Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive been searching and all I can find for the 3.6 is the Porsche own 500$ main bearings they are the simplest little bearings and about the most expensive I have ever seen. Do any of the bearing companies sell an alternative?

POST 2Original post

They may appear very simple but the metallurgy and heat treating or hardening processes may be quite complex. As someone who has built engines, the last place I’d want to save money would be on main bearings or con rods etc. They are very expensive, agreed, but that may be the cost of entry in this case. You could check with the guys at EBS and see if they have any recommendations.

thanks Ill check with EBS yeah Ive been building engines for years, you can get a set of LS bearings main and rods for a 100$. The early 996 bearings are more complicated and half the price. Seems like there is just no competition from bearing companies like clevite etc.. for the 996/997

what brand for the 996/997 3.6 main bearings have you used? it just seems these are at least double the price of other bearings for other years. its about the most expensive simple bearing half Ive seen at about 500$ for the mains.
