I've a Fabspeed dual filter intake but have not (yet) replaced the intake plenum with an IPD or other aftermarket device.

Trading up is probably the 'rational' thing to do at that point.

I believe I will replace the mufflers with Fisters, +/- new cats, and then hold out until I hit about 65,000 miles.

Suggestion

However there are mixed reports in using the 997 3.8L S headers on the 3.6L 996 so that maybe a better option.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've seen a few sets of 996 X51 exhaust headers for sale (Ebay and elsewhere). I'm fully cognizant that the standard 3.6 and the X51 are measurably and substantially different---as one would expect, given the $20,000 premium or so that Porsche initially charged. My question: Any utility whatsoever to simply adding the exhaust headers? The diameter is larger, which might be useful although I'm simply not well versed enough to know. I've a Fabspeed dual filter intake but have not (yet) replaced the intake plenum with an IPD or other aftermarket device. By 'utility': Sound quality, power (which I doubt), responsiveness (ditto), better golf swing: Whatever. I welcome your collective input---thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

They actually have nothing to do with the X51, they are option X54 stainless steel exhaust tips and they're only function is cosmetic.

POST 3Original post

I thought he was talking about the headers, not the exhaust tips. I think the X-51 headers have larger primary tubes.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, the actual exhaust headers. Proximal to exhaust/catalytic converters.

POST 5Original post

without the increase in the rest of the motor about the only thing that will happen is less torque down low and more power up top where you rarely will use it. (6K RPM and up). So unless you are a track junkie that can drive the car at the highest level. then no you will only be lighter in the wallet.

POST 6Original post

My mistake, a lot of folks seem to think that the X54 tips have something to do with X51 cars. Mmm! I've really lost today, I'm in the wrong forum and was thinking about X50s not X51s

POST 7Original post

You will lose bottom end and only gain a few hp up top, especially if that is your only mod. The primaries are spec'd too big for the stock 3.6L motor to be effective. However there are mixed reports in using the 997 3.8L S headers on the 3.6L 996 so that maybe a better option.

IMO you're going to be better off getting new mufflers and doing something with the cats and tune it somehow. If after that point you decide you need headers or a new intake then that's the time to do it. Also, these cars are getting old, those headers have been bolted in for years now and are pretty happy where they are at, it may be asking for more trouble than it's worth to try and take them off at this point.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I appreciate this and subsequent comments; thank you. I believe I will replace the mufflers with Fisters, +/- new cats, and then hold out until I hit about 65,000 miles. Then, it's off to Jake Raby for a stage I. $20,000 or so, but it's basically a new and more powerful engine, rather than sinking near equivalent money into another later model car to achieve the same thing. Trading up is probably the 'rational' thing to do at that point. But buying my fifth Porsche when I've got a perfectly good SUV wasn't meant to be rational! I prefer to 'fiddle' with what I've got.

If you're going to send it off to a builder than I wouldn't mess around with new headers. Way too much risk one of those bolts gets stuck and you have to deal with it. Let the builder take care of that. IMO
