I have this kit installed on my 2002 c4s paired with their x cross over 200 cell cats.

Downside: I usually unclip the oil filler when adding/changing oil, and I'm running about 50% for slamming the engine cover down on the filler pipe with it unclipped.

I believe if you look at your stock intake the air intake is not inside the engine compartment (at least this is the case for my 996 Turbo) and this is a true cold air intake; 2) Uses filters that have to be periodically cleaned and oiled which introduces an opportunity to improperly clean or over oil the filters with possibly harm coming to the MAF.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am considering fitting a new air induction kit, many reports of better sound!
plus I have itchy fingers and want to do some mod's -
so kits like this
http://www.fabspeed.com/996-carrera-...ceted_search=0
they all say they won't turn on your engine check light etc,
but are simple mod's like this 'safe' for the engine, long term?
I am sure they are but interested in thoughts
The problems I see with kits like the one you linked to are 1) The intake sucks in engine compartment air, which is hot air, thus it is a hot air intake.
The stock filter is a pretty good filter so I would also worry that any other filter would filter less particles from the air before it reaches the engine.

I put the Fabspeed Comp carbon fiber intake on my '03 C4S.
It sounds better from within.
It
may
, or may not, be more responsive between 3500 and 5000 RPM.
I
may
, or may not be taller and better looking after adding it; probably not.
I
am
out around $975 with installation, but do not regret it.
No CEL, but some posters who note rubbing on the convexity of the intake from the deck are exactly correct.
I suggest a small strip of foam rubber or equivalent on the deck, to reduce this. Annoying scuff on the intake, but it's not a deal breaker. I would do it again. YMMV.
I have the evoms intake on mine. Suggest you add the sock on top of the filter to keep it cleaner. My car is faster and more responsive with all the mods (intake, IPD plenum, headers, mufflers, FVD tune). Hard to say how much the intake adds.
Been running the single version of this intake for three years and have had zero issues. Much better induction sound and improved throttle response. True it does suck more hot air from a standstill. Once you get moving the intake temps drop to comparable levels of the stock unit. Carbon Fiber also doesn't retain as much heat as black plastic, so I would think heat soaking would be more of an issue with to stock box. Plus I have a **** eating grin every time I stomp on the go pedal and when I open the engine compartment. Go for it you won't regret it.
I should mention I did intake in combination with Fabspeed Max Flow exhaust and 200 cell xpipe cats.

I've had the old version of the Evo V-flow, currently have the K&N 57-7000. The intake sounds cool...no idea if it has any performance bump - but you CAN access some of the parts of the engine bay that are not accessible with the stock airbox in place. I suspect that's what I like most about it - and of course that the engine bay is a bit less full of big plastic boxes...
Interweb picture of someone else's install:
While I don't think the K&N's housing does an adequate job of sealing against engine-bay heat, the stock snorkel attachment is retained. My MKII wing stuffs air into the intake at speed, so I don't spend a great deal of time agonizing about heat soak pushing up intake temps. It would be easy to add some additional insulation, but I'm not exactly trying to wring the last HP out of my M96 on a daily basis...
In the PDRC (People's Democratic Republic of California), you need a CARB certification to avoid the wrath of the smog ***** for any aftermarket parts that are on the car when it's emissions-tested - and the K&N is CARB certified...
Oh, and they're polite enough to just include the K&N sticker in the box rather than just plastering it to the intake in the event you prefer to be stickerless. That's much appreciated.
The carbon-fiber intake with dual filters is beautiful, but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...
The K&N came with a filter "sock," incidentally - I did not need to purchase one.
Well, yes.
My own philosophy is that I'm NEVER going to have the fastest, nor most powerful Porsche, in my community, let alone my state or region.
So, I've decided to have the most beautiful---that happens to be rather fast and powerful.
The Fabspeed contributes to both. It adds happiness. At some point in life, that becomes the central tenet of one's actions, including purchases.
My image idol, if you will, is the Singer 911 series. My recollection is that they are not spectacularly faster than a well tuned 964. And yet: who cares?
Not everything in life is HP and 0-60. I plan to incrementally make my 12 year old C4S a little better, a little more appealing, a little faster, and a little more unique, one piece at a time.
