They replaced the plastic fitting and the coolant tank, which started to show small stress cracks in the back.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
Yesterday I was driving leisurely on the interstate when a very nice young man warned me that I was loosing fluids.
At the same time my "coolant low" warning came up and I pulled over immediately and turned off the engine.
As I got out of the car, the smell of coolant was immediately obvious and it was literally gushing out the back.
I had AAA tow the car to my local Indy, which fortunately was only 5 miles away.
I suspect that losing this much coolant that quick points to a ruptured hose, but haven't looked at it. My Indy is scheduling 4 weeks out so it may be a while before they can diagnose.
I'm looking for opinions on likely causes and recommendations on what all to replace once they are in there.
Car is a 2002 C2, 117K miles.
According to the service records, the water pump, thermostat, and some related hoses were replaced as recent as 2019.
I cannot find any evidence that the coolant reservoir has ever been replaced.
Thanks in advance!
You're basically asking us to guess, so I'll play. Could be the reservoir or one of the coolant hoses. Some have plastic T junctions which crack over time.
Is there a prize for the correct guess?
when my water pump let go, it was a good flow
where in the back was it dripping?
center? drivers side?
depending on the location of the leak, could help determine what failed, but like mentioned above, won't know for certain until someone gets in there
The top of the engine seemed to be wettest on the driver's side. But is was 95 degrees on the side of a busy interstate so I didn't really get a closer look.
Tell you what, I'll do a drawing of a 10% discount code for one of my Retrofitlab kits
Odds are good the coolant reservoir is the culprit . Lots of heat cycles just breaks them down . If that's what it is go with a Porsche tank . For whatever reason most aftermarket/private label tanks fail quickly .
I am sure your mechanic will inspect all rubber hoses and plastic bits and give you their recommendation . All of us have to deal with aging parts , it's part of the charm 😋 . Let us know the final outcome .
Had the same experience in my 2004 C4S going to the airport some years ago and was the water pump. Lots of mess but straight forward fix. Also had to do the expansion tank some years after that but that was a slow leak with frequent slight coolant smell rather than the total hemorrhage that was the water pump failure. Glad you shut it down and have it at the Indy to fix up!
Are you sure it wasn't the coolant from your blinker fluid resevour? Replace your blinkers asap and report back.
You need to have back up Indy's and for this issue you really really don't need a Porsche specialist. Just a good mechanic you trust.
I know some people are not mechanically inclined, or a DIY type person, but I am amazed that a person would not even pop open the engine lid and look. I mean it is not that hard to look and say...hey there is a bunch of coolant coming out of that coolant hose. Could be as simple as the plastic coolant connector right next to the alternator. Porsche's are not mysterious and are a lot like other cars, in a manner of speaking.
Same thing happened to me. I saw a little steam coming out of the engine, I pulled over and saw a puddle of coolant under the car. Towed it to the indy and they replaced two plastic couplers that crack with age. After refilling the coolant and pressure testing they found a small leak in the coolant expansion tank and replaced that as well. All is fine now...however perform a close inspection of both your front and rear coolant pipes. The rubber hoses can corrode and begin to leak fluid. I did not have this issue but you need to look at that and be prepared to replace cross over coolant pipes in front and pipes in the rear as well. Rubber hose connections can become corroded over time and begin to leak coolant. Look on You Tube to see what I am talking about just type in "Porsche 996 Coolant Pipes" Good luck!
Update: Here is their findings. Relatively easy fix!
Technician discovered main coolant supply line from coolant reservoir has failed. There is a plastic joint with a T fitting on this hose, the T barb has snapped. This will cause coolant coming from tank to engine to leak out at a fast rate. Part needing replacement 99610685103.
I've bought that part but not yet installed. Is it ok to clamp off the hoses on either side and replace the T without draining the coolant and making a mess?
I just replaced that hose on my car yesterday
just siphon the tank contents into a gallon jug and save it for re-use (assuming it not already too old, then just replace with new coolant)
edit to the above post
there is a nice aluminum part that replaces the crappy plastic double ended nipple that is a common failure point
There are TWO plastic coolant parts and both can crack with age. Be sure to replace both. Here is the blurb from my repair shop.
1) Plastic connection pipe between coolant feed hose from reservoir to return hose (coolant coupler fitting)
2) Plastic coolant Union behind serpentine belt (coolant fitting plastic AOS hose m96/97)
You should absolutely replace with this part rather than the OEM piece. Shop around, but get this one;

Update: Car is back on the road. They replaced the plastic fitting and the coolant tank, which started to show small stress cracks in the back. They said it was also "bloated" and harder to remove. Here's a picture of the culprit:
I cannot, for the life of me, find part 47 on this diagram. Am I going crazy?
https://www.porscheatlantaperimeterp...oduct=10055076
. I'm trying to find the same part but for my 2001 3.4, which is same but different
From the shape of it it looks like it's the piece where the #22 hose clamp is indicated to go? Part number they re3placed on mine was 99610685103 so that is indeed #47 in the parts list...

Interestingly, the URO hose show the part that broke in metal. I also bought the URO part for the AOS connection that always breaks in metal as a URO part. I think $20. Put it on the car last week.
