I also know that when the 996.2 came out there were some substantial changes, such as the glovebox.

This is my first post since having returned to Rennlist after having effectively stopped using the site in 2003 when I sold my last Porsche, a 964 C2.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hello,
This is my first post since having returned to Rennlist after having effectively stopped using the site in 2003 when I sold my last Porsche, a 964 C2. Anyway, I am now on the lookout for a 996 as my next 911 and am mostly leaning towards a 996.1.
I have a question on the interior, I know that around 2000 or 2001 there were some minor changes to the original 996.1 interior. I also know that when the 996.2 came out there were some substantial changes, such as the glovebox. What I am not sure though is, on the 996.1, when did they start adding side airbags to the doors, when they added the small lights to the interior door pull and when the boot (trunk) area was modified, see below for pictures of what I mean.
Any help on this?

The two shots you show in the trunk are different cars. The one with the exposed tire is a C2, and the one without a tire is a C4. The front differential and AWD components intrude into the trunk compartment of the C4, so the spare is an inflatable tire that is stored underneath the trunk floor with an air compressor to inflate it. I'm not sure about the door airbags - the photo you have posted is the first time I have seen one without door airbags.
The side airbags were added in 1999 according to Edmunds. To compare year by year just change the year component in the link below.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, I now remember why I have such fond memories of Rennlist!
Interesting about the C2 v C4 trunk/boot difference, that explains that part then. So, it seems that within the 996.1 range the 2001 MY is the only one updated with some small touches, such as the buttons for trunk release as opposed to lever, etc.
On the airbags they probably were an option for ROW in the early years and became standard, varying on market, a few years afterwards. I had assumed that there were two different door designs as I recall back when they were new there was an issue with too many interior trim squeaks and rattles on some early cars (98/99).
