Mine used to beep on lock when I installed the after market radio, but I fixed that when I installed the new double DIN unit ( removed the brown wire from the radio carriage).

Suggestion
Disconnecting the pressure switch in the center console is sufficient to cause the car to always emit a single beep when the alarm is armed - if that's the goal.

So I'm wondering if someone with a working remote will try using first the remote (lights should flash) and then the key in the door (I get no light flash).

The Manual doesn't say what happens using the key.

The car acknowledges lock/unlock with light flash....using the remote.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As a new owner of a 99 996, I wanted to find out if my door locks are working correctly. The button on the key-fob locks and unlocks the doors but the car does not make noise or flash the lights. So, its hard to tell when the car is locked or not. Is that normal?
1. Is there a factory alarm system (standard or optional)?
2. How should I be notified when remote locks or unlocks the car?
On a 99, no light flashes or beeps=normal. There is a factory alarm system and interior infrared detectors. If the car beeps when locking something is unsecured (trunk, engine lid, fuel filler door, center console lid, door). Personally I like the fact the car does not flash the lights or beep when locking/unlocking. If you lived in a city or apartment complex, all those beeps and light flashes are truly friggin annoying.
The car will beep if you have the frunk, glovebox, armrest compartment, or engine bonnet not closed properly. There may be a few other things that make it beep as well. Otherwise, just the lights flash on my 996. I think it's once for locking and twice for unlocking.
As others said, this is normal. If you want something other than the default behaviour, you can get it programmed by the dealer or someone with a PST2 or PIWIS.
It's incorrect that a 99 does not flash the lights. My '99 flashes on lock and unlock.
It is accurate that the car does not make noise if there are no faults when the alarm is activated.
Disconnecting the pressure switch in the center console is sufficient to cause the car to always emit a single beep when the alarm is armed - if that's the goal.
Huh! Well not exactly incorrect but programmed differently. It's a moot point. My car definitely does not flash the lights on lock/unlock, but yours does, so different programming. Makes one wonder what else can be done differently by a dealer and PST2/PIWIS.
I believe the lights flashing are the "correct" - i.e. as-shipped behavior - otherwise, unless you are close enough to hear the solenoids, you would have no indication of whether the alarm is on or off when you hit the button, which would be stupid.
Mine flashes twice on locking and once on unlocking. No beep unless something is still opened. Then I see the red flashing on the front sill about every second when the alarm is fully armed.
I read the Owners Manual. You are correct. The car acknowledges lock/unlock with light flash....using the remote. The Manual doesn't say what happens using the key. My remote quit working years ago so I lock/unlock with the key. So I tried it in the garage. Locking/unlocking with the key produces no light flash. I cannot try it using the remote. So I'm wondering if someone with a working remote will try using first the remote (lights should flash) and then the key in the door (I get no light flash). Maybe time for me to pony up and get a new remote!
A beep means one of the zones is open or one of the switches is bad. Zones monitored are: trunk, engine lid, doors, glove compartment (if you have one), fuel filler door and center console lid. You will have to proceed by process of elimination, or go to someone who has the PIWIS/Durametric and it will tell you what zone is open.
One beep - and the alarm still arming - means a non-critical fault - like DBJoe said above, that might be the center console, the radio, or glove box. A critical fault - like the front trunk or a door ajar - proudces two beeps and prevents the alarm from arming.
So, at least the list of suspects is short. If you have an aftermarket stereo, it's likely that the installer did not notice the alarm wire.
As far as the center console - if you loosen the console (by pulling the shift **** and removing the two hex nuts and all of the Torx bolts) and pull it up slowly, you'll see an alarm contact that mates with a plunger on the center console lid. If you don't know it's there and you pull the console out quickly, it's fairly easy to snap the alarm wire and switch off, resulting in beeps forever unless you repair or delete that switch.
Same here. Mine used to beep on lock when I installed the after market radio, but I fixed that when I installed the new double DIN unit ( removed the brown wire from the radio carriage).
