I actually prefer it to be installed backwards to be honest angled towards driver but regardless of how you install it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car currently has the B&M short shift kit and its a giant pile of crap. I generally prefer a larger throw on my street cars so I am wanting to go back to stock. I know the short shift kit ruins the factory part so it looks like I am going to have to get an entire assembly. Does, anyone know if the factory 996 N/A shifters will fit and how about the regular 997 shifters? Seems like the most economical option. My car is a 2001 996TT

POST 2Original post

All of the 996 and 997 shifters will fit in either generation of car. The 997 shifter is an improved design and (apparently) will improve the shifter feel when installed in a 996. The 997 OE short shifter is a common upgrade for 996 cars. In mine I upgraded to Numeric's aftermarket shifter but it costs more than the OE 997 options. Still worth it in my opinion though. You should be able to easily find used stock 996 shifters on ebay or on rennlist. I still have mine sitting on a shelf in my garage for example.

POST 3Original post

Just to clarify, you'll need the whole shifter assembly. These appear often on eBay for under $100 easily.

POST 4Original post

Maybe it's not the shifter that sucks but rather the ball end cups at the end of the cables that attach to the shifter. My wife and I totally love the 997 B&M short shifter in our 996 C4

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I should clear things up the car shifts "fine" or the same as every other 996TT I have driven with this shifter. I actually prefer it to be installed backwards to be honest angled towards driver but regardless of how you install it. The shifter is just to short and I feel the gates are poorly defined. I also do not care for the increased shifter effort required. I in general do not like short shift kits of any brand/make for this reason. I did order a 997 factory shifter which should be here next week along with a few other tweaks on the car it should be doing good! Thanks for the info that all are the same shifter assemblies. -Your Pal Fishey
