Overall the paint is about a 7/10 but the car has perfect maintenance records and has a clean bill of health from an indy porsche shop so its been well documented and taken care of mechanically.

I am hoping my Menzurna products I used on my vette will be suitable for paint correction on this cars finish.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well if the seller gets off his butt and completes his end of the deal I should have this baby by the weekend or beginning of next week.
Full PPI just completed and safety and etest with the car for Ontario. Had small coolant leak during PPI which owner covered to have new coolant expansion tank installed.
Looking forward to getting this car after coming from the C6 Corvette world. First mods will be a full cut / polish / wax job. It has a few marks I plan to have it fixed in the fall before storage at a buddies body shop the hood needs a re-clear and a couple marks fixed.
Overall the paint is about a 7/10 but the car has perfect maintenance records and has a clean bill of health from an indy porsche shop so its been well documented and taken care of mechanically. When I am done with the detailing and touch up it will be a 9/10 exterior.
I'm going to attack this car with my Porter Cable DA polisher and some of the new microfiber cutting pads, then move onto the lake country foams to do a finish cut. I am hoping my Menzurna products I used on my vette will be suitable for paint correction on this cars finish.
I'm still debating on which wax to start off with either a Zaino, Blackfire, or the turtle wax black box.
Looks like I should have it by the beginning of next week. Little later than my impatient behind would like but it is what it is. Looking forward to being on here helping out. I'm a big DIY guy so looking forward to soaking up info. Plans are cut / polish and evaluation if I am not satisfied I am going to have a respray done in a couple spots. Really thinking of adding the IMS Guardian to it, and maybe an ipod / usb interface. I am not 100% sure on which radio is in the car at this point so I have to wait until I get it.
It already has the fabspeed cold air upgrade and fisters exhaust mod. New clutch, new tires, new brakes all around. Fresh fluids as well. Just spoke to the indy porsche shop doing the ppi mechanically its perfect. Now with new coolant tank and wipers to pass cert lol.
Very nice! Black on black C4s is on my short list for my next one. I'd take off the PORSCHE script off though. The 996 C4S has the best A$s porsche ever created. No need to add that to the trademark reflector.
Jamie- I'm using Menzerna 400 on my black cab. Uber yellow cutting pad, Harbor Freight 6" DA. Hardtop came out great. I especially enjoyed the nanoskin step (clay bar equivalent). Smooth like butta.
But the rest of the car fine lines/swirls haven't come out yet. Plus, not sure if I need a 3" for the curves. Please update later what works for you re: pad, pressure, passes, heat for the cut step. Thx.
I will update what works on the paint. That is why I went to the newish microfiber cutting pads they remove swirls and webs faster. I have a rotary if I have to get really aggressive but I prefer not to use it when I can.
My kid decided to scratch my 2015 suburban a couple weeks back the MF pads and menzurna worked perfect 15 minutes good as new.
Man oh man I am so glad I learned to work on cars. Just got the invoices the current owner is paying for the coolant bottle swap they charged him $650 labor plus the $197 tank. I understand shops have to survive but damn I am glad I am handy!
Congratulations! Looks like a great purchase. If you need any help with your DIY work, be sure to check out our

Once its in my possession I will be ordering an IMS Guardian jr for it. Regardless of the various speculation and skepticism I am going to at least have some peace of mind for not a whole lot of $
I've never really understood why a box that tells you it's time to rebuild your motor brings peace of mind, but if it works for you, that's awesome.
While the statistics say you'll probably be trouble-free, in the event that the Guardian does let you know that there's trouble, please don't be one of those evil SOBs who dump the car on some other poor sap, either private party or via Carmax.
I just signed the bill of sale on the car the dealer is processing the paperwork and should have everything wrapped up Monday afternoon / Tuesday morning.
The car as far as I know has the Fister mod done to it.

