I was planning to replace all three tensioners before I tackled the IMSB so I purchased another 5 cam locking tool.
Leading evidence: 'Replace three tensioners' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace three tensioners' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Performing a LN IMSB swap on 99 5 chain. Bank two exhaust cam is locked along with TDC crank pinned. Just wondering if its necessary to lock bank one cam as well? Those bank one cap plugs are a bitch to access with engine installed.
Thanks!
Yea, I know it sucks getting into those tight areas to remove the bank#2 tensioner and cam plugs, but I wouldn't risk losing timing. It would be a nightmare to correct with the engine in the car from what I've heard.
I was able to remove the caps and lock both cams. I did bank two first and just popped out the exhaust cam cap. Only the exhaust cam needs to be locked for 5 chain, hence two different locking tools in the kit. For some dumb reason I removed both caps on bank one only to remember the intake cam doesnt have locking grooves. Doh!
FWIW, its not explained in the LN instructions to lock the first cam, remove the tensioner and once the tensioner is removed you need to remove the locking tool and repeat the steps on the other bank. The kit only comes with one locking tool for either the 3 chain or 5 chain. So both cannot be locked simultaneously with the kit. I was planning to replace all three tensioners before I tackled the IMSB so I purchased another 5 cam locking tool. So, I had two and was able to lock both cams simultaneously.
the directions also do not mention its only necessary to remove 2 of the three tensioners. The tensioner next to the AC doesnt not need to be removed for the IMSB swap.
Nevertheless, progress is being made. Just have to acquire the correct size wrench for the tensioners now.
Last time u read them its says to pull the bank 2 cam under the ac. With it installed it can still pull the ims and cause the o-rings to tear when installing the cover
rereading step 7 I tend to agree with you though its worded quite differently and poorly. Better to be safe and have no tension at all. Just more stuff to pull off. Sigh.
Yea, I agree... better safe than sorry with this procedure.
The way I understand Steps 7-10, is to remove both bank's timing chain tensioners as well as the IMS chain tensioner. I would lock both cams regardless if it was a 3 or 5 chain engine.
Just my thoughts based on many past discussions on the topic.
Well it looks like the right primary chain tensioner for the 3.4 is not behind the ac compressor like on the 3.6. Thats good news. Now I just have to locate it. The zoomed pics in Bentley are not very helpful.
