Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In talking with Scott at Automobile Associates in Canton CT we agreed that the car appeared to be clean but we decided to hold off over the winter for any major work.

Suggestion
Without records that's the only kind of PPI I would trust, but pulling the trans and inspecting the clutch and IMS really isn't all that pratical when only looking for a car...

Most of the rest of the stuff an inspection would fine is easily smoked out by a good test drive and listen.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

in November of 2014 with 55k miles a clean PPI from an independent in Roanoke VA that I was referred to. Unfortunately not much of a service history. In talking with Scott at Automobile Associates in Canton CT we agreed that the car appeared to be clean but we decided to hold off over the winter for any major work. Decided in the last week or so to just bite the bullet and get the IMS done. While in there they saw that the clutch had maybe 10k miles left on it and the plugs were absolutely toast. Scott thought they could have been the originals. The electrode was almost non existent. Original bearing was absolutely pristine so obviously no material in the filter. Stopped in to see the car while it was gutted. Saw the clutch and it just did not make sense to NOT do the clutch while it was pulled apart. Also had them do new plugs although the coil packs were good so no need for that. Picked it up last night and was blown away at the difference in the clutch. Haven't been able to really give her a run to see about the new plugs but I will this morning going to work! Just figured I would share with the group.
When it comes to a car with no records, a well-kept car with all-original parts can actually be a good thing. A no-records car with a bunch of new parts might mean the PO tried and failed to diagnose a problem, and finding original parts that are cleaner than the rest of the engine bay (or are covered with fresh greasy fingerprints) can indicate that the car had to be put back to stock before it was sold...
Full records are best; if those aren't available, I'll go with the unmolested car every time, even if it means I'll have to spend a little money to address deferred maintenance items.
Hope you enjoy the 996 for a long time to come...

That is the right time to replace the IMS, and now at least you know the status of your clutch.
IMO and enjoy the car! =)
Congrats, bac2h, I got my '01 C4 cab in November as well with about 25K on it. I took it immediately to Automotive Associates before registering it. They checked everything out and did the IMS, water pump and belts. I had it back in early December, running great - I have put about 3K on it since.
Also my '01 had a pristine dual row IMS bearing in it - Scott told me that I should replace it again in 75K. Was your a single or double row?
+1 Good point 5CHN3LL. I bought my all original unmolested 04 Cab with no records and a decent PPI. Even the pumpkins were still on it. These are great cars if taken care of.
