Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I only broke one tab and it was the only one that I had gripped right next to the bend.
Leading evidence: 'only one' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only one' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Lubricate injector o-rings' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I also used DC111 Molykote lube to lubricate the injector o-rings.

For some closure, I ended up using needle nose pliers to bend the locking tabs from 90 degrees further out to about 120 degrees.

I have no problem replacing my 2000 Boxster S injectors with 2002 injecters for my 3.6 litre builds.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im replacing the original injectors in my 99 with the 996.2 style. The white one in the photo is my first attempt at modification and Ive noticed that the plastic square **** no longer sits in between the lower prongs of the metal clip. If I make the new slot any lower on the injector then I dont think it will properly fit and be retained in the fuel rail.
Thoughts?
I'm guessing the hook at the bottom so to speak is there to keep the injector from rotating? Might be enough length to bend it at a 45 deg angle to engage the tab?
Im not sure but I suspect not. The part number for the clips in the 996 PET are listed as the same across all years, 1999-2005. The two different injectors are separately listed for 1999-2000 and 2001-2005.
For some closure, I ended up using needle nose pliers to bend the locking tabs from 90 degrees further out to about 120 degrees. This was enough to get them to engage the square **** on each injector. I recommend that anyone doing this do so by gripping the tab with the pliers at the end of the tab (furthest away from the bend/joint). This seems to help ensure that the tabs won't break. I only broke one tab and it was the only one that I had gripped right next to the bend.
I also used DC111 Molykote lube to lubricate the injector o-rings. This stuff is super slick and supposedly keeps the rubber nice and soft throughout it's lifetime. The DC111 made everything slide together really easily and a little goes a long way.
Also, zip ties are your friends with this project. I used lots of them to hold the fuel rails up and away from the engine so that I could properly install the new injectors. Thank god I have skinny arms and small hands.
I haven't done my injectors yet but I was trying to be prepared and bought all new clips since they were only 70 cents each. What's weird is that the dealer sites I normally use said "this part does not fit your 1999 Porsche 911". This was for clip #996.110.113.53. I found plenty of sites that listed the clip as fitting a wide range of engines/models from 1997 to 2008. It seems to fit exactly like it's supposed to and looks like the ones that are on the car now and the ones in your pics except for no zinc plating.
Could someone educate me why moving to later 996 injectors would be beneficial?
Seems cool and need to know if I should do this one my 99.
I can start a different thread if preferred.
There have been various recommendations on here about updating to the later style injectors. The most descriptive recommendation that Ive seen is here:

Whenever I'm at the beer store, I grab a can or bottle of something I know nothing about just to try something new. The name cracked me up, so of course I had to try it.
As far as availability, I've only seen it once and it's brewed right here in San Diego so I'm guessing it will be tough to find anywhere near you.
