Suspected cause
However noticing that there was no smoke, no loss in oil pressure, I figured it was the pump.
Leading evidence: 'pump' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pump' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check other pulleys' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Did you check all the other pulleys when you had the belt off?

Check the water pump for play, any play, looseness or roughness and it's the WP.

Excuse the awesomely loud exhaust - I was still running a straight pipe on the driver's side.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is what a failing water pump on your 996 sounds like. Hopefully this will keep some folks from freaking out, thinking the rattle they hear is their IMS bearing.
P.S., If anyone knows where I can get a cheap 996 water pump, let me know! I don't have a whole lot of cash on hand at the moment (a new little girl was just added to the family
).

I was just cooling the motor down a bit. Just got home from work and it was getting HOT lying under there poking around with my mechanic's stethoscope!
Go for the Pierburg brand, KO performance had good pricing

Roger Tyson is a great supporter of the 928 community but can also get other Porsche parts at good price.
Don't forget to make a vid for us after the new water pump is in the car. So we can compare the sounds. I mean are you really sure that is where the knocking sound is coming from? A wearing out water pump?
Take the serp belt off, if the sound goes away, it's something that's being driven by the belt. Check the water pump for play, any play, looseness or roughness and it's the WP.
It was definitely the water pump. Here's the old next to the new one. I'll get a recording of the sound (or lack thereof) as soon as I finish getting the coolant flushed and refilled. For what its worth, the missing impeller blade from the old pump was stuck in the thermostat.

And here's the final product. All fixed. Excuse the awesomely loud exhaust - I was still running a straight pipe on the driver's side.

Wow! What an awesome thread. My water pump went out today and at first I expected the worst. However noticing that there was no smoke, no loss in oil pressure, I figured it was the pump. I drove slowly straight to the shop and they confirmed it was in fact the pump. Thanks for posting this as others can see and have a great idea of what could be going on with your car and not the IMS or something. Cheers!
Did you check all the other pulleys when you had the belt off? The reason I ask is I still hear a rattle unless my ears are playing me up somehow. Can anyone else still hear (the same rattle) above the loud exhaust? Put your exhaust back together and video it again. Then remove the belt and start the engine up for a short time and video it again please. Compare the videos for sound.
Great info and video/audio. Much appreciated. I love Rennlist for all the stuff I learn (and the "IHI" thread, of course)
My sounded like "blurp. splash" as it puked its guts up, spewing coolant all over the place and the coolant level low light began flashing like a $5 stripper. In its defense, it was making what I later realized was a whining, bearing-about-to-go-bad noise for about a week before it went Mt Vesuvius. Thankfully, it dried in a La Quinta parking lot across from the Florida State Fairgrounds and not in the Columbia parking lot late the night before in lovely Ybor City (Tampa), The folks at Porsche of Tampa were amazing in their pit-crew-like actions to get me back on the road asap. Great folks.
