I like to advise used car buyers to go to the various used car pricing web sites and plug in the car's numbers and get the prices for wholesale/trade-in, private sale, and retail sale.

The options are indeed the important part for the price, if it's a base C2 with no options (other than the Tip) it's probably a 15-17 car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Full disclosure right up front: I'm a 993 owner but am posting this question here instead of the 993 forum as you know how 993 guys are about 996's and what do we know about 996's anyway. I have found an '01 996 Tip with 69k miles and am strongly considering it (keeping the 993 however). Very nice condition with service records. No real cosmetic issues. Black/black. Has the solid spoke turbo twists. Very clean. Has never had the IMS problem so at 69k I'm guessing it won't. My understanding is that for some reason Tips rarely experienced the IMS failure, at least that's what I'm told by my very knowledgeable indy shop. Anyhoo, what do you think would be a fair (to me) purchase price? the owner is asking $23,900 which I think is much too high, but I'd like the opinion of the guys that know these cars. Is $21k realistic? Too high? Too low? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

It really depends on the options. $20k is more in the ball park IMHO. If it's loaded with goodies this will influence the price. Aero kit, nicer rims, full leather... Get the options sticker under the hood and look them up. Are you sure you'll be able to deal with how much more refined the 996 is over a 993?! You'll have to top off the oil less, that's for sure!

POST 3Original post

$20k is fair IMO considering it's a tip which generally sells lower in the coupe version than a cab version. However besides the IMS hysteria, the '01 historically had the most amount of cylinder head issues out of the 996 lineup(minimal but still should be pointed out in your case). If you are a performance oriented driver and are working with a $20-24k budget, I'd look at '02+ car if you're considering a tip as that is more refined with quite a bit more shift patterns/maps. My $.02

POST 4Original post

You realize that Quad hangs out in here sometimes right? You'll never be allowed back into the 993 forum again! Is it a C2 or C4? The 4s go for a bit more due to the AWD and (for those that want to build a track car) sharing the GT3 tub. The options are indeed the important part for the price, if it's a base C2 with no options (other than the Tip) it's probably a 15-17 car. If it has a good mix of desirable options that can change it. If it doesn't have a sunroof then it's a unicorn and will fetch a higher price. As I understand it the 996 Tip is better than the 993's, but it's still a Tip. Excellent for a DD if you don't want to mess with shifting, but a bit slow to respond when you want to pick the gears. As far as the IMS, no NA 996 is immune to it and milage isn't a certainty either. I wouldn't panic over it or any of the other common* modes of failure (they really aren't that common when factor in how many cars were made). If you pick one up, just drive it and enjoy it for what it is, but understand that there is some risk that the engine could go. We have a 01 C4 that is still just shy of 70k and still on it's original IMS. I'll replace it this summer when it's transmission get fixed, but only because I'll be in there already. Tell us more about the car (pics too) and we can probably help you a bit more on the price.

POST 5Original post

i wouldn't pay more than $16K - get the IMS done and other lacking services for $3K and you have invested $19K which top price for 2001 996 narrow body OR save up another $10K and buy yourself a well sorted C4S which is a much better choice visually and drives much better

POST 6Original post

I know is small change but loaded with options, full leather, litronics, etc - low 20's is the range. If stripped high teens. Like stated above - pics would help.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just now got back home from a PCA DE weekend at Mid-Ohio (with the 993) and getting caught up. The car in question is a base model with practically no options, other than the Tip. A dealer has it on consignment and, based on the input here, asking waaay too much - high $22's. I may end up passing on it as you know how dealers are; probably won't accept a reasonable offer. Thanks so much for the input. It was all very helpful.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 12358935

It is not for you to decide what the dealer will do or will not do. If you want the car go make a serious attempt to buy it. I suspect the dealer will let it go for less and he'll still make money. I like to advise used car buyers to go to the various used car pricing web sites and plug in the car's numbers and get the prices for wholesale/trade-in, private sale, and retail sale. To the dealer, the car is really only worth around wholesale. That is what he would allow the owner on trade in. If the car is worth owning -- and spend two hours of a salesman's time determining that -- then make an offer at something over wholesale. Have at hand a list of other cars you are "interested" in and they do not have to be Porsches. It can help if they are a bit less expensive than the Porsche. Know the cars on the list to quote asking price, wholesale price, and options and other things to let it be known you have done your research. Make it clear that you are going to buy a car that day provided you get your price. If you can't get your price at this dealer for this car then you have the 2nd and subsequent cars on the list. But impress upon the dealer you will buy a car. Oh, and be sure your offer is being passed on to the GM or sales manager. A salesman can only say no. And he will say no if you offer a low price as that's his commission he is seeing go bye bye. Remember: Price is not fact only an opinion. The dealer/seller has his opinion, you should have yours.

Is there a specific reason you're not considering the C4? It takes an hour or so to remove the FWD components if that's the goal, and you end up with a significantly stiffer chassis.

i'm not a fan of making large purchase on ebay and not sure where you are located but if seller agrees to PPI this looks like a nice tiptronic example that you could probably get for $15K offer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-...m=301661520425

Thanks for the heads-up. This particular 996 is on its third Fleabay listing and I actually did offer him $15.5 and he declined. That was when he first listed it. He may be more receptive now.

To be fair that is probably the most constructive thing KK has ever said about a M96 car... He's actually correct too. The 996 is not going to appreciate like the 993 (at least not for the foreseeable future), but I suspect that David (and everyone else reading this thread) is aware of that fact already.

i wouldn't let a multiple listings on CL or ebay scare you - most guys selling porsches don't have their feet quite on the ground and list ridiculous asking prices(just look in the RL vehicle marketplace) - keep grinding him on the lowball offer and get his phone number - be persistent if you feel its the car for you.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 12363530

good point and most likely the case - having owned a 1995 C2 and 1996 C4 i can tell you they are great cars BUT the 996 is much more comfortable/driver friendly - the C4S IMHO is a better looking car than the 993 and drives better too.

UPDATE: bought an '02 996 this morning. Black/black. Higher mileage than I would have preferred but with good service records and owned by a long-time PCA member. Thanks for all the input and help. Dave
