Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Typically I am using my phone for nav but it would be nice to not completely disable my nav system by removing that component so that I can gain a storage shelf for my phone and whatever else.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I have a 2002 Porsche Turbo and I had two questions...
First I was wondering if it's possible to remove the DVD part of the navigation system in a 996 & still have the nav system work. The part # I'd like to remove from the car to gain the ability to have storage shelf in it's place is 996.642.122.01 (#5 from the diagram below).
Typically I am using my phone for nav but it would be nice to not completely disable my nav system by removing that component so that I can gain a storage shelf for my phone and whatever else. Just stinks that I have to take up a spot inside the center console area there for loading up new maps which is something I would rarely ever do.
The diagram is from

btw.
My guess is that you can't remove that component and expect the nav components to still work but I wanted to ask.
Another question I have is regarding part # 6 in the diagram (the retaining frame part # 993.645.173.00)... that frame has what I am assuming is a grounding point since it has a wire attached to it that runs into the center console. I was wondering if someone could tell me what that wire attaches to.
Thanks!
Want a WAG? You insert the nav DVD, it uploads to the navigation unit, you remove the DVD and throw it in your tool box. It doesn't have to be in there to work...right? Just for fun, disconnect the DVD unit wire and see if the Nav still works, then you'll have your answer. Like I said, a WAG.
I've had pretty good success with the GPS in the car but I'd guess that's only because the roads around my area or where I typically drive don't change all that often so I guess I've lucked out.
So I tried to pull the DVD input unit and put a storage cubby in place of it and the radio still works however it must do something with the nav functionality because the nav screen just says initializing when I let it go for 5 minutes out in the driveway. Re-installed & it worked as expected so I suppose it is required which answers question #1.
For my second question I had listed regarding the (assumed to be ground) wire that attaches to the frame around the dvd unit... I had to remove the retaining frame in order to put the shelf in which means that wire needs to find a new home or get left loose in there which I'm not a fan of. Does anyone know the function of the wire that attaches to the retaining frame in our cars? I tried to locate the wire's function but I cannot seem to find anything.
Thanks,
Chris
