The guys in advance were a lot better, for the little bit I ran with them.

Suggestion
I haven't been slacking (much) either with other projects that needed to get done: replace the engine in my VW that I blew up at Thompson Speedway last August; complete brake rebuild on my old Datsun 280Z; fix my buddy's old Accord; import 15 VW Corrado windshields from Europe; make motor mounts for a buddy's VR6 Turbo swap into a Datsun 240Z; lots of turmoil at work; I'll keep pushing anyway.

Suggestion
He has been very quick in what I think him and I are in agreement, was a car that was a wee bit piggy - with the changes he's made, I can really see that thing coming out swinging this year.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So a bunch of us hit the track thoughout the season and many would like to start hitting the track or even try it out once. I figured i would put together a thread for everyone to see what dates and where some 996s will be. I would also put out there u am happy to serve as a pitt/padock anchor for the group to gather and help with track side repairs if possible for those that r nervous and dont wrench.
So far my schedule is as followed.
3/25 njmp lightning with Mo-e.
I do have a season pass with these guys. They r a good group to drive with, u get 6 sessions and have good instructors. Very focused on driving and good track behavior or u r going home. if u want to try an event i can get a refferal credit so use my name in the registration form.....please
.
https://moehpde.com/home
4/4 njmp thunderbolt with Mo-E
not gonna post any more Mo-E dates but ill be at most of them. See their web site
4/16 Thompson Motor Speedway
5/13-15 Watkins Glen with Potomac pca
6/15-15 Watkins Glen with Metro pca (maybe)
7/29-31 Pitt Race with Aleghney pca
9/30-10/1 Njmp with Delaware pca
Im still trying to find a Summit Point Main date and possibly a Lime Rock event.
What to look for so dont be a stranger. Stop by and say hi.
This is a great idea.
Presently, like a lot of us my car is getting repairs and upgrades. This has been a bit of a problem with parts availability. I am waiting on backorder parts from Tarett, Porsche, Guard, Apex, and lots of others! I have a transmission being rebuilt that will be ready sometime between 4 and 24 weeks, depending on parts. That makes it hard to commit to dates.
So far I have only signed up with TNIA for Thompson Speedway on 4/19. I'd like to join DE Jeeper at Thompson on 4/16. This depends on having my car done, or at least usable.
I usually drive the black 996 Turbo car# 07 so come over if you see me there. I'm the tall gray haired guy with the Bruins hat.
Groups that I drive with:
SCDA is at scda1.com
Mass Tuning
Both are on motorsportreg.com for schedules.
Track Night In America is not on motorsportreg.com, you'd need to use their website tracknightinamerica.com. If you want to try out a track day for less than $150 they're highly recommended.
I'm with Aaron
@theprf
with regards to not being in a great spot to make firm commitments, This thread is a great idea though and I will certainly update when I get some clarity.
I'll be at Thompson on the 16th even if it's just to hang out. Really looking forward to getting back to Lime Rock, I have unfinished business there.
Aaron and me, come and say hi if any of the folks reading see us.
I really like Palmer, it's one of the most difficult tracks I know of. I would rather run my VW there. I may not run my VW on the track this year because of external influences such as not having a daily driver car otherwise... we'll see. I have run the 996 there with Mass Tuning last year and it was a good time.
I'm planning Lime Rock on either June 8th or 9th with TNIA and July 5th with SCDA. I'm also planning NHMS on August 4th with TNIA.
I'll be at all of the Riesentoter events:
https://www.rtr-pca.org/index.php/me...ation-schedule
Kinda need to be since I am the safety chair.
Usually at least 6 996s in the instructor groups, and at least 20 overall.
I am hoping to do three tracks this year.
Most likely Zone 1 PCA Watkins Glen
Hopefully June event at Lime Rock
I would like try a TNIA event at Pocono.
