The first time (about 3 years ago) I just used steel wool for the grime and then polished with Mothers.

I ended up wet sanding using 200 to 2000 grit sandpaper followed by mothers polish.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Easy question: on my '00 C2 are the stock exhaust tips stainless or chrome? I think they're stainless, but I'm not sure. I'm asking because they need a good cleaning and polishing.
Thanks
Polished stainless steel, I put a strong neo magnet on them and it only lightly stick to the surface, so it's not steel but some form of stainless steel material.
The tips on my car looked horrible when I first got the car, but some 000 steel wool with a bit of WD-40 took pretty much all the grime right off easily.
I just finished polishing mine for the 2nd time. The first time (about 3 years ago) I just used steel wool for the grime and then polished with Mothers. The results were pretty good.
This time I had the exhaust off the car anyway and decided to do a full polish. The tips had scratches that wouldn't come out with a polish. I ended up wet sanding using 200 to 2000 grit sandpaper followed by mothers polish. The came out almost perfect and look like new. The main trick was to switch sanding directions with each grade of sandpaper in order to know when the scratches from the previous layer were removed.
I really like the look of the Akrapovic tips! Im satisfied with the stock exhaust sound and and dont want to swap out the whole system. Anyone know if they Just clamp on to the OEM exhaust? And also whats a good source. I have a 2020 GT4.
Thanks!
Ummm..996 Forum...ummmm...2020 GT4..ummmmm.....7 year old thread on polishing exhaust tips...ummmm...Akrapovic tips! Wow...just wow. All I can say. "Please call Akrapovic."
BBJoe, I was actually trying to reply to to a very recent thread on this subject on the GT4 forum and mistakenly replied to the 996 thread which was attached as related. I am terribly sorry for such a stupid error. I promise Ill do my very best to never let it happen again. My sincere apologies to any 996 users who might have wasted their valuable time reading it.
Don't apologize. I read your comment three times just to counter Joe's remark. All time on earth is equal, none more important than another. Plus, this is helping burn time so I can leave work early to fetch some BBQ.
What was this thread about again?
