Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You realize that Tiptronic changed over the years.
Leading evidence: 'Replace over the years' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace entire tranny or are the clutches serviceable' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Another significant difference I've noted is the speed at which the PDK changes gears, and how smooth the gearchange is compared to a Tiptronic.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First off....
I'm asking this forum because this is the only technical forum there is - as far as I'm concerned - but I know there is a lot of other entertainment here. So here it goes:
Are PDK transmission clutches serviceable? I read on the 991 forum that supposedly the PDK clutch is supposed to last over a 100K miles but what then? Do you replace the entire tranny or are the clutches serviceable? If you would need a new tranny, than one would need to start saving up for that rainy day.
P.S. The motive of my question is that my Macan has a PDK, which I love BTW.
Everything breaks eventually. Coonsidering the current state of PDKs not being repaired at the dealer level, but transported back to Germany, I'm guessing that everyone should start praying for aftermarket rebuilds from wrecks. For me, the warning light false alarms that can put you on a flatbed were enough to get me to step back. Though not as sexy as the PDK, the Tiptronic has 25 plus years of service here in the states and can be worked on by any dealer or competent indie. Performance wise I'd put the latest Tips at 85% to 90% (mabe even a little more) of the PDK.
PDK is just a dual clutch system. So yes, it's serviceable.
You realize that Tiptronic changed over the years. It's like saying a 2015 Corvette has a chevy V8 just like a 1954 Corvette. Aside from the commonality that it's a V8 motor produced by Chevrolet, there is no other common connection.
Automatics have nothing on dual clutch transmissions, although Z06/7 marketing teams are doing their best to say the contrary.
The PDK on my Macan is simply amazing. I've never been a fan of the pseudo-manual concept but the PDK is very nice. Instantaneous gear shifts are amazing.
I did find out that Porsche only swaps them out and sends them back to Germany for investigative dis-assembly. This is to protect intellectual property and for PR damage control I presume.
Supposedly, PDKs are going to last the intended life of the car 150K - 200K miles.
Yes the Tiptronic trans has been around for many years and it is a very reliable unit.
I'm not sure how easy it is to find a shop to perform involved work on these units though. My understanding is that there are relatively few shops nationwide that can rebuild these. I don't think AAMCO can handle them.....
The PDK, while newer, is in it's 7th year of production and has been updated some.
Having owned both the Tip and the PDK, I can tell you that they perform quite differently.
I am not talking about efficiency of torque conversion, I am talking about how the trans "feels". Very different.
The PDK is a basically a manual transmission with electronically actuated clutches (2) and so it feels like a manual.
For example, you don't see the engine RPM vary while the car is at a constant speed such as can happen with a torque converter automatic. You can feel engine compression deceleration akin to a conventional manual, etc.
Another significant difference I've noted is the speed at which the PDK changes gears, and how smooth the gearchange is compared to a Tiptronic.
Part of the smoothness is because the PDK does not need to cut back on engine power during shifts as is the case with the Tiptronic.
PDK's weak point is to not be ble to withstand any huge amounts of torque increase than it was initially designed for. As long as you don't go for any stage 3 power upgrades and/or you don't abuse the towing limits and keep your fluids maintained, you should be good, sensors aside...
I also learned that there are 2 types of. PDK. There are dry clutch and wet clutch dual clutch systems. The dry clutch overall suffer a lot more from their ability to handle higher torque and require more frequent maintenance. The wet clutch system can handle more torque and does not require as much service provided that its limits are not exceeded. Towing naturally would put extra burden on the dual clutch system, hence the low tow capacity on the Macan.
Completely agree. Completely different animals. PDK is essentially a manual tranny that you can choose to let the computer do the shifting for you; which happens to be the default choice.