I drive to the track, so will be just doing Northeast
I added Mass Tuning on 4/16 to my calendar. So far its:
Thompson Speedway on 4/16 with Mass Tuning
Thompson Speedway 4/19 with TNIA
Thompson Speedway 5/5 with TNIA
Planned: 6/8 or 6/9 or both at Lime Rock Park with TNIA. Any other Lime Rockers let's coordinate this date.
The week after: 6/23 is a full day with SCDA at Lime Rock. That's a possibility too. Need to run mufflers though with 86dB sound limit. I can't find the schedule, the full day events are usually two 30-min sessions, a 25-min session, and a 20-min session.
Jack,the TNIA signups for June don't open until April 1st. I have not yet decided which day I will go. I don't think I can go to both because I can't get that much time off work.
Well, I have some bad news. Like Jason
@zbomb
I have to bail on the two April track days because my car isn't usable. I know, it's embarrassing after having done so much ra-ra-ra to get this going. It's just not going to happen. I am now shooting for 5/5 at Thompson to get on track for the first time this year.
I am going to go to the Mass Tuning event on Saturday to visit! I'll even have a 996! Just not this one.
I will have some great stuff when I finally get on track.
Track wheels, forged 18x12 and 18x10 lightweight wheels, NT01 in 245/40-18 and 305/35-18.
Don't have the wheels yet, scheduled May 1st.
GT2 front wheel carriers (steering knuckles, uprights) with all new supporting parts.
GT3 adjustable front swaybar with Tarett extended drop links.
997 Turbo 6-pot front brakes with slotted 997 Turbo 350mm rotors.
The rotors don't work with GT2 uprights, I am having special rotor spacers made to run them. ETA 4/20.
997 Turbo rear brakes with slotted 997 Turbo 350mm rotors to correct the excessive front brake bias.
997 GT2RS front fender liners and brake cooling ducts.
996 GT2 rear brake cooling ducts.
AWD delete, removed cardan shaft, front diff, and front driveshafts. These weigh 77.3 pounds altogether.
Moton motorsport 2-way remote reservoir dampers. These ought to be sweet!
And the pice de rsistance, manual transmission swap with a rebuilt 996 Turbo gearbox. A combo of 997 GT3RS and 996 CUP parts including a pumped trans cooler should make it durable, a Guard plate type LSD should make it work really well.
No ETA on this one, 5th gear is on galactic backorder
.
So I will be running the Tiptronic as RWD until I get this.
The supporting mods for the gearbox swap include a Numeric shifter and cables and a recoded ECU and manual trans instrument cluster.
I had to send my Tip ECU to get the coding correct on my manual ECU so I have NO ECU AT ALL right now. ETA 4/18.
Thanks to some help from Aaron
@De Jeeper
and a lot of ebay scrounging I have almost all the other parts for the swap - I only need the furthest aft blue clutch hydraulic line from a Mk2 996 (C2/C4/C4S/GT2/GT3) - anyone have an extra?
What's installed looks pretty nice, though.
Front suspension parts, the whole thing is equipped with monoballs/heim joints. I'm using Elephant LCA's up here and Tarett caliper studs.
Brakes installed, the 997 Turbo rotors are 0.076"/2mm further inboard than the proper rotors for these wheel carriers so I am having shims laser cut from 0.076 304 Stainless. The shims push the rotor disks 2mm outboard to align them with the calipers. It's also necessary to relocate the brake pipes from front to rear of the brackets.
The AWD hardware. It's lighter than it looks, 77.3 pounds. The GT2 front wheel carriers don't work with the AWD setup.
Rear brakes with the 997 Turbo calipers. These are 34mm x 2 pistons instead of 32mm and 30mm. More brake force reduces the excessive front brake bias. The dampers are the PSS9's because I haven't put the Motons on back here yet. I have an Eibach adjustable sway bar and GT3 LCA's with Tarret monoball inners, and Phenix Engineering monoball dogbones. I thinkthe wheel wells cleaned up pretty nicely for a car with almost 180k on the clock.
The gearbox on the way out to be rebuilt. I bought it as a "good used" unit. It's definitely used, not so much good as the only pieces that are reusable are the ring & pinion, LSD, and 4th and 6th gear sets.
