I have an opportunity to buy one real cheap, good running car but I never liked the 996 styling all that much.

But I know the car and this is a nice running car and it is shame if it goes to the insurance co.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was thinking back to the good old 911. I know the doors are different and the car is bigger but I thought maybe someone has done it before. I have an opportunity to buy one real cheap, good running car but I never liked the 996 styling all that much.
Anything is possible if you want to spend enough money. It would be cheaper in the long run to buy the car you want instead of trying to transform a 996 into something it isn't.
Do you know what the cost would be to to the 997 upgrade?
The reason is not to break something good. I have a friend who wrecked a 996. It's not too bad just skin but just about all body parts will have to be changed.
Thank you
It all depends where you source the parts, but in the position you are in I would update the look since you are starting from a bare chassis. For the front end you would need hood, fenders, front bumper, hinges, convert the headlamp wiring etc. And the rear arches would need to be rolled a little to make the car look more authentic to a 997. It is a lot of work and normally best to buy a 997 but in your occasion I would update to a 997. Hope that helps
don't mess with Mother Nature, or in this case, Papa Porsche
If you want a 997 look, buy a 997. same with a classic 911
Don't try to make a frankencar
The 996 is beautiful in its own right
The thing is i'd love a classic 911 or a 964. The 996 is a good running car with bad skin and I think I can get it for around $5-6K. I thought hmmmm the possibilities!!??...
You asked in other posts if you could graft a 991 cockpit into a 928.
Now you want to know if you can make a 996 into a 964.
I think no one has done either - so please go ahead and try - and I doubt anyone here has the inclination to do either project so I think you're on your own.
+996.
FOR EXAMPLE, ESA just landed Rosetta's Philae probe on a comet: a 2.5-mile-wide ball of rock, ice and dust moving faster than 40,000 miles an hour.
Prior to the above, Rosetta was launched on 2 March 2004 and travelled 6.4 billion kilometres through the Solar System before arriving at the comet on 6 August 2014.
to the OP, if you have VERY, VERY deep pockets, have the skill/persistence/determination, GO FOR IT
What I meant by bad skin was the car is wrecked. It's not bad but just about all the body panel will have to replaced. Normally, I wouldn't very interested in the 996 as I am not too crazy about the way it looks(sorry). But I know the car and this is a nice running car and it is shame if it goes to the insurance co. I thought if it was possible to something with it why not. It's got some nice aftermarket stuff on it.
As for the gauge cluster for the 928 why not. That one could use a nice upgrade. I am not a purist.
You're going to buy a car you already don't like and try to turn it into a car it will never be. You will never be happy with it, and all of the air-cooled guys (which is what I assume you mean by "good old 911") will think you're a poseur.
Nothing good ever comes from buying a cheap car you don't really like and trying to turn it into a car it will never be. Head over to eBay and see what kind of premium prices Fierorrari conversions are commanding.
Incidentally, a sure-fire way to **** someone off is to apologize in advance for your opinion about how crappy you think something is. You don't like the 996 - I get it. You don't need to apologize to those of us who disagree... Your best friend doesn't care if you think his wife is ugly - but don't apologize to him for how bad you feel that you think his wife is ugly.
You can backdate a 964 because body panels from a longhood will bolt on. The 911 evolved until the 996, which was a total revolution. You can't bolt body panels from an air cooled car onto a 996. Can you make a 996 look like a 997? Sure. Then you'll end up with a car that both the 996 and 997 guys will think is stupid and would never buy.
That's an interesting conversion. It shows the type of thing you'd need to do to convert a 996 into a "964 look" car. Every body panel would need to be custom fabricated. If you've got the money, it's possible!
I forgot about this until just now, but I think Porsche has already done a "back date" on a 996. I took a photo at the Porsche Museum last fall. It's a beaut! Looks just like an air-cooled 911!
How far back do you mean by backdating?
I backdated my 996 to 1903. Dropped tons of weight by losing that bad skin. I think it came out pretty good (I even put "Ferd" on the front in homage to Mr. Porch):
i could see doing a 996 MK2 backdate to MK1. the lines on the MK1 are perfect. if i found a fixable wrecked 996GT3, i would go MK1, they never imported them into the US.
I didnt love the 996 when I first started shopping for another 911. I would never have thought of trying to make it look like another car, though. Its not like I disliked it, just didnt love it.
Fast forward three years into ownership, and I flat out love this car. Its a beautiful design to me. I definitely think its the most unique 911, and the 996.1 lights in particular are just works of art to me.
One of the goofiest things you can do is try to make a car look like another car. It never looks right. Not only that, it just screams that you are embarrassed of your own car. As a former 997.2 owner, I have a newfound appreciation for the 996, and Im just focusing on making it the best 996 it can be... not turning it into something else.
In my humble opinion, unless you are sitting on a fortune, don't waste your money on any body fabrication it will look stupid as he'll and you won't be able to sell the car. Replace the crunched parts of the body with stock pieces. If you want it to look classically retro, put a set of Fuchs wheels on it and a ducktail. It will look retro, and damn good.
If you are looking for retro ideas that fit the car and won't kill resale values, Google RPM Technik. They are a UK company that has come out with body parts and mechanical upgrades for the 996. They have 3 different variations of body work, wheels etc in pictures that you can get some ideas. Their bodywork revolves around different front/rear bumpers, a carbon fiber ducktail, and wheels such as Fuchs. Plenty of articles written about them and their 3 configurations.
