After the August shut down the vast majority of production was changed over to 996 and 998's, (some 998's built in Finland).

If your car has a 'W' VIN it IS a 98 but it is most likely a Cab model or a RoW import.

Under US legislation, manufacturers are allowed to designate the year of model up to a build date no later then 12 months in advance. The actual construction date of say Nov 98 doesn't automatically make the car a 98 model if Porsche had no intention of shipping it in Y98 or if marketing decided something different depending on market conditions. Porsche would designate production dates based upon their sales projections and production capacities. 1998 was an interesting year in that there were change over issues in the Stuttgart assembly plant in that during this era where the Boxster was being built along side both the 996 and the 993. The sudden 'rush' of orders for the last of the air-cooled 993 from America in 1997 and the completion of those orders along with the new and now popular Boxster impacted production of the 996. As a result, Porsche decided to make the introduction year of the 996 into North America - officially 1999. Some early production 98's did make it here for marketing reasons and Porsche leasing was screaming for some samples to make it over early. It is not known if they returned to Germany or were later sold.
Blocks of US spec 996's made in the late summer and fall of 1998 were in fact given 1999 VIN's. After the August shut down the vast majority of production was changed over to 996 and 998's, (some 998's built in Finland). The OB2 compliance issues dominated most of 1998 and as a result very few 1998 996's made it to North America - the vast majority being for RoW sales.
My 996 has a build date in the fall of 98 yet has an X year VIN. (99)

In Adrian Streather's book - 996 -The Essential Companion, he states that PAG only imported 996 Cab's in 1998 - no coupes. (Pg 22)