No ! MA Aaron and I will be there telling you to go faster, don't worry.
Man - seeing MA Aaron's
@theprf
's writeup... I keep telling him, I am almost as excited for his car to be done as I am mine. He has been very quick in what I think him and I are in agreement, was a car that was a wee bit piggy - with the changes he's made, I can really see that thing coming out swinging this year. He has battled to get his car ready, little bit more and it will be there and I LOVE the build.
cool i got that email too. I signed up gor intermediate. I wonder how the field wil be? If it was like zbombs pass-n-fest last year maybe il move up after i learn the track. Off to watch some youtube laps.
yes thats typical with the mass tuning events.
i just want make sure the car is running well. Didnt do anything to the level of you and Aaron and Aaron but did have the engine out.
You guys coming to visit should bring helmets and give some in car coaching if you dare.
I'll bring my gear, coaching... not qualified but happy to ride along and tell any of you guys how great you're doing and how jealous I am.
The last time I was there with them... I bumped up to advance and proceeded to have my ABS fail on the next session, lock them up and slide into the grass across a miata's nose.
I did think there was a fair amount to be desired from the inter group, told the organizers and that facilitated my class change. The guys in advance were a lot better, for the little bit I ran with them.
Ill deff take the ride along. I already have 2 days at njmp this season so im pretty comfortable in the seat already. Looks like a high of 64*, gonna be a little chilly in the morn. Good for keeping the speeds down so i can learn.
Thank you guys! It's been a long and sometimes frustrating road.
I was planning to go to this event and the next one on 4/19 with the car as finished as I could get it, no matter what state it was in. Not having an ECU has put a bit of a damper on that, I can work around most other things but without an ECU that car's a big paperweight.
I'm hoping to shed ~200 pounds, it was 3686 pounds with me onboard before so about 3486 pounds with a 1/2 tank of gas. I'd LOVE to get it to 3200 without driver, with a 1/2 tank which may not be possible without more extensive work than I care to do. It did go pretty well for almost 2 tons.
Thanks Jack!
Didn't know this was possible, I will definitely bring my helmet. Jason or I can also make a lunch run if needed.
It looks like my track days of 2019 were my last. At least in the short term.
I am prepping my 996 for eventual sale early summer.
All of my lightly used autocross (2 days)/track(7 days) gear will be posted for sale in forums soon:
Left/Right Aluminum Track Mats (Rennline)
Folding Tow Hook (Rennline)
Magnetic Nose Guard (Rennline)
Roadhawk Camera with fully adjustable Roll Bar mount and auxiliary mic. (Roadhawk)
CG Lock (Seat belt lock)
Traqmate Shirt Fire Reatardant Shirt & Balaclava, Simpson Gloves. (used once)
Will be posted for sale in forums.
Nearly new Schwaben Track Bag with new Torque Wrenches (small & large) with socket & extension for lug nuts.
Supplies of new Wilwood Brake fluid and various track needs, may also be part of the above package.
Dassport Roll Bar (serial number registered to my chassis), Brey-Krause Fire Extinguisher mount and Chrome fire extinguisher will stay with car.
Unless new buyer negotiates the purchase without. (Color matched, so I wouldn't think so)
You folks have all been so helpful for nearly 8 years, the best bunch of Porsche folks from any forum or group.
Still might see you at a Porsche event yet, keeping my Cayenne.
I had an amazing time at the track and wasn't even driving.
@yaz996
(Thanks to Adam for bringing me a special gift you all will see later.)
@theprf
And me out there supporting the guys shredding it up.
And:
@Jnelso
@hbdunn
@De Jeeper
(Thanks Aaron for bringing me multiple special gifts.)
Absolutely slaying it on track - I can say this definitively as I got to ride along with each of them. To get the opportunity to ride in 3 well sorted 996's all being driven by guys who know what they were doing was awesome, without my car being down, the opportunity would not likely occurred... so a silver lining there. I'm biased, but if you can get to hang out with any of the guys above - take the opportunity, you will have a fun day with fun guys playing with fun cars.
