Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I would like to have the timing components replaced based on the recommendation of an indy shop, that found bleed down in one my tensioner and chain slap on start up.
Leading evidence: 'vario cam pads' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'vario cam pads' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace based' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

-Should the IMS paddle be replaced during a timing service?

I currently have my car at the shop, but that dealership doesn't seem keen to replace the IMS chain paddle, as it requires the case to be split.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello. I'm a relatively new 996 owner with a 99 C2 Carrera. I would like to have the timing components replaced based on the recommendation of an indy shop, that found bleed down in one my tensioner and chain slap on start up. I recently found bits of black and orange plastic in the oil filter (no metal) and have since parked the car unused. I currently have my car at the shop, but that dealership doesn't seem keen to replace the IMS chain paddle, as it requires the case to be split. Going to an indy isn't an option in this particular case.
Questions:
Are the IMS chain paddles known to deteriorate or are known failure points?
Does the black or orange bits indicate that part is failing? Should the IMS paddle be replaced during a timing service, or will the ramps and tensioner that are accessible through the cam covers and out side block, be enough?
Thank you
-Are the IMS chain paddles known to deteriorate or are known failure points?
YES
-Does the black or orange bits indicate that part is failing?
YES
-Should the IMS paddle be replaced during a timing service?
Must split the case, major surgery and money
-will the ramps and tensioner that are accessible through the cam covers and out side block, be enough?
Tensioners and vario-cam pads are doable without major tear down but you need to find out where the material is coming from. the orange plastic is likely the vario cam pads.
Those were already done on my car also at 68 clutch rms, IMs. At 90, coils, tubes plugs. At 92 all fluids and brakes. I got lucky all those were done by previous owners. Im waiting on the amp support and I need to deal with a bent wheel. Not a lot to really do just drive the car.