Crazy you would not believe all his previous invoices. I understand these are not the cheapest to maintain but what he has spent boggles my mind. I almost didn't buy one of these because of the invoices but when I broke it down the parts are reasonable its the labor rate that is through the roof. I guess here in Ontario if you are specialized in these type of cars it demands about $40 more / hour labor rate than a standard shop. Luckily for me I have my own hoist
Thank you I do love the look of the rear end, so much so I was looking at various wings etc and have decided I prefer the stock look.
Well my deal was a bit of a cluster F*(K but all worked out in the end. Its sitting at the dealer waiting for me to pick up Monday. Should be a fun time. First plans are the full detail on it with a paint cut and polish. I will likely do a little VFAQ for those interested in the process. Looking forward to this. I never knew I would own a Porsche just sorta got on a kick a few weeks back and have grown bored / sick of my vette. Since it was a low km car 22km I was the original owner etc... the dealer was practically begging me to trade it. I just hope hope hope the Pcar has a reliable engine. In 9 years of ownership my vette cost me a yearly oil change.
I honestly didn't even know what a 996 was until a few weeks ago haha pretty bad, then I looked at the specs and prices and started research mode. I have read every page on this forum and 6speed back to 250 pages just gathering info. I still don't fully understand the GT2 / GT3 stuff etc but I am coming along. I'll be an addict before ya know it. No stranger to fast cars etc just a stranger to Porsche. I'll likely do things a fair bit different than most owners as I am a DIY guy and my car will likely not see a shop while in my ownership. I still intend to maintain all service records etc just the labor will be on me. I already ordered a Durametric for myself and an IMS Guardian jr.
Glad to hear everything's workin' out for you Jamie! You will Definitely Save A LOT if you do the work yourself, we only have one Certified Porsche guy here & he RIPS you, i took mine to him ONCE & said Never Again! GL Buddy & Enjoy Her, BIG Difference from a Vette Good OR Bad!
Hey Turbojamie,
I'd definitely be interested in any tips/tricks/etc as you do your detail. Like you, I came into Porsche, and specifically 996, ownership somewhat on a whim. Wasn't even on my radar til earlier this year. Still learning a lot about it, but the forum has been a deep well of info.
I did my own clay/polish/wax a couple weeks after buying my car back in February, but not sure I was aggressive enough on the initial cut and polish. I was playing it pretty safe on that first go. Now that I've seen quite a few videos and techniques, I think I have a better idea of how I'd go about it the next time. Plus, I just went to a PCA Concours event here in SoCal this past weekend, and really want to clean mine up a little more. Probably not to show, but to the point I'm happy with it.
Good luck with the new car. Looking forward to seeing how it looks after you get your hands on it.
So I picked it up today threw a CEL on the way home FML going to sort that out tomorrow...
Anyways gave it a quick clean with a buffer block, then a paint cleaner and finally a black tinted wax. Improved the finish by a good margin the rear quarters really really improved I would say they went form a 6 to a 9 / 10 easily. The hood and front fenders are going to take a decent cut I am not sure how well I can repair them. They might need a respray but I won't know until I start cutting. Waiting on 2 pads to show up.

Started to work on the drivers fender and my dual action polisher tonight. Working with a microfiber pad to do some light cutting to see how bad it is. I think I am going to have to get more aggressive and maybe move to my rotary to get anywhere with it. The dual action just doesn't have enough cut. Here is a close up well lit shot of the hood before I start working with it.

Here is a shot of the drivers fender after polishing, it looked like the hood.

Spent some more time with the DA think I found a setup that works with the DA. Slower than the rotary but safer. After speaking with a buddy that trained me on paint correction he says its pretty much impossible to remove the pitting from the sandblasting effect you get off the road. I can polish out the spider webs and swirls no problem. So if your in the same boat then your looking at a repaint. If your just looking to remove swirls and spider webs I can help out.
In my case the doors, fenders, rear end and roof are all perfect. The hood and front bumper are likely to need a respray in the fall time. I budgeted that into my purchase price though before I even bought the car.
So I believe I have found what seems to work very quickly efficiently and most importantly clear paint. I had to take a step back after going at it the other night because to be honest I have never polished a car with so many deep swirls. So after messing with a bunch of my products I have found a pad and polish which works on my Porter Cable 7424.
The polish is Menzurna super intensive polish. The pads I am using are found here
http://www.autogeek.net/vcpad.html
these pads seem to work much better than a couple comparable orange pads I have from different manufacturers.
The process is pretty simple put an X of product side to side on the pad and spread about a 2x2 area start the machine on #1 to spread the product then increase speed to 6. You want to do very slow overlapping passes. First side to side then top to bottom. You want to be moving fairly slow across the surface and ensure the pad is spinning, I apply a fair amount of pressure as well. After going side to side and top to bottom shut the machine off and inspect the paint. If you still see swirls and spider webs do it again. I found some pretty aggressive spider webs in my car come out in one pass.
After I am satisfied with the panel, I proceed to using a white pad and menzurna super finish. Same as above for the process, after this is done and you are satisfied with the panel you can wax it with your favorite wax. I use Zaino or blackfire.
Realistically I have about 6 hours into the hood, front fenders and rear quarters. This is only the top half of the fenders and quarters I have not even started on the sides of the car. The roof needs to be done as well still. To do it properly with the most correction your looking at 10+ hours. I basically do a panel or two a night if I am lucky.
Nice work, Jamie. Does the method above work on waterspots too? I did a clay/polish/wax (Blackfire/Klasse/Pinnacle) and can't get the waterspots on the hood and roof out whatsoever. I was very disappointed, but I didn't use my orbital because I didn't think they were that deep.
Never been a fan of the MKII headlights as those were a compromise taken from the turbo model to appease consumer pressure. However, with the black color the front looks great. And the rear end is a Boticelli! Congrats.
100% it will remove etched in water spots from the paint. I feel your pain I know exactly where you are coming from when I started to learn to detail my first black car. This is why I hate / love black haha. Looks awesome but a pita to keep flawless. Fortunately for me this car is 12 years old and shows some wear which is good because I cannot fix it and have to live with it for now...
I might wrap my hood in 3M carbonfiber DiNoc film because its too bad to correct. The rest of the car I will be able to make very very good.
Also thinking of doing my wheels in Anthracite Grey plasti Dip as they are peeling a bit.