@Jnelso
@hbdunn

@De Jeeper
had a short session when I was taking pictures and I didn't get any of him on track, So... 1st one is him and me when I was lucky enough to get a ride along, 2nd one is my face from the drivers seat immediately after he let me take it for a quick spin outside the track... YES - you read that right, I drove it. It's better than you think, and I don't care how good you think it is, it's better. Driving it, you would NEVER think it didn't leave the factory that way - he did an amazing job and that's underselling it.
Jason, it was great that you and Aaron (theprof) came to Thompson to support us even though both your cars are not quite ready for the track. Can’t wait till we can do it again with everyone’s car ready to go. And maybe we can get some more 996’s to join us.
This was a great day. Thanks to Jack, Brad, and Aaron for letting me ride along. I loaned Adam
@yaz996
my helmet and sent him out for a session with Aaron
@De Jeeper
. Perhaps we'll have some guys back for 5/5 at the same place. I should have my car together by then. I hope.
Yea it was a pretty good time . We might even get Adam to try his car in the track??? I also got a cool r&d gift from him. I have to fix a spring clip issue on my dash before i can fully test it but u think his phone mount should be strong enough to support an Aim.
Also happy to share the gt3ish experience to anyone that shows up at an event.
Here is my best session. Got ijnto the 1.30s in my first day there so im pretty happy with that.
You Tube
Probably a good thing we were using an intercom and you can't hear much on that vid. Seems that sending two Aaron's out in the same car leads to a lot of swearing.
Great to so see you guys, wish everyone's cars were working. Will do it again soon.
Posted in the other thread, trying to scare Jason best I could.
You Tube
A cool perspective to ride with each of you guys. 3 different cars with 3 different styles ALL very safe, aware and competently driven.
The Bilstein / HR combo is damn potent, was surprised how well they handled, very little roll, pretty composed over bumps, I was impressed. For a conventional shock / spring, really good.
Riding front seat ended up being a lot of fun, very appreciative for the experience.
I couldn't remember if anyone else is going to Palmer this weekend? I signed up for Saturday, may stay for Sunday too. Saturday is CW which I've never done.
Brad
Seeet ill be on the fence line camping in the pete. As always u r welcome to make it your hkme base for your track gear. I should get there tues evening.
Yes, be there Thursday. Jack
@Jnelso
is also going. I'm not overly happy about the weather... a long drive on NT01's in the rain isn't really something I enjoy.
Yes, I will be at Limerock tomorrow probably in the paddock around 12:00 to 12:30. I am not happy about the weather either my Yokohamas are down to very limited tread depth so according to the weather report I will have about 3 1/2 hour ride in the rain tomorrow morning. See you all there.
Since I do this for fun, not points or status, I am going to decide this afternoon if I want to go at all. I'm not keen on spending another $250 on gas & consumables and drive 6 hours to play in heavy rain. Of course if I forfeit the track day it will be perfect weather.
I would love to over the winter but thats still way too far away. Ill have to see finacially also, with $6 gal for deisel its over 2k in fuel for the toter. If i could find someone else to fo i could split it?
Yeah I totally get you and that does add a ton to the whole trip. Because I'm getting extended, I believe I can make Sebring in Feb. Just can't remember if it's a local club or a PCA event.
June 9th at Lime Rock Park. I talked with Brad
@hbdunn
about how to get into a good PCA event with an instructor who knows how to drive a 911. I could use the help, I have increased the potential of this car so much that I am not comfortable searching for the limits.
Next date for me is June 30th, Thompson Speedway. I hear that Jason
@zbomb
is targeting this date for the first run with the newly revised car.
Man now your gonna make me do it. Im 99% sure if i go i can only do monday, maybe i can do a half day tues. Wife is gonna kill me but probably worth it.
Im not gonna be able to make the trip. I may try autocross for the first time in sunday. I have a friend thats been bugging me all summer to join him and the event is only 20 min from my house so ill probably give it a try.
