Just changed my oil and filter with a Napa 1042, and the box read “see contents of package for country of origin”

As soon as the filters changed, we immediately started testing them.

Suggestion
Just to confirm - when doing an oil change with the LN spin on filter - the filter should be pre-filled correct?

Suggestion
Great - thought so as I remember reading if you dont pre-fill there is a moment when the engine would be starved of oil until it starts flowing through the filter/circuit.

I started building a flow bench to test the K&N filters, after lots of customers had issues with them(no oil pressure after an oil change, and /or low oil pressure also after changing the oil.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I did an oil change yesterday and Ill make a separate thread on it after my UOA comes back. I did have one unexpected observation regarding the Napa gold filter, specifically the country of origin. My last filter was labeled made in USA, my new one says made in Venezuela!
Im not a guy that normally cares about COO, but this really surprised me because Ive never heard anything positive about the economic conditions, business climate, or living conditions there. Also, I know the USA has at least a partial trade embargo in place. Apparently Mann and Hummel saw a positive business case for moving production there.
Hopefully they have maintained consistent production and quality controls in this location.

Old filter:
Good catch, I once worked for NAPA & they do not make oil filters. Wix used to make NAPA's oil filters & we were taught the superiority of Wix filters.
I wonder what has changed.
I would trust Mann/Hummel to keep their quality control, even in Venezuela although their economy has tanked. They are an OEM supplier for Porsche and have a good reputation to defend.
So anyone know if Wix and Napa are no longer affiliated? Wix has always been my go to version of this filter. I'll look at my oil filters when I get home to see if there are any notable markings.

-- Where did you purchase your 1042 filter? All of the NAPA Gold 1042's on our shelves and our local NAPA dealer all still are made in the USA.
As long as we keep getting the USA NAPA filters - we will still sell and recommend them. If they did in fact switch production to Venezuela, then we will reassess our recommendations.
And it looks like Mann retained the CEO of Wix to keep running the show on the Wix end. Hopefully the quality will stay the same.
I ordered three from Amazon in 2017 and they are all U.S. made. One interesting thing is that I ordered them on 3/29/17 and the manufacturing date stamp on the filters is 3/12/17.
That short of a turnaround from factory to retailer might indicate high demand so maybe they started making them at the Venezuela plant to keep up.
I can't get Napa gold 1042 filters down here in the land of OZ so I purchase directly from WIX here (part number 51042). I bought a whole bunch in bulk last year so i'll have a look where they are made.
This thread inspired me to pick up a Wix 51042 and just for the hell of it, a Wix 51042XP for comparison to the Napa Gold 1042. The two Wix filters were just purchased and like my Napa Gold, were hechoed in the U.S. All three filters are externally identical looking in every way. I assume they're made on the same line and just get a different sticker depending on what retailer they're going to. The Wix XP looked visually identical externally but the videos show a different membrane material and some other differences.
The 51042 'XP' described on the Wix website:
"Engineered to withstand the toughest of driving conditions and scientifically designed to maximize the performance of synthetic motor oils, it provides optimum protection for the increased demands on todays vehicles. Heavy loads, towing, high-idling city driving and harsh driving conditions are no match for the enhanced durability of XP."
I would be curious to Know Charles' thoughts on the XP version. Better? Worse? Just a gimmick?

So it appears maybe I have a unicorn! I also posted this discovery on BITOG, and between the two sites and nearly 3000 views, nobody else has seen a filter made in Venezuela. Maybe others will become more common in the near future, but for now I have the only one.
I should put it on BAT and sell to the highest bidder.
WIX does have a manufacturing plant in Venezuela. I do not know what their supply chain is like, but it wouldn’t be rare for companies to ship products from different manufacture plants depending on demand.
It could also be the supplier you got this from purchased some lot that was not meant for the US, I think I read above you did not purchased this from NAPA directly.
I forgot to mention in my original post that the filter didnt come in a typical Napa box, but instead came shrink wrapped. In my email to them, I asked about the COO and also about the packaging. I received an email back almost immediately, here is their statement:
Yes, although I would say around %90 of Napa's filters are made in the US ever since Mann + Hummel bought out there filter division a year ago some of the filters now (mostly air filters) but some oil filters are imported. They also still make those 1042's in the US but it just depends on which batch I get when I order them. The reason there was no Napa box with your order is because it is more cost efficient on my end when shipping some products to Amazon. The imported filters are made with the same specs as the ones in the US. Side note: you're the first person to ask about that and im surprised it has not happened more often.
Still curious to me that nobody else has seen this COO.
We're willing to spent more than $10 on an oil filter. Sorry - couldn't help myself. And since we're

