Yes, the storage of the console is handy but the clean look makes the sacrifice worth it.

I will contact Becker directly as it seems the CDR23 unit has some limitations (no stereo for bluetooth playback) so I may have to change my unit to a CDR220 and get the Becker adapter for optimal results.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm strongly considering doing a console delete as part of an interior restoration/modification. I currently have the center console intact, with top and bottom storage shelves instead of the vestigial CD slots. It's pretty handy, but I've always thought the center consoles in the 996 and 986 look like a design afterthought and that the fit and finish leaves a bit to be desired. I have kept the factory single-DIN stereo (with
Becker Autosound Bluetooth mod
), and my HVAC controls will stay in the dashboard.
Before I drop the $500 or so for the parts, I'd like to know whether anyone who has done the console delete has any regrets. Do you miss the storage the console provided?
None whatsoever. It's an absolute must if you're tall. I did it and have never looked back.
Tell me about this Becker Bluetooth Mod. I have the BOSE system with CD23 head unit, and would love to find a solution. What do you have?
I don't regret it, I just wish I'd done it sooner so I could get the right carpet color match.
I also didnt want to pay $65-70 for the plastic cover thingy so i designed it myself and 3D printed it. Been thinking of selling them and perhaps custom versions for switches and/usb power etc
No regrets and strongly recommend.
I am also looking into doing the Bluetooth retrofit for my CDR23. I found this from Rennkit:
https://rennkit.com/product-info/blu...-retrofit-kit/
Does anyone have any experience with it?
That's the setup I used on my Boxster (986.2). It works fine, but for a few bucks less and a week without the radio, Becker does the install with an internal module. I don't honestly know exactly what they do to the stereo unit but it's all internal. The stereo looks the same, but now with a sticker from Becker saying that it has Bluetooth.
I think the functionality is basically the same, but I'm not techie enough to know. The Becker solution seems to work fine for me. I'll pay attention to the audio quality in the Boxster/Rennkit setup and compare it to the 996/CDR23 Becker mod to see if I can perceive a meaningful difference.
Thank you so much for the info. After reading your post I did some more digging and see now what you're talking about. I will contact Becker directly as it seems the CDR23 unit has some limitations (no stereo for bluetooth playback) so I may have to change my unit to a CDR220 and get the Becker adapter for optimal results.
Looks like the survey needs a "It's nice but I miss the storage too" option.
Bluetooth: I did the BTR kit. It uses the 6-CD changer input so you lose that but gain full stereo Bluetooth audio. Mine works just fine. There is also a hack around here somewhere to have the radio show "AUX" instead of "CD" when it is using that input. IIRC it just involved pushing the radio buttons in a certain sequence. Kind of cute. That said, there is a lot of needless stuff in the kit if you ask me; I eliminated about half of it. I wasn't looking for USB power ports and whatnot.
Any idea if the audio quality is better than a Bluetooth to FM adapter? I'm currently using one and it's....fine.....but a true Bluetooth connection is appealing.
An FM adapter adds two data conversions. BT digital -> FM analog at the sending end, FM analog -> digital signal at the other. It cannot help but be worse than a fully digital data transfer via Bluetooth.
I recently got my 996 and it has some kind of Bluetooth Functionality on the Aux selection, i was told it had a bluetooth adapter, sorry that this is becoming a BT post, i am wondering about the console delete also that's why i am here to see what people say... my car is a MY 2000 so it has no glove box, i am loathe to give up the small amount of storage the console provides, also if i decide to do the PCCM+ upgrade from Porsche which looks to be a decent upgrade then i will need the front Console to house the AC controls and the USB bit that comes with the unit to enable phone charging and direct connection to the unit.
The Bluetooth that is in mine currently i was told "it is by Ben from Germany"??? maybe i didn't hear or understand correctly as i cant find anything on line in the search i have done, anyway all i seem to have under aux is the capability to stream music from my phone, there is no hands free phone call ability as there is no Microphone that I am aware of, i can hear a person speaking to me but they can not hear me, so this may be obvious to all here but i thought it was worth mentioning.
I do miss the extra storage but not enough to go back.
Before I went with the Continental head unit I was using a $10.00 Bluetooth adapter that plugged into CD changer plug. Seemed to work fine.
Here are the instructions to enable the Aux function.
Did it w/ my 986; did it w/ my 996. Would do it again. Having decent knee room is WAY better than having a stupid plastic cubby or a CD/cassette organizer.
For the 996, I pulled my factory head unit and replaced it with a JVC media-less (i.e. no CD/dvd/cassette) head unit. No wiring changes were necessary, it has integrated bluetooth, and it cost me a whopping $80 from Crutchfield (including the wiring harness). Totally reversible if you decide to go back to stock.

