This is not a probability of success.

The 911 you sold me proved to be a whole lot of car for the money in every aspect and I am sure your good car-karma will most definitely get you back in your ideal 996 shortly.

Suggestion
I'd rather have the 'virgin' car with original IMSB and no signs of deterioration (clean oil pan, clean oil filter, no RMS leak, no funny noises) than a car that had some vaguely documented bearing replacement in the past.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently sold my 951 and I see a 996 in the near future.... It has only been a month and it feels like eons
This was my last 996. I think the next one will be midnight blue or one of the darker greys....
Like a "Seal Gray"? Yuck. I have one and I'm tired of it. It was my wife that wanted the darker colors. I'm more of a Guards Red, Speed Yellow, Orange, etc... My Boxster S is Guards Red and I get chills looking at it all the time.
So here is the list that I have compiled for the search. Thoughts are welcome.
Type: C2, C4, C4S - While I would prefer a 2002-2004, I am not overly concerned if it is a 1999-2001 for the right car.
Mechanical
Must have
6-speed
Reasonable maintenance records
RMS / IMS replacement done (or price adjusted accordingly)
No history of any major failure
Nice to have
AOS, coolant expansion tank and cap replaced
X-74 or PSS-9/10 suspension
Fister mufflers
Reasonably new brakes and tires
Exterior
Must have
Coupe
No major accidents
7+/10 condition
Colours: Dark Blue, Midnight blue metallic, Lapis Blue, Ocean Blue, Vesuvio, Violett Chromaflair, Slate Grey Metallic, Steelgrau Metallic, (and in a special case Arena Red)
18 wheels
Clear or smoked turn signals - specifically on the head lights
Nice to have
Prefer wheels other than OEM turbo twists (and would love Victor Equipment Innsbrucks)
Litronic
Rear wiper delete
Accident free
Interior
Must have
7+/10 interior
Full or partial leather
Colour: Natural Brown, Cinnamon Brown, Graphite Grey, Savanna (would take Black, but it would be a compromise to get other must haves)
3 spoke steering wheel
Bose sound system or better / Ipod connectivity
Nice to Have
Upgraded stereo
Sport seats
Fergus, I wish you had been looking for a 996 last summer! I traded in my old 996 C4S in August for a 997. It met virtually all of your requirements (although the mileage was probably too high for you). I would have made you a good deal! Oh well...
Good luck with your search!
I know, Dennis... It's all about timing
Mileage on your car would not have concerned me... I know it was well cared for.
I have not set a budget per se. It really depends on the car.
Funny...I have just about everything you are looking for.
2004 cab with 22850 miles. New clutch and fly wheel, AOS, and iMS/rms (upgrade dims pro). Tires are new, brakes are perfect, etc. mom, it's midnight blue with Cinamon full leather int.
Seems like your list has a combination of important items mixed in with some fairly trivial ones, plus some choices that will greatly reduce your possible car pool...
For how particular you are on everything else, this seems like a huge variation. Eg: A MkII C2 is a very different car than a MkI C4. For me, this would be a far more important 'selector' than some of your other requirements.... I personally love Mk2 coupes.
Makes sense... though any non-carfax maintenance records get washed away in any dealer or auction transaction...
I'd rather have the 'virgin' car with original IMSB and no signs of deterioration (clean oil pan, clean oil filter, no RMS leak, no funny noises) than a car that had some vaguely documented bearing replacement in the past.
Exterior
Yup, I'd want that too... But I'd be wanting at least 8/10 or 9/10. Much more important imho than some of the other stuff...
None of those where particularly popular colors... That might be your biggest hurdle.
Again... I'd personally want an 8/10 minimum interior.
Bose sound quality more or less sucks and is harder to upgrade than the base stereo. No OEM ipod interfaces.
Black interiors seem to hold up the best... Tan's often look extremely dated and worn to me. Gray's seem o.k. Good luck finding natural or cinnamon at all, let alone in combination with your other specific requirements.
Most MkII's are going to have lightronics, 18" Carerra wheels, newer headlights with clear turns, 3-spoke steering wheel. All MkII's have at least partial leather and alcantara headliners.
Most MkI's are going to have turbo twists, four-spoke steering wheel, amber headlight turn signals.
Tires are reasonable, ~$850 for a set of V12's. Brake pads are easy to replace and cheap.
Sorry in advance for necro-posting but I just came across this now and felt the need to wish you the best of luck in your search for a 996 Fergus. The 911 you sold me proved to be a whole lot of car for the money in every aspect and I am sure your good car-karma will most definitely get you back in your ideal 996 shortly.
After owning a few 911's since you sold me your Arena red '99, I admit to missing that car the most since the day I sold it (didn't even want to sell, got a offer from a guy driving a Cayenne that was the same colour, could not refuse). After convincing my father to buy a 996 as well as a colleague and friend of mine, I am slowly hunting for one myself as my early 996 was my favourite 911 (in part due to the awesome upgrades you did, which I will have no choice but to do over).
Good luck!
Brought home the new Pcar today. She needed a thorough wash and will need a detailing and in in the future... But I bought her as a driver and so I will do so.
Black. It needs a good detailing so no pictures yet...
It has GT3 seats, but for the life of me I can't see to fit in them comfortably... They will be up for sale soon with the BBS wheels...
Are you nuts? Either way congrats!
The proceeds from the sale should be able to fund a stage 3 setup at the min. Crank that bad boy up to 1k hp and do the Texas mile.
LOL. I have a set of them already - came with the car. Part of the agreement on this was that the wife gets the proceeds of the "part out" for her usage
