POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have any experience with a SPE button problem? I can't select the quiet mode . The only way I can is before start up hold the switch button and turn the ignition on. This gives me the light in in the switch and it will be in quiet mode when the car is started. That is the way it stays till the next start up. To me it sounds like a switch problem, all vacuum connections are good and vacuum switch appears to be good. Thanks

POST 2Original post

I wish I had that problem damn you quiet mode from 30-45.

POST 4Original post

hi, mine starts in sport mode. when i need to be quiet in the morning i turn the key on, then press the pse button, while the oil check samples, then start her up and its quiet. after i am off the street i press the button again for regular sound. not sure if this helps?

POST 5Original post

There is a relay in the system and it sounds like that may be the problem. Snap slap, you know that if you disconnect the lead to the speedometer then you will not have the quiet mode between 30 and 45. On my car I never connected this lead when I installed my PSE.

That's what that is! I have been growing increasingly suspicious when my car was noticeably muted in 2nd gear. This forum is just a gold mine of information. I think I am interested in disconnecting that speedo relay. 2nd is my favorite power band and I am missing out on that glorious exhaust note!

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 9411195

I did this mod within 2 weeks of owning mine My wife thought I had lost my mind, opening up that relay to pull out the resistor, lol. So much better now.

POST 10Original post

Uhhh, little help here! I just thought it was "the way it is", with regard to the quietness in 2nd. What is this relay disconnect thingamajiggie you speak of? How can I get that awesome sound all the time? I LOVE the sound my PSE has when it's growling.

POST 11Original post

What is the old saying, if you can't find it here you can't find it anywhere! A little light reading on this subject. http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...ools-required/ http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic..._fromsearch__1

POST 14Original post

I put a little micro switch between the speedo signal and the relay.... with a flick of the switch, you can have the speedo option or not.

POST 15Original post

I like redridge's idea. May have to go back in and install the wire with a switch.

POST 16Original post

Excellent information ... I LOVE this forum! I'm going to have to do this mod in the next couple weeks. I was reading through the post (and links) wondering why the PSE would be turned off through a specific speed range. Am I correct in reading that it is because of the noise restrictions in parts of Europe? If I want it ON it should be ON! This also explains why I haven't really been able to tell a difference when testing the switch as I've generally been trying in 2nd gear ... I see the light! Cheers!

POST 17Original post

I did this mod tonight. Took ten minutes. What an incredible difference. PSE mute button still works. I came up with about 15 errands so I could appreciate the change, over and over, and over...

POST 18Original post

OMG! I was SO PISSED that it was quiet... like wtf!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?! can someone PLEASE tell me step by step how to do the speedo mod? and i am asking step by step cause i know NOTHING, and i mean NOTHING about cars. I have no idea what an alternator is, where a radiator is, NOTHING!. please dont laugh haha, all my time and energy were put into medicine + women, so i can diagnose you and tell you were the "g spot" is but ask me where the radiator is, and i'm like uhhhhhhhh.... the only thing i know how to do is take off and put back on the battery. edit: pretty pretty pretty PLEASE tell me i would love to hear it in every gear and rpm ... and feel free to shoot some medical questions to my PM box if you'd like haha

hi i own a 996c4 cab since new with 90kmls and she has a lot of equipment, including pse. i just unplug the brown conector in the right side of the motor, and it seems to me that it is always open. is there any down side on doing just this? my vin number is WP0ZZZ99Z2S644221 if some expert can give me a tip i would appreciate thanks

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 13342074

No downsides in just unplugging connector if you want it loud all the time. Edit: There could be a downside if you're living in a corrosion area and do not actually actuate the valves from time to time. This could seize them and render it useless down the line. I would periodically lube and actuate the valves. The vacuum solenoid however should be more durable as it's not exposed to outside elements.

POST 29Original post

I have just taken ownership of a friends 03 C4 with PSE. It has tons of miles (223k) and along with rattling, the PSE cannot be switched back and forth. It starts in sport mode, if I switch to quite it will not switch back. Has anyone come across this? I like the idea of opening up the cans to fix the baffles... Is this really a workable fix and realitively cheap?

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 13421021

3 thing , vaccum leak, defective relay or actuator seized. actuator are easy to change, you can order it from Porsche. Best thing to verify is remove bumper and veiify If the actuator move when you push the rod, you can try to move it with bumper on car not as easy but be sure car was cold. Vaccum can be verify by disconnecting steinless steel vaccum hose from engine bay. (Near oxygen sensor harness, air filter box). If you can switch once and after nothing verify vaccum first. You probably have leak or a defective vaccum reservoir. I didn't remember where are the small reservoir.

POST 33Original post

Bump for this thread. This is a must mod for factory PSE cars. Worked like a charm on my C4S. Having the beautiful sport exhaust mute at 30 mph is like some sadistic hitting mute on your favorite song. This stupid Euro noise restriction should never be on any NA cars but it is. Just did a 5 minute mod by snipping the one side of the red diode and bending it up and that was all it too. No fault codes, my quiet button on the dash works as designed but no more 30-40mph sport exhaust muting. Funny thing is, in the states you want your exhaust to sound nice at 30 mph, that's where most of your cruising is done with your windows down when you can hear it. C4s%20Fat%20rear%20low%20net.jpg

POST 34Original post

Is this 30 to 40 mph muting thing just for the C4S? I don't have any such muting on my C2.

Hi guys. I've been wanting to upgrade to a pse. I have a 2000 996c2. I found one coming off of a 2015 Carrera S. 991. Just have a few questions. Is it a direct swap? Are there any modifications that have to be made? How much should I pay to have it installed? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

POST 39Original post

I could be wrong, but I doubt that a 991 exhaust will fit a 996. I'd be sure to check it out before buying it.

Thanks for this! I want to install the button on my dash for an aftermarket system. This could help with the install greatly, especially the part numbers...

POST 42Original post

Hello All, Slid under my dash right above the fuse box panel. Found the relay area and the "asskklagganenngben" relay, wiggled it out and grabbed my precision screwdriver set. Upon further review of the black relay box, it looks as though someone mess around with the pry areas. Finally got the cover to pop open, thus exposing the diodes and motherboard. The "red" diode Pin 1 was already cut for me! I figure the previous owner stumbled upon this hack and saved me some time. Score!!! I am now wondering what other goodies or gremlins previous owner left for me to discover. My PSE button does not light up, so there is always the sound of the PSE in every RPM band. Thanks everybody.

POST 43Original post

Hi I have a 06/2002 996 c4 cab, manual, that I ordered new loaded, including pse. Mine has not the dash button, is it possible to install it? Regards

POST 45Original post

Bringing an old thread back. Did 996.1 carreras have the option for a sport exhaust? If so did it still have the nested quad tip look?

POST 46Original post

Just did the PSE install on my loaded 2002 996 C2 Cabriolet. I ordered the parts from Suncoast and had the work done by Bodymotion in Ocean Township NJ. Happy with everything about it. The only down side was that I had no extra switch space on my dash so they had to disconnect my rear window defogger switch to add ib the PSE switch. Didn't have time right now to leave the car to have them come up with an alternative. Since the car doesn't get driven in winter this is a minor inconvenience. I'll worry about that next service.

POST 47Original post

Quotes source post: 20147204

Is there space on the batwing for a switch?

POST 48Original post

No the batwing was full so they had to remove the defogger switch. My car has heated seats and PSM. Along with the Master Locking Switch and the switch to operate the convertible top I was out of space there. I thought I might have an option with that blank over next to the ignition switch but they said that was a no-go. They will figure out something. I’d be open to any suggestions anyone has to offer. Ideas?