Many of these things could be readily solved with a brand new factory delivery 991, in color-to-match: and yet, I'd rather pick up a stray from the pound and make him into a trusted companion, than order a purebred from a breeder. To each his own.
k&n provides dyno sheets for the intake I bought...but as I did not do before and after pulls, I'm not gonna say I know the car makes 12 peak hp more than it did.
As for laughing about the car looking and sounding cooler for ridiculous money...seen the exhaust aftermarket for our cars?
If the concept of paying for "looks and sounds cool" was that distasteful to you, wouldn't you be driving a Miata, extanker? Or perhaps a Honda Insight?
Well put Schnell--however, both of those are needlessly expensive, and dangerously close to being 'cool'.
Might I suggest instead a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria? Champagne brown is very inoffensive and does well in resale; most retirees prefer the 2005-2010 variety, as they have depreciated nicely, and will only maintain their value thereafter. You'll want to get the clear plastic slipcovers as well (just like Grandma Betty had in the 'parlor'), so as not to scratch up the cloth seats and decrease the resale value.
Then again: One can buy the car you want and like, alter/improve it to your heart's content, drive it, and **** the resale value. Let my executors worry about resale. Serious 'investment' has almost nothing to do with the vehicles we drive, but for the occasional person who lucked out keeping his RS America or 73 911s: by which time, the money therein could have grown tenfold if put into anything else.
Those who worry about a Porsche as an investment should consider either a trained investment advisor or a different career.
Do a search for the Orange Cap mod (and other variations). Just did mine for about $30, ad the intake sound is very much improved! Not the bling of the pricey ones, but I'll bet the sound is close. (Took out my heimholtz box as well. Free.)
Sounds like the most cost effective option. But yes, if one enjoys staring at parts of your car that the entire world couldn't care less about
: The FabSpeed carbon intake is a good route to go. For only 30x the price of an Orange Cap!
I think with any basic mod, it's irrelevant whether or not you get HP gains unless you are racing and need every 1/100th of a second improvement. To feel any additional 'kick' in the seat on acceleration, you'd need to go all out and fit every mod possible, including a turbo.
So like someone said earlier, it's all about sound and look - both of which are 'cosmetic' and subjective. It's about making yourself feel better. forget the HP gains!
I have this kit installed on my 2002 c4s paired with their x cross over 200 cell cats. Had the air intake put in 1 year ago and the cats installed about 1 month ago.
No issues at all, no check engine problems. The sound is very nice and really has a nice buzz when you punch it. Paired with the cats the sound changes to a deep throaty sound and with the PSE system is sounds like a cup car.
Don't worry about a thing easy installs and great performance.
Did I get more HP with the air intake only I have doubts but looks amazing and sounds great.
As stated by others, the Porsche original airbox is very good, and is also a cold air box. If you just want extra sound and no documented HP gain, then this is the cheapest option by far.
$30 with free shipping from your local Chinese factory.
I have this, just to try it, there is a bit more air intake sound between 2-3000 RPM, and a lot more above 4.5000 RPM. I run stock on a 2002 MKII Carrera.
What this mod does is eliminate the tube directed at the resonance chamber. Search for orange cap mod on the forum for more info.
I bought my car with the EVOMS intake on it. It definitely alters the sound of the car. It's a bit louder and more aggressive sounding. No idea on any power gains. From a heat perspective I think it is at least as good as the factory box since it still employs the ducted cold air from the grill.
From a maintenance perspective you can buy an oiled or non-oil filter. If you go non-oiled then it's about the same as factory.
I like the filter cover that someone posted earlier in this thread, I'll probably pick one up.
I really don't understand why people upgrade their intakes for major $ just to get some additional sound when they can either get a Fister mod or new exhaust. The same people also worry about MAF issues and constantly repost about the same potential issues. The intake is subtle enough to only be noticed by you and people really close by. Other wise, just get an app like xlr8 and pump it through your speakers like BMW. I can't even notice my Evoms due to my exhaust. my $.02
I've got an older generation Fabspeed exhaust which is louder than the current version. I can still hear the intake over the exhaust when accelerating at low RPMs.
I'm looking at the Filterwears catalog. I can't figure out which one to order for the EVOMS v-Flow Filter. Which one did you order for your Fabspeed system?
I like the K&N...
* weighs a bit less
* sounds a bit better
* big black plastic piece of crap deleted from engine bay
For example, I am able to access the connectors and wire retainers for all 4 02 sensors with the K&N. The K&N also allows more light from above to get down below, which is handy when you're working on the car under shop lights with no work light underneath.
