Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Yes you are correct in that the starter gear moves to engage with the action of the ignition switch. If you have not done so,please use new flywheel bolts and tighten them to the correct torque.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any tips how best to align the starter splines and the centering pins before attempting to install the DMF? My old dad arms are becoming wet noodles.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok. So Im thinking the starter splines do not come into contact with the flywheel until the starter motor is engaged. The flywheel is on and fitted to the centering stud on the main shaft. Pretty sure Im over thinking this. Can anyone confirm the starter splines extend out to engage the flywheel when ignition is engaged? If so, I learned something new! And thanks for not calling me an idiot. Im already well aware.

Yes thats correct, the bendix gear is flung out via centrifugal force when the starter is engaged and is retracted via spring force when the starter is disengaged and slows down (in which the degrading centrifugal force can no longer overcome the retraction pressure from the spring).

Thank you!

POST 5Original post

No need to worry about the starter in relation to the D.M.F. Yes you are correct in that the starter gear moves to engage with the action of the ignition switch. If you have not done so,please use new flywheel bolts and tighten them to the correct torque. Enjoy the day and the journey..
