I then take a buffer block to the car or clay whichever your preference, again lately I have used the buffer block more.

Re: wax, I use collinite 845, but I've only used it once and have nothing to compare it to.

Lake country 5" pads I used the orange and white pads depending on the paint condition.

I have been using the 5 pads on most of my car so far, I do need to purchase some of the 3 ones to do smaller areas so if you are ordering make a note you will need at least 1 set of 3 pads (Orange + White)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Here is a shot of my roof before and after polishing.
I'm not sure if my iPhone camera is good enough but all the swirls and webs are gone.
Think I might have to get back into doing the odd car I miss detailing.

*******UPDATE*****
Here is a short how to I have written to go with this thread.
Porsche 996 Paint Correction
After experimenting with my own car I am confident that these steps will help others greatly reduce most common paint defects found in their daily drivers paint.
I purchased my car with the full intent to completely polish it and do as much repair on the finish as I could. The car I purchased was not well detailed and had a lot of paint marring, spider webs, and swirls that looked awful in the sun.
The process does require a fair amount of time, one should not be in any sort of a rush however the job can be completed over multiple days or even weeks as time permits. It is important to remember that after each panel / section is polished a fresh coat of wax must be applied to protect the newly polished paint.
In the case of waxes they are like oils, mufflers, air filters etc everyone has a preference in my case I tend to lean on the Zaino Z5 Pro as it does fill a little and it lasts a long time in my own testing.
First you are going to want to wash the car I dont do anything fancy here and I do not use the double bucket method or anything else if you plan to polish the whole car at once use a stripping soap like Dawn or Sunlight. Otherwise just wash with normal carwash soap and dry.
I then take a buffer block to the car or clay whichever your preference, again lately I have used the buffer block more. Do the section you plan to polish or again if polishing the whole car do the whole car. Again keeping in mind that clay / buffer blocks remove the wax if you do this step and do not wax your paint is left unprotected.
After you have a clean surface to work with its time to begin correcting. My tools of choice here are the Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action polisher, Lake Country Orange polishing pads, and Menzurna Super Intensive polish.
The 7424 can be found here

The pads here

The process is relatively simple attach your pad to the hook and loop backer plate on the polisher. Spread an X shaped bead of polish on the pad and begin to spread it around. The video below does an excellent job of showing you how to apply the polish to the pad as well as the time and speed you should be taking to polish out the section.
Mike Phillips demonstrates the proper techniques on using the Porter Cable 7424XP - YouTube
The above video basically give you everything you need as far as how to apply the polish to the paint. After you have worked the area approx. 2 over lapping passes side to side and two up and down stop the polisher and buff the area clean with a microfiber cloth. A 50/50 alcohol / water solution helps to clean the area.
Once you are satisfied with the results you have two options use a finer pad and finer polish which I recommend the Lake Country White pads and Menzurna Super Finish or proceed to waxing. If you are looking for ultimate shin / gloss you will need to complete a second polishing with the above mentioned product in the same manner the video describers.
After you have corrected the paint to a level you are satisfied with proceed to wax your car as you normally would. Keeping in mind that not every defect can or will be polished out and you do have to know when to draw the line regarding cutting.
What was your process?
Some idiot (maybe me) used a towel with something on it to dry off my car and now there's little scratches everywhere. I tried using a porter cable orbital polisher with a orange lake city pad and 3m rubbing compound, followed by a black pad with some sort of polish, then a cleaner wax. It looks great and got out about 50% of the scratches but I have no idea how to get the rest out. I'm guessing I need to wet sand it with some 1000 grit first next time.
No need to wet sand. Porsche clear coat is stupid thin and you will regret taking that much off. Your PC with the right pad and polish combo will do the trick. It's a marathon not a sprint. OP, great job. Porsche black can be a bit finicky at times. It looks awesome!
Porter 7424 Machine with a lake country orange pad. Menzurna super intensive polish. I do my car in 2x2 sections roughly. I wasn't sure how this car would turn out I really beat the seller down on the price based on the paint. To be honest it was like a 5 or 6 out of 10. I would say I have restored it to a 9 to 9.5 /10 now. My wife even noticed the difference which is rare for her.
The picture is before using any wax or filler.
I was going to ask if you guys were wanting a DIY for paint correction but there are many many variables at play. I would hate to steer guys in a direction where they could get unfavorable results. The DA polisher is basically trouble free but there are always exceptions.
I will prepare some notes and try to take some more pictures but I have most of my car polished now. The paint is looked absolutely new in the direct sunlight which is always tough. Other than blemishes which are deeper and would take too much cutting to be worth while its darn near perfect.
I will have to take some pics of the hood as it cannot be corrected and I am going to have it wrapped until I can get it painted. The front bumper needs some work so I'll try to start there for a DIY.
Jamie thanks for the info. re: menzerna super intensive, pad, and da.
Re: wax, I use collinite 845, but I've only used it once and have nothing to compare it to. I'm getting ready to do it again.
I've tried many. Honestly gimmicky I know but Zaino seems to outlast them all. I don't have enough testing on blackfire to say. If I were wax shopping Z5 would be all I would buy. Get some quick detail spray to go with it and enjoy.
OP: Nice!
There's a guy who owns AMMO NYC named Larry. He seems fanatical about his work and has some pretty interesting detailing videos on YouTube under the headings Ammonyc, Drive Clean and /Drive. You guys will probably enjoy the car he bought for himself a while back, too! I'm unaffiliated with him.
Nice work! It's great seeing others that enjoy something I have such a deep passion for.
I have been detailing for over 10 years and this spring started my own side business. I recently completed a 2 step correction on a 997 GT3 a friend of mine owns. Here are a couple shots...
Very nice and the Menzurna in the background
I would like to get into doing some cars for others as well maybe 1 a week or something to fill my spare time.
I wish I had some spare time these days! Between working 40-50 hours a week at my full time job, I typically have cars booked for details on my days off so I am normally working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week.
I use the following for paint correction.
Old porter cable da polisher (although if youre buying new there are much better da polishers on the market today).
Menzerna 1500 and 4000
Lake country 5" pads I used the orange and white pads depending on the paint condition.
Carpro cq quatz this will coat the car for 1-2 years and build up the clear coat.
Car pro dlux for the plastic trim
Carpro perl for the tires
Carpro reload after a wash.
I have a midnight blue tt and even my mother in law commented how good it looked for a 12 year old car. The first time I worked on this car it took two weeks to clean it up (this probably also included a deep clean on the interior). Menzerna is a great compound, but you need to tape off the rubber as it will cake up and get trapped inbetween some trim.