Downside: I usually unclip the oil filler when adding/changing oil, and I'm running about 50% for slamming the engine cover down on the filler pipe with it unclipped. This is less a fault of the K&N and more an issue with my (apparent) inability to learn.
Well I must be deaf then because I also have Evoms intake but Tubi mufflers and I can't hear anything. I got mine though for better breathing and didn't even consider it for the sound as I got it after everything else.
Different strokes for different folks applies here...
^ With the second-gen Tubis, you can't hear s**t from the intake. I only ever heard the intake for that time between getting rid of my Tubis and installing the Fisters.
It is not a "hot air intake" as many would like to believe. It has been independently proven that within 15 seconds after setting off the temp in the engine bay is within 5-6 degrees Celsius of ambient, matching the stock figures.
At the end of the day, you are adding some power, adding some great looks and saving some weight. It's all about what makes you as an individual get the most satisfaction/$ spent out of your car. For me, simple bolt ons like intakes/exhaust/suspension provide the most reward per dollar spent on my personal car. Things that I can feel and hear make me way happier than any sane person should, and I know you are all in the same boat!
I know I can't sell an intake to everyone, some people want to spend less money, some like the stock intake and believe that it can't be improved. That is totally fine with me. All I know is that any customer I have sold an intake to decided to purchase it because they wanted to get more enjoyment out of their car without spending a ton of money, and I have never had a complaint yet!!
Yup. This has been rehashed over and over. Nothing has changed or how else would the aftermarket vendors stay in business? It keeps our economy ticking for sure
This is very true and you've made some good points in the previous post. As I've learned, some live in a gated community where they do not wish to **** off their neighbors and present a squeaky clean image, for example. For others, the Supercups may just do the trick.
I will let you decide which side of the fence I fall on. BUT, if I had a ton of money, I WOULD have a high cube American V8 with a disgusting cam and an exhaust that would make small children fall over.
I don't think I will find myself in a gated community in the future, they would kick me out
Many, many posts ago - either here or on 986forum, I posted about firing up the Porsche - it was loud enough to make a kid in a stroller on the sidewalk burst into tears.
That
was a good day.
*edit*
It was back on 986forum on 8/15/09...
"While I didn't think my exhaust setup (Crios drill mod + fabspeed secondary bypass pipes) was THAT loud, I got chastised by [the] Mrs. today for making a little kid in a stroller cry. I goosed the throttle a little when I started up the Box after breakfast out and apparently things were louder than I thought.
Personally, the kid looked a little old to be in a stroller, and thus is probably a wuss and will wind up driving a '99 Intrepid..."
My Fabspeed cats make my kid stop crying so it does just the opposite for me!
For loud I remember when I was installing my cats I decided to turn the car on when it didn't have the cats or mufflers on. Upon cold start that engined bellowed pretty loudly...It was great!
Measure the diameters, proximal and distal, along with the overall length and then send them an Email. I did this, and avoided ordering the wrong one. Mine fit just right. The owner was most helpful and responded promptly.
Tell him 'valkuri' sent you---and, he'll have absolutely no idea who you're talking about...
Because it's enjoyable, and life is short. Beyond that, I have absolutely no rational explanation for you.
Looks about right, but I'd send them an Email. Just let him know it's for a Fabspeed setup like the one he recently sent to AZ, and it'll probably spark the owner's memory. Just delivered to me 2 weeks ago.
Fortunately, where I live we have very few gated communities.
Instead, we have the highest rate of Concealed Carry permit holders in the United States. Which appears to produce the same effect on the proportion of undesirables cruising the nice side of town. Go figure.
The kid in question wasn't 85 with a prostate the size of a cantaloupe. Well, as far as I know. I didn't actually ask about the prostate.
But eventually, he'll be PERFECT for a 993.
That was the reason I put a glass pack on the Jeep. The conversation with the exhaust shop when my pipe broke just after the cat went something like...
"Tim, I really like the sound it's making, other than I don't want it right in the middle of my car, can you do something?"
Tim replied, "We can put a glass pack on it, price is similiar to a stock muffler. [I think it was $140 installed]"
"That sounds great, I've never had a loud car before."
Tim, now with a twinkle in his eye, "Good man, let's do it!"
Now the Jeep passes the tunnel test, which is when I go through a tunnel I can hear myself over the traffic noise, and it sounds like a tractor when at idle.