I have the CDR23 and used this kit:

It is a FM transmitter - but it plugs in directly to the antenna port. I find the sound quality to be great.
I've had my 01 cab for 5 mos and I always thought the leg room was tight. Thanks for the tip. I did that bt adaptor but I got it off amzn for $20.

Thats because voting is for those who have installed a center console delete.
I didnt vote because the 996 interior looks better with the center console
How tall are you guys that liked the delete? Im 60 and have never felt cramped for leg room in my 996.
I have not done the delete and enjoy the cubby spot. It holds my sunglasses perfectly!
Yeah, that's the same for me. I'm 6'0, and don't find that it interferes at all with my motion, I don't come close to touching it with my leg, so I've not even considered the delete. I also like the storage in case I need to drop my phone or my glasses in there. I think it looks fine, too, it's a good divider between the two sides of the car, and currently I have a Rennline phone mount attached to it, so I find it useful that way, too. I didn't vote in the poll, either, as there's no suitable option, but I guess that's not what the poll is for. Looks like you get my 2c anyway,
.
I'm about 6'0 and never found the center console to be cramping me, however the first left turn I took after removing it showed how much I had been bracing against it. I think the pro for doing the removal is that its not possible from the 997 on, so it gives it some unique flair, however sacrificing the upper din cup holders to move the AC and other lack of storage is a sticking point.
I feel like i have too much to lose, on the one hand its cool to do something pretty unique aka console delete, and my knee feels the hardpoint of the console which is a tiny bit of discomfort, i have the:-
1. AC controls
2. Factory CD player
3. CD storage
4. The cubby
5. Model Year 2000 no glove box
I had considered going PCCM+ but am going to get the rennkit and retain the factory CD player, hence the need for storage for 4 CD's plus one in the chamber a total of 5 actual CD's WOW!!! being a bit of a vintage guy i have a vinyl collection and CD's also, as a side note, remember the USP of the CD was it will last forever!!! well i still have some of my original CD's i bought in 1982 and a few of them have got CD rot and wont play, yet my vinyl from the 70's still plays just fine scratches and all...ive tried to stuff that 12 inch single "Rappers Delight" into my CD but its a nogo so there you go progress...
Anyone want to buy some Laserdiscs ?? i really do have some haha i picked them up by accident in a vinyl stash i bought.
The End.
Well, I did it, and relocated the heated seat controls to the bezel. Really like the clean look. But I couldn't find the piece for the front of the console in Savannah Beige so I had to get a black one for now. More plans in the works.
@Sam-Son
The wiring for the seat heaters is pretty long and actually originates above the console, dropping down from the dash cavity. I had to untangle the wires a little but when I did, I had plenty of wiring to work with. I stuck a loop of the wiring up behind the bottom of the dashboard near the firewall (on the left side of the console) and reached in through the HVAC/stereo bezel to pull the wiring up into the dashboard cavity. The plugs got a little stuck but if you gently pull on the wiring while poking the plugs up from beneath the dash, they'll work their way up into the bezel cavity. You can then straighten out the wiring.
The plug wires are taped together with sticky cloth electrical tape. I cut away some of that tape so I could pull the plugs a little farther apart so they'd reach the seat switches I relocated to the bottom of the bezel. I provided a few notes on my build thread page,

. Hopefully that will help a little.
ColorBond LVP paint comes in Porsche Savanna Beige and is a perfect match, I've used it for several things in my car.

In all, no regrets. I'm glad I did it. Yes, the storage of the console is handy but the clean look makes the sacrifice worth it. I daily my 996 and for me the door pockets, center arm rest, glove box, and rear seats are more than adequate.
