Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The tech separated the enclosure and showed me the small circuit board, then fitted it back in the enclosure and snapped (?) it together before he fitted the new mirror to the mount.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This little PCB is hanging from behind the rearview mirror (Car is 2003 996TT). It has an amber light and a push switch. Have no clue what it does. Can anyone help to determine its purpose. Many thanks

POST 2Original post

I believe it is the circuit and button that allows you to select between two levels of comfort lighting brightness. This is the comfort light (LED I think) that shines down on the center stack of the dash.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

dash. Many thanks. It seems weird that it just hangs there so unfinished. But that explains the button!

POST 4Original post

It should be integrated into the cabin lights by the rearview mirror. There's a little pinhole in the light cover that you can use with a paperclip or something similar to access the button.

POST 5Original post

What Dennis C said. The tech separated the enclosure and showed me the small circuit board, then fitted it back in the enclosure and snapped (?) it together before he fitted the new mirror to the mount. Sort of reads like someone's been at the mirror who doesn't know what he's doing. Has the windshield been replaced?

POST 6Original post

Could be that some ham-fisted DIYer pulled power off of it for something...radar detector, maybe? Otherwise, I can't understand why it would be left dangling from the mirror. That's pretty ghetto.

POST 7Original post

Standard issue, Mk II NSA listening device. Choose your words wisely. Think twice about singing along to Van Halen's "Panama."

NSA listening devise or passenger seat ejection button. Get a non-friend to ride with you, speak some Russian code names, and push the button. Post what happens.
