Fuel gauge was exactly at half a tank when I replaced the pump.

I wouldnt preemptively replace the fuel pump unless you are having issues with it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have done some reading on the forums and looks like a battery disconnect solved the issue on some and someone mentioned needing a piwis tool and completely draining the tank and recalibrating.
Hey Guys- need some help.
Recently replaced my fuel pump on my 99 996 C2. Fuel gauge was exactly at half a tank when I replaced the pump. Got it replaced have been driving around a bit then went to fill up. When I filled up my fuel gauge is only reading half a tank now (its full). Pretty positive I put the sender back in correctly and its not hung up on anything. Is there some sort of special reset I need to do in order for the gauge to read correctly? Disconnected the negative terminal on the battery for about 30 mins and then reconnected and that didn't fix it. Hoping this is a easy fix and I dont have to have some special software to reset that only the dealer can do. Have done some reading on the forums and looks like a battery disconnect solved the issue on some and someone mentioned needing a piwis tool and completely draining the tank and recalibrating. Any help is greatly appreciated!
alright Im dumb and this was user error. Took everything back apart and the fuel pump hoses were crossed against the sender not allowing the float to move all the way up. Readjusted the hoses and that fixed the issue.
for anyone wondering there is not a fuel gauge/ sender/ float reset needed for a 99 996. Just make sure your hoses dont interfere with the sender float.
Somewhat a tangent, but related: did you replace the pump after it failed or preemptively?
I have a 99 and assume it has the original pump. Thinking of going in and replacing just so it doesn't leave me on the side of the highway.
how many miles did yours last?
i have 141k on mine. Replaced it because I have a hot start issue and thought the fuel pump was the root of the issue. It ended up not being the issue. I wouldnt preemptively replace the fuel pump unless you are having issues with it. Highly doubt it would quit on you without warning. Took out the original and its in good shape for 23 years old and 141k. Also, Im not very mechanically inclined and I was able to replace it in under 2 hours DIY. I could do it again in under a hour now that I know whats going on. Dont take it to a shop and let them try and charge a thousand plus for a new one plus labor if you do end up changing yours out.
very easy to fix. Might take you an hour from start to finish. Id take the sender completely out and get a good look at how it works. The 2 hose lines below are what the float is getting caught on. Youll just need to ziptip them together and flex them more to the left when you put everything back in. Also a good tip put some soap around the rubber gasket when putting the sender back in. Make things ALOT easier to put the lock ring back on.