friends...
Actually, the reply was professional. I agree, it's odd this has not become known. I wonder how many he goes through and the end application. These might be the standard filter for a tractor engine, as well. If only there was a place one could go, to "ask a question" and get multiple possible answers.
I think next time I’ll just go to the local Napa store, there’s one about 5 miles from me. I ordered this one from Amazon just because it was part of a larger order of miscellaneous stuff. (And free shipping). Yes, I’m a cheap ***.
We will continue to monitor the situation, but I agree that a Venezuelan filter is not a viable option. We were able to buy one from the same source as the OP and it does look well made on the inside, however it is slightly different.
We're also looking into other specialty US makers of filters and will share our findings when we've compiled them all.
As soon as the filters changed, we immediately started testing them. There are physical differences, but we have yet to derive what changes have been made to the flow and filtration qualities.
I started building a flow bench to test the K&N filters, after lots of customers had issues with them(no oil pressure after an oil change, and /or low oil pressure also after changing the oil. With these changes of the Wix, my focus quickly changed.
Other than the fact that I don't want a filter made in Venezuela, it was actually very well made. The only real difference is the USA one had 50 pleats and the import was 66 pleats and the metal backer for the element has round holes in the US made one where the import looks more like a cheese grater.
Here are some pictures:
USA is on the left.
USA is on the left.
FSI installed this one late last year with the IMS Solution (thus the different part number). Made in USA. I'm too lazy to crawl under and look at the new one, plus it has a FilterMag on it. I got that one from LN, so I'm figuring based on what Charles said it is likely made in USA.
And as far as I'm concerned, even if it WERE identical, my vote would be to buy nothing from Venezuela, but that's a discussion for another forum...
There isn't a Napa in our town , I've been using the Bosch 3332 filters ( made in the USA) . I got a case of them 40% off at lordco , how do these stack up to the Napa ?
Just to confirm - when doing an oil change with the LN spin on filter - the filter should be pre-filled correct?
I have found that around 8L of oil including the filter fill will be right in the middle of the indicator. Initially I put in 9L but its too much - so I haven't started the car and will remove 1L.
Great - thought so as I remember reading if you dont pre-fill there is a moment when the engine would be starved of oil until it starts flowing through the filter/circuit.
Just changed my oil and filter with a Napa 1042, and the box read “see contents of package for country of origin”
fortunately it was made in the good ole USA
For the record, we haven't seen anything but a US made 1042 at our shop, but we buy them from trusted sources. I have cut them apart and have not found any changes to the Wix / Napa Gold filter currently being sold that would warrant changing my recommendation on using them.
main concern is if the oil flow is adequate. These filters are rated 9 to 11 gpm but that cheese grater design got me a bit worried. Eyeballing it i think it probably hampers oil flow a little dont you think? Thats my only real issue with the import. If in your expert opinion thats not an issue, id pretth much he at peace which im not at the moment
I think what charles is saying is they have only been able to get the US made ones and nothing in them is a cause for concern. I would not take this as an endorsment of the imported filter as they havent tested them first hand.
None of this is new "news". This change happened over a year ago, and immediately we tested, and cut open filters to compare the differences.
I have not seen any differences in filtration, UOA, or oil pressure with the Venezuelan filters. I continue to ONLY use Napa Gold with my engines.
