends.

What an interesting point about the porsche battery, I never really thought about it, but I think its true. I think this is what I'm trying to put my finger on - Pride of ownership. Totally subjective, but was really hoping for a higher degree of it from the sellers I've encountered. Maybe my expectations are too high here.

^^THIS^^ True story It took a long time before I pulled the trigger on my Carrera Aero. One of the follies: Probably 8 years ago 2003 Yellow C2 Cabriolet. Around 45,000 miles. Had an aftermarket front and rear bumper. Looked ok. Had a zillion pieces of interior painted in speed yellow. Looked like an advertisement for Bumper Plugs. Nice options including deviated stitching and yellow belts. It was at a Ford Dealership in state of Washington. I am in Upstate New York. Clean carfax. No service on carfax. I told salesman, I needed to do a PPI, since there were no service records, no Driver's Manual, no window sticker, nothing, add to that only one key. (ALL THE SIGNS TO WALK) They sent it to a Porsche Dealership that was around 50 miles away from Ford Dealership. Not sure who drove it to and from PPI. Before I even had a chance to call the Porsche Dealership for update. The salesman called from Ford Dealership and said my deposit was refunded and the car was no longer for sale. Porsche Dealership charged the full $325 for PPI. Found several small things wrong including wait for it.......imminent engine problems. Recommendation, do not proceed with purchase. On the way back from PPI.....yup, IMSB let loose. There was no way I was ever going to buy any car without service history, PERIOD

POST 11Original post

Really depends on the seller / person trading in the car, more so than the dealer. When I got mine from a used lot in KY the main thing I asked before going to test drive / purchase was if they had documentation. It was provided and from both previous owners. Had they not, wouldn't have made the 700 mile trip.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17510453

This is an incredible story. What a dodged bullet. I wonder who ends up holding the bag on a car like this. I assume they might just go to auction, steep discount and an "AS IS" statement thicker than the bible.

POST 13Original post

From what I have seen with mine, the carfax is helpful, though not not very detailed. It has accidents, but doesn't describe much. Then again, I rolled the dice with low miles and some of the service items became more apparent as I worked on the car. Water pump for instance. I could see it was replaced at some point. These decisions may be influenced by how much mechanical skill you have and maybe a gut feeling when you look at what documentation you have presented to you. Long distance PPI without knowing who is looking at it and how deep your pockets are, as well as patience influences this. So far, I've been lucky with my instincts.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 17510581, 17510697

I think I'm starting to get the picture. I'll need the records or roll the dice with a thorough PPI, although I don't think a PPI will catch everything - I was planning on having TKX Performance (Huntington, NY) perform my PPI. Haven't spoken with them yet, but used them a few times in the past few years. Not sure if folks here would be familiar or could give any guidance here. I am usually willing to roll the dice on a platform I'm familiar with (BMW N54, MB and many years with misc. Honda daily drivers) and would be willing to roll the dice here if it was less money at risk, or if there was some CPO safety blanket. The 996 Turbo's are only inflating in price (I'd argue this might be the worst time to buy one) and I'm tempted to wait out the summer, but I don't see the pent-up consumer spending receding. I admit that I might be part of the new crowd where the price to performance is finally within attainable range - I'm just thankful you guys have been so friendly with your guidance.

POST 15Original post

I'm in construction and inflation is nuts. Search for what meets your criteria for color and options, and then decide whether the current price is worth it. I found mine at a Ford dealer on Autotrader. So far it has worked out. I do most of my own work, less inspections and alignments.

POST 16Original post

If you're searching out a 996 Turbo - you essentially don't have to worry about all of the potential NA 996 engine issues that absolutely require an in-depth PPI . There are really only three things that are potential problems on the 996 Turbo. 1. Coolant lines, there are 8 fittings that are glued in place and can possibly come unglued. It's rare and follows no real pattern. The solution is to either pin or weld the fittings in place. Having this done is a very big plus. 2. Second gear popout, the 2001-2002 cars may have an issue with popping out of 2nd gear on overrun (hard acceleration followed by coasting under engine braking). This was fixed for 2003 by altering the shim spec of the gear stack. If it starts to pop out it will only get worse and the only solution is to rebuild the transmission. 3. The hydraulic spoiler breaks all the time and leaks pentosin all over the engine compartment. Rennkit offers an electric conversion. Other than those 3 things the rest of it is normal wear for a 15-20 year old car. Is the suspension tight or does it clunk? Does it boost up to 0.7-0.8 bar? Is the interior in good condition? CV joint boots in good shape? Clutch works well? If you have specific questions you might also post in the 996 Turbo forum --> https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum-61/

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17511764

Thank you so much for this! I am still in the beginning of my quest and I'm glad I found many mentions of the same problems. All things considered for an older sports car, these problems seem super manageable (outlier being the water hoses). Maybe I am desensitized because of the BMW platforms. Constant problems with coil packs, injectors and fuel pumps. I may post some more turbo specific problems on the other forum, thank you for the suggestion! Seeking more generic opinion, I found a Turbo S local to me. I am reluctant because it is a cabriolet with almost 100k miles, but saw that the original CA owners had it in at the Beverly Hills Porsche 2-3x a year for all service for the first 10 years up through 92k miles! Unfortunately the Beverly Hills dealer's reputation for being unhelpful precedes it, so I will be unlikely to receive service details (including the 15k, 30k, 60k but nothing after 75k service), the carfax showing such frequent visits gives me some comfort, but the mileage and being a cabriolet gives me some pause. Does anyone know this car? https://webcache.googleusercontent.c...&ct=clnk&gl=us

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 17512266

I wouldn't shy from a well maintained 100k mile turbo, the only thing that may be a better question for the turbo forum is the lifespan of the turbo's associated components themselves. Plenty of N/A's that have over 200k miles (some over 300k as well) with routine maintenance, I would assume the same for turbo's, but they may require more some added attention as miles gain. Did you ask if they have the service documents from all those years? Someone that meticulous with routine maintenance may have kept the records with the car.

POST 19Original post

Good thread! Pride of ownership - love the phrase, never thought of it but I know I've been noticing the little details all along that lead up to "Pride of ownership".

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17512282

I asked but the current owner said they do not have the service history and was only able to come up with the carfax listing the service recorded at Beverly Hills. I agree that the frequent visits indicate great care from the first owner at an overpriced dealer up through and only saw less frequent (but still logged) service for the last ~10k miles. Separately, I am also starting to look at other recent Turbo S sales and notice that even as of December, cars with 1/3 the mileage were selling at $55k from BaT. I'm sure there can be some room for movement, but I am only continuing to find the obvious - it is likely a bad time and market to buy (Covid price plus summer price). If this was the coupe, I'd be all over it but I know coupes always sell at 20% higher for the Turbo S.
